Picasa, which was acquired, was not written with Qt, unlike Google Earth for example. In the process of making Picasa available for Linux, Google submitted _a lot_ of patches to the Wine projects, so it should help compatibility with other apps. - prammy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19How about you read http://code.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=60266&topic=10726 ?
Google does support many F/OSS projects through its summer of code program. Another great side effect is that it helps students as well. They also help the wine project.
Having said that I would prefer a native version but I guess with people like you its damned if they do, damned if they don't. - baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22i can understand your sentimate, hopefully Google will become more of a player in helping out the Linux community and actually help in developing native Linux applications...
- BenBenMan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19.... other ... search engines?
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16@lukyjay
Google already rolls their own flavor of Linux... it's nicked "Goobuntu". The internal users at Google seem to like it. - prammy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17@spr0ket:
I can confirm that. My uncle works at Google and from what I have heard the current version is based on Feisty :) - dootzky, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17i think google messing with linux is a good thing, if nothing else - GNU/Linux is getting more on popularity ;)
- McAmp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I'm hoping for Google Talk for linux with new Talk features.
- Giga, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@elvisshock
They had to write patches for WINE to make it work, and then submitted the patches upstream. Arguably, this actually contributes in a larger way overall than having their own singular app run natively.
EDIT: schestowitz beat me to it below... suprisingly no ASCII quotes though? - drgmdp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8no *****..!
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7That would be foolish to do such a thing. If they released Goobuntu, they would then have to worry about support. Support is one thing that sucks most any company dry of funds. If Google wants to play it right, they will send their changes up stream to the respective owners of the packages. Then it's fair game for anyone in the Linux world and Google is made to look like a god for supporting Linux.
- wedderburn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Googles got the right idea, don't make the apps for Linux you'll always piss off someone(gnome verse kde etc) but open up the api/protocols (picasa web n more) or use existing ones (jabber/gtalk) and let the Linux community make the apps it wants. oh and they pay users to work on projects that the community wants ( summer of code).
- bsharitt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I'd rather see them submit patches to get Pidgin working with voice, that way it can hopefully make its way to Adium. Didn't they hire a prominent Pidgin developer a while back?
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Google Linux software would be a good, I believe.
- mooninite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They did hire a Pidgin guy. Pidgin seemed to get better after he left, too. However, file transfers still don't work well in most cases.

( I live in Arkansas, so I can get away with this. ) - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4w00t native apps, about damn time, though I always wondered why google whom used GNI/linux as there internal operating system did not release native apps for linux. Lets hope they don't go and do some dumb like us OSS instead of ALSA, so then we have to wait another 5 yrs to get an alsa version or version that lack features compared to the windows and os x counterparts.
- deshbandhu, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10Google is way ahead of all other search engines.
- digomatica, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3although i love mac osx, for the sake of my beloved old pc i really hope that Google can develop some nice apps for linux
or better yet a complete google linux package gubuntu or glinux
http://wetech.blogspot.com/2007/06/gubuntu-google-and-linux.html - NTolerance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'd like to see Google Sidebar on Linux. GNOME currently lacks a sidebar-type program.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Did you even RTFA? They say that there's a Google Linux team to port this google's applications to linux natively.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Those both worked fine on my 754 Athlon 64 and AM2 Athlon 64 X2. The problem isn't your CPU unless it's faulty.
- Garfunkel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2They will release google desktop, surely, then google talk and maybe they will introduce some new app? hmm...there are so many fields they could exploit to expand.
Very good move. - Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@cantormath
Picasa does not run natively. It's a wrapper class around a WINE executable. Taken right off the Google page: "As you may know, Picasa is now available for Linux users. Picasa for Linux runs the current Windows version of Picasa on the open-source Windows application-programming interface (API), Wine."

When did Google divulge it's users personal information? - thecarpenter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1All I want is Sketchup for Linux. Please and Thanks.
- cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Picasa does run natively. Google Rocks and will rock more as time goes on. Google Support for linux is not the best it could be, yet, but it is better then most and is getting better all the time. We need google to do more......and no hard feelings either way........they have done so much already.
- Ratatosk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I really hope for Google Desktop, would be great stuff!
- 16777216, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1GkrellM?
- yoranyo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Google desktop search for Linux is a good thing. What I don't understand is how a company like google can not make their google toolbar's bookmark for 64 bit work. That's right toolbar's bookmarks do not work with 64 bit. Guess what, I just tried downloading the desktop search, when I clicked the .dep file, it said ........ "Error: Wrong architecture. i 386".
The Desktop search doesn't work with 64 bit. Anyways I still welcome the desktop search on Linux from google. Hopefully they will eventually release the 64 bit version. Google knows world is moving towards 64 bit ...... - Breepee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Please, let it be Picasa 2.7, let it be! Been waiting for that a looooong time now.
- DirkRGently, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Google this, Google that. Lets not forget that google recently has been divulging personal information. Google on Linux - I can do without.
- TimDigg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1whoa now kids...
There are search engines based on better technology than Google. - smacksaw, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Google Earth and Picasa crash hard on my AMD64 comp, but not my 32-bit Intels...I'd be happy if they fixed those before tackling other projects.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1I hope and pray that Google releases a iLife rival for Linux
- corevette, on 10/11/2007, -10/+6Google Talk or Google Desktop for Linux?
- jobless, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Now the Ubuntu Dell laptops can have bloatware too .. :P
- LukyJay, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Recon if google made a distro it would suck?
- martinoconnor, on 10/11/2007, -9/+0I predict that Google will release Goobuntu - a google branded release based on Ubuntu
- pairanoyd, on 10/11/2007, -17/+2***** google and all their crap. Google = EVIL.
If you use anything that google produces and especially if you install anything from google on your computer you are a fool..
I would rather sandpaper a bobcat's ass in a phone booth than use anything from google. - Reziarfg, on 10/11/2007, -19/+1Doesn't matter, just use the windows apps since Linux needs windows to run! Bwaha! :P
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linux_Needs_Windows_To_Run - swiecki, on 10/11/2007, -35/+1How can google make linux products?
if it doesn't even know linux exists?
Take evasive action....
ITS A TRAP!!@!!!!1111
THERES TOO MANY GOOGLE PRODUCTS!!!! - elvisshock, on 10/11/2007, -53/+8thats *****... picasa runs on wine. it doesn't even run natively. Is this the "SIGNIFICANT" contribution they are talking about?
Keep your crap to yourself google.
