- exsst, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45Yeah agreed.
I think that's the issue when people say "we don't need these silly effects etc" well actually, once we have the possibility, developers, designers and innovators we will most definitely use these for useful notifications/tasks.
This is just one small example.. Expect many more.. - atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35That's a great idea, It's not a annoying pop-up that blocks something on your screen it's a very cool and effective way to get a notice from a program. Who said that there's no inovation in free software world?
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33All the people who don't like eye candy should stop commenting about how they don't care about eye candy in beryl diggs.
Its like me going into a digg about dogs and commenting on the fact that i think dogs are useless. - longboarder543, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32That's definitely the most useful use of the water ripple effect I've seen. It's not just pointless eye candy. I find myself missing incoming IM's regularly when I'm engrossed in what I'm doing and it's just blinking or whatever in the taskbar.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Agreed. I *****' hate dogs.
- longboarder543, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15No one but yourself has mentioned anything about this only running on Linux. Feeling a little insecure about your OS perhaps?
- SadPanda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I would want to ripple to terminate sooner on the screen, it seems to be a little too big for a pop-up notification.
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Cool now how can I do this in OS X? Seriously.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I wrote this in the comment section in the video as well:
"That's one of the few Beryl/XGL effects that actually seems useful and non-intrusive. Very cool." - StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14To be fair, this is much more useful than OS X's dashboard eye candy.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -13/+22Very cool, it reminds me of the ripple effect when you drop a widget onto your dashboard in OS X.
- jesperht, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11You need to specify a target pixel location for the "ping".
Try "waterping.sh 0 0" for instance. - twowords, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This is a very intelligent comment. I'll digg you up. :D
- FloHimself, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8oh, sorry. it should be:
#!/bin/bash
dbus-send --type=method_call --dest=org.freedesktop.compiz /org/freedesktop/compiz/water/allscreens/point org.freedesktop.compiz.activate string:'root' int32:`xwininfo -root | grep id: | awk '{ print $4 }'` string:'amplitude' double:1 string:'x' int32:$1 string:'y' int32:$2 - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You'd have to adjust the ripple radius for different types of notifications... IMs could maybe get a little wavelet that goes out a couple inches. Maybe incoming emails emails could go out further. You know you gotta pay attention when you've got a tsunami crashing through your screen, though... (maybe for IMs or emails from certain people or something) : P
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Exactly, I didn't install Beryl yet because I find "eyecandy" useless -- this convinced me to install it.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Part of the point is that it ISN'T being done by any other OS. It's a tweak that's totally unique to Beryl in particular and 3D Linux desktops in particular.
At some point this WILL be copied by the MS Universe and everyone will think it's cool as hell.
I expect to see more of this kind of innovation from the nixies. They will, after all, have more experience with the 3D desktop than Microsoft. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Anybody else read this as Chernobyl notification effect for Linux?
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Why people digg down questions? Answer yes or no but don't digg it down. I frankly don't know the answer and I wished to see an answer.
- pauljaroszewski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7dooood! so friggin cool. i can almost get chicks with that...almost.
- Heiios, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I want! Very cool, It'd be nice if it didnt traverse the whole screen but maybe a 3" by 3" square.
- jessecurry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'd love is someone could come up with an OS X version, this is actually a useful bit of UI.
- drowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg is social bookmarking. People can digg things so they remember them later.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13They perfected that years ago on Windows, it's otherwise known as the BSOD effect.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I imagine you could configure it.
- groovepapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree, this is much more useful. I always liked to ripple effect, but thought it was basically just eye-candy. I think this shows that its important for people to pursue "just eye-candy." Once we know cool effects are possible, we'll figure out a way to make them practical, too.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This effect actually came from something similar in Beryl. You can start a "rainstorm" which is really just a fancy screen saver. This is actually useful instead of being distracting. Kudos to the developer(s)! (Kudos are fricken good, mmmm)
- icefox2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Very cool video
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Agreed. This is way better than bouncing the Dock icon, which is annoying as hell. Growl is cool, but this is more discreet, yet performs well in getting your attention.
- BingeBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This makes me want to run linux on my mac!
- jesperht, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@zach382
It just takes a while for them to update. Its at over 14,000. - jesperht, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i just had a pretty long sleep() in there -- its easy to change :)
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4still much better than pop-up messages "you've got mail"
- mccord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ah found the event settings in kopete:
settings->configure notifications, there you can choose to launch programs/scripts for events :)
thanks for the script! - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There's a difference between commenting on the functionality being displayed, and on the implementation of the function. Saying something is eye-candy typically means that it's not implemented in a way that's beneficial to productivity. That doesn't mean that the technical functionality is useless, or that we are unimpressed with the capabilities.
This particular notification thing is not eye candy at all. That is a great way to draw attention to a part of the screen. Other things like the cube desktop and wobbly windows, not so useful, and getting dangerously close to eye candy... - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, I just sent Apple some feedback at http://www.apple.com/feedback requesting that feature, both as a default notification instead of bouncing the dock icon, and as a framework to developers, to build notifications with ripples into their apps. I'd suggest doing the same. Maybe if enough people ask, they'll do it...
- 022A, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Other things like the cube desktop and wobbly windows, not so useful, and getting dangerously close to eye candy..."
I disagree, in part. I enabled XGL on my desktop at work on a whim and I've kept it around.
I can honestly say that the desktop cube provides a real benefit to me.
Having a simulated spatial relationship between different desktops does wonders for keeping my work organized.
Previously, when I tried take advantage of multiple desktops I just ended up dumping everything onto one anyway. Then I'd close out various windows that would have liked to keep open in order to rid of the feeling of a cluttered stack.
With the cube, everything *feels* seperate. That momentary "spin" keeps everything seperated in my mind and I find myself multitasking better. - smeager, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@jesperht
Have you show the guys over at beryl-project.org about this. I'm pretty sure they will find it very functional and will develop a beryl plug in from it. Or maybe you can develop one. - michaelkirk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And some people say that XGL is pretty, but not functional. HA!! Take that! Something beautiful AND functional AT THE SAME TIME. As soon as I can get Beryl working on my rig I will definitely be using this. I can't afford a Mac and don't want to shell-out for Vista either.... soooo Ubuntu it is :)
- sark666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I get this as well. I suspect it's something with the formatting.
Simply copying pasting it, has some weird formatting with spaces were they shouldn't be.
Can someone post a working version here - dcherryholmes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I tried running this on Gnome, since I couldn't see anything in the code that looked KDE-specific. I get this output from dbus when I try to run waterping.sh from the terminal:
dmc@valar:~$ waterping.sh
Applications can not close shared connections. Please fix this in your app. Ignoring close request and continuing.
Anybody have any ideas? I searched on the error output, and it was a closed bug report. - groggyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually, archiesteel, if i may interject here:
beryl is not compiz. it is a fork of compiz. compiz still exists and can be installed seperately. - reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is this the kind of thing going into kde4? I know that kwin is supposed to get compositing support, but does that mean effects like this by default on kde, without having to install beryl?
- michaelg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1022A: I must say that I am in the same boat myself. I actually just wanted to see some interesting eye candy because I've always found OS X's slight effects very nice and polished and was wanting to see how this would stack up. I too love the cube as it is much simpler than having the four buttons on the bottom and having to click between without knowing which is which, so I would typically avoid using them. Now, I can simply move my mouse to the side of the screen and scroll between the faces.
- t3st3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, looks interesting, maybe will give it a try
- watje, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've got this error:
watje@dionyxus:~$ ./waterping.sh 0 0
Must use org.mydomain.Interface.Method notation, no dot in "llscreens/point"
Does someone know how to fix this? - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To the original question of "Applications can not close shared connections. Please fix this in your app. Ignoring close request and continuing."...
http://forum.beryl-project.org/post-49122 - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, that's a good point. I often digg videos at work so that I remember to watch them at home after work...
- zach382, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2haha, this is great, there's 504 diggs and only 324 actual video views on youtube. know doesnt that tell you something.
- xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woah here she comes, watch out boy she'll chew you up. Woah here she comes, she's MAC eater.
