- standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Wait, I thought you said this was a Beryl demo...
I couldn't hear the poorly mixed metal music in the background -- plus I never saw you spin your desktop cube around even once.
What gives? - linnerd40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Ok, sorry for comment abuse. But PLEASE, do not start a fanboy war within the comments of my blog. If you don't have anything constructive to say, or at least something nice, please don't say it. The point of this post was to show people a cool new feature of Beryl... why must we turn it into a war of Windows vs. Linux?
- Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Seems more usable than Vista's Flip3D. Gives you a better preview of the previous/next window.
- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25hmm...eye candy is one thing, but usability is another.
I don't think the question should be whether desktop effects or next-gen desktop environments (like plasma or topaz) are more important to the future of linux. The question should be whether or not the next-gen DE will properly integrate the 3D desktop as part of the "native" environment rather than just an add on. - Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Spam is spam. Go away.
- justnick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11that is a new level of ignorance. You do know this is for Linux running Beryl don't you?
Don't comment about something you don't have a clue about. - mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Beryl does have an Expose-like feature that's just as good or better than Expose. http://www.beryl-project.org/features.php
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9On my system.
Beryl: 2.1 MB
Emerald (window decorator): 3.3 MB
Total: 5.4 MB memory taken. - linnerd40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7it doesn't lag... that was just an odd problem with the video encoding. Sorry about that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It's for LINUX, mongoloid!
- Stemp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8There is already an exposé-like in beryl. This is just another way to show it. it's a question of choices.
I forgot you just don't have the choice ;) - kingwalterii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i have a truly transparent terminal...urxvt is what i use, with beryl
- jasmin888, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Perhaps they are - but not sure - just remember
*** DON'T TOUCH ATI CARDS ***
until their drivers support this stuff.
The most important for the spread of linux is
1) preinstalled well functioning linux
Will target 85% of the users (they wouldn't know one os from the other and couldn't care less)
The vast majority or users never selected one os over another - they bought a computer
Most users don't know the difference between the computer and the 'harddisk'.
Large number of users use word's 'open' dialog for all their file handling
Eye candy will attract a few. This is significant at the moment when the linux community is so small - later this won't matter one way or the other. - chrislee149, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, as an OS X user, I can only wish that the Command+Tab window switcher was like this. I hardly ever use Exposé - it is simply too extravagant for a simple task, and I don't find it as functional as a simple Command+Tab. This ring view would be a very nice replacement, though. I think a lot of Beryl features are better than OS X equivalents, and it's unfortunate that we lack them.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6And you also dont get the horrible jagged lines on the angled vista windows.
- linnerd40, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6lol, on Digg again :D
This is a cool new feature, which I am really enjoying. It is quite usable too :D
Enjoy! - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Beryl has some very poor choices for default settings. For one, they slow down many of the animations so you can see them better, but it's very bad for usability.
Once you set the animations more appropriately (fades instead of weird window effects, set them to their max speed, etc) it's all way better. I get no lag on my i915 video card with 8 MB of RAM. - mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ooh, cool, that's much nicer than the standard alt+tab window switcher. It might actually make me start using the keyboard to switch windows.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4lol. OSX uses a ton more ram than linux does. Dont kid yourself there, OSX is the most ram hungry OS, although vista is giving it a run for its money.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha, that's amazing! That's about what I'm getting too.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Actually, as an OS X user, I can only wish that the Command+Tab window switcher was like this. What's unfortunate is that OS X lacks a way to plug in new features like this. Beryl and Compiz themselves implement all the cool features using plugins. I think OS X would have a ton of great plugins if it were possible to do so. It'd probably blow Beryl out of the water. - bettermentflux, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Nothing Earth shattering, but yet another nice little usability tweak from the Beryl project.
I'm starting to think that Beryl, Compiz, Looking Glass, et al, are more important to the future direction of the Linux desktop than KDE's Plasma and Gnome Topaz. - crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's sounds like a hardware issue to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How old are you?
"Did you find something interesting on digg talk about it here."
That's the forum description for "Interesting digg stories". - jasmin888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How is it turned on - and how do you use it?
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes there is stable NTFS r/w support. Just try Ubuntu, it's got the most userfriendly ways to set things up, and the forums are a wealth of information.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"just try to install MacOSX and get it over with..."
Installing Linux on a PC is WAY easier and faster than even trying to get OSx86 running on it..... just so you know. Will save a lot of time. Plus it's illegal to install OSX on non-Apple hardware. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's more of a technicality, playing off the DMCA. You can't install it on non-apple hardware without cracking it, but in cracking it, you violate the DMCA. Even though you own the software, you're not allowed to make a slight modification to allow you to use it on a different computer. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the way it works.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is this the same thing as "Deskloops?" Because I tried that and hated it.
Honestly, I'd like to see the Beryl guys focusing more on usability, and not just eye candy. - Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, dude mind tellin me how you got beryl working on your radeon? I have been trying to get cool effects on my Mobility Radeon 9000 since the days of Luminocity
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gnome-Terminal has had true transparency since last year..!
- archiesteel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Honestly, I'd like to see the Beryl guys focusing more on usability, and not just eye candy."
This is usability. Usability and Eye Candy are not incompatible. Look at Exposé (or the Beryl version, Scale). - ungamedplayer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What is funny ?, oh... you wanted to discredit these people for their work. Its either that or you wanted to get into an internet fight.
En garde !
"Your mums face lags" lol..
Or
"YOUR FACE IS JUST SHAPES"!
Feel better now ?
Digg me and him/her down. - eleazar123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I tried Ubuntu a month ago, and grub gave me serious problems, took my linux friends many hours to fix it. Apparently grub doesn't like my hardware setup, because every time I try to install it, grub messes up and i have to manually install it and then guess which hdd Ubuntu is really on :- (and i have 6hdd's so it takes a while)
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Eleazar I am assuming you have a raid setup. If you go to the Ubuntu Forums, and post in the absolute beginner forum they are very friendly and helpful. Just ask when you get into trouble.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2After actually R'ingTFA (:P), I think it looks pretty useful. It makes more sense than Vista's window switcher in a way, because you can see more windows at the same time.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes and no. In Ubuntu you have to install a driver called Ntfs-3g, it isn't native unless they changed that in Edgy Eft. Also last time I checked their isn't support NTFS read/write support for 64bit Ubuntu, just 32bit.
- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The question should be whether or not the next-gen DE will properly integrate the 3D desktop as part of the "native" environment rather than just an add on." Exactly. The future *nix desktop is not about a bunch of add-ons, but a unified 3D desktop environment. What's use full about projects such as Beryl may find their way into KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc.
Now, I'm sure they'll always be add-ons like this, and the "regular" desktops will be more modest (as they actually should be, some of the eyecandy isn't useful and may detract from the usability for average users) - bml104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually think it is great usability. Nice work guys!!!
- TeqnoHaxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh look, it's Expose that swings.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On Trevino's repository (check the packages forum on http://forum.beryl-project.org/ for more info) there is a modified version of Konsole that supports true transparency. Personally, I think typing on a semi-transparent window is terrible. It works ok with fake transparency because you can match the font to look good against your wallpaper, but with true transparency you never know what background you may be typing on. You end up needing to keep the window 90% opaque anyway.
- willistg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Super key + Tab key etc.... just look in the key bindings (and change them if you wish) in the beryl settings manager.
It's neat when it works but I think it's crashing silently on me. So I just went ahead and disabled it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, and it also hasn't been in development for 5+ years.
- sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm excited to see what the new 3d desktop environment enhancements to do on Linux. I'm generally a MacOSX user, but I just bought a new pc for limited windows use (damn Half Life 2 addiction), and will be installing Linux and a variety of enhancements when I get the chance.
I'm wondering if I should even bother putting the multiple hours into all that, or just try to install MacOSX and get it over with... - stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Welcome to my blocklist.
- Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it really illegal? How is that possible? Wouldn't some law get in the way of letting them do that? It is like a monopoly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ntfs-3g is perfectly usable and runs fine on 64bit. There was some problems (speed issues not data loss afaik) with transferring multiple large files at once but thats fixed now.
It is a user space file system so you you probably can't boot of it (and if you could you would have compatibility problems for things like permissions and links, also ntfs is fairly crap anyway being subject to fragmentation etc), and you do need to set it up in you fstab instead of normal ntfs. But for accessing your windows documents it works great.
"The driver currently is in BETA status, which means that no data corruption or loss has been reported during ordinary driver use, nor found in our extensive quality testing before release of the latest version, however we are aware of certain usability issues and driver limitations which are all documented and planned to be resolved in the future. It may be revealing about the high reliability of the NTFS-3G driver that an increasing number of users find hidden hardware faults, and several Microsoft released NTFS bugs during NTFS-3G testing and usage."
http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ - Isolder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Using gnome's terminal in KDE has given me true transparency. With Beryl's ability to blur the background under the transparency it's even better.
- galegria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Beryl, Beryl, Beryl. This guys are releasing features after features. When they reach 1.0 we will have a very weird desktop. At least I will.
- jtizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just wanted to chime in and agree with plamoni... I have beryl + aiglx on my mobility radeon 9000 (Dell Inspiron 8200) with the open source radeon driver. Runs better than I would have expected, and I DO expect a lot from this old laptop.
