- zborgerd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+72What's wrong with paying for quality software?
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40"Sucks that you have to pay for it,"
And you wonder why publishers have no interest in creating games for the Linux crowd. - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Demos aren't because you don't want to pay. They're because you want to see what you're buying *before* you pay.
I will be purchasing this game if for no other reason than to show some support for the publisher. - micks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22There is a demo available from the LGP website, which the article links to.

I just started and it's coming down at 130 and climbing - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20... Linux runs You!
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Beware! That fix can open you up to spyware, viruses, trojans, worms, and crackers if not meticulously cared for from day 1.
A more savory fix can be found here: http://nvidia.com - Jonty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20It's kinda odd seeing Linux system requirements printed in the style you get on the back of software boxes.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16There are a lot of very talented developers out there who don't have the time to work for free. I'd hate to miss out on all their work.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18@foolfromhell: So, Your saying we should stop pressuring game companies to release Linux/Mac ports and just shut up and use Windows? Fsck that!

You can always play FrozenBubble for free. - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16It's refreshing seeing game requirements that haven't skyrocketed into or past the Doom3 range.
- Kreuzader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12StarForce is not used in the Linux version - and it wasn't the developer's choice to use StarForce, it was the publisher of the Windows version (Dreamcatcher) who mandated that. Dreamcatcher is not involved with the Linux version.
- Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Where is the demo? Can't find it...
I don't mind paying for it, it's just that I have little to no money. - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Just to clarify, "If it's good I'd happily pay for it" does not mean I'm gonna BT it, it means I won't have it.
- Kreuzader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11There's a review of this up @ PC Burn (Linux version):

And here's a review of the original PC/Xbox version:

It's good to see new games in linux :) - thechitowncubs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9http://demofiles.linuxgamepublishing.com/coldwar/

"I think you guys should chill about my comment, I am 16 and have no money, how do you expect me to pay for stuff."
Maybe you should go out and get a job like most other 16 year olds. I'm 17 and I have a job and almost every junior and senior I know has a job. Quit being lazy and go find one. - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I think you guys should chill about my comment, I am 16 and have no money, how do you expect me to pay for stuff.
If it's good I'd happily pay for it. - bwoodall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide
works like a charm for ATI cards...if your using Ubuntu that is... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah, but I'd bet even using the best ATI card it would still look like *****. Damn you Fglrx... DAMN YOU!!!!
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7ARRGGG! Now I dont know what to do....
Starforce messed up one of my gaming boxes so i swore to myself I wouldnt ever buy a game from a company that supported them!
OTOH, I have been itching for developers to release their games on Linux and I told myself that as long as the game is somewhat enjoyable and playable I would buy it. Even if it just sits on the shelf I want to make the impact on the gaming industry that "yes there are Linux Gamers!"
Can anyone confirm if this company still uses starforce as their protection? I will go google it. I will post back anything I find... - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Good thing I got NVidia cards because of ATi's historically abysmal Linux support...
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Going to start? I think they've been infighting since Linux kernel 0.9 :P
- compuguy1088, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The game has that sort of cold war U.S. superiority corny like feeling, but it sort of sets the atmosphere of hte game, making it slighty campy, as well as stealthy, and deadly. It was a decent game, though the cut scenes were also reminicent of FMV's from CnC, which is ok, from the fact that it fits in with the game. My only curiosity was that the orignal game had starforce copy protection, *shudders*, and if you didn't update starforce, the game would cause a BSOD. Because this is in linux, I'm guessing there isn't going to be starforce in it...which is good.
- NoodleGuy, on 10/12/2007, -16/+21Too bad I have to pay for food. Call me stingy, cheap, or whatever, but these days the less money you can spend on your eating habit, the better....
- Black913Hole, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Now if only I could get hardware acceleration to work on my ATI video card ...
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Perhaps that is why they made a version for linux, too squeze out some extra money on a game people will buy, primarily for supporting linux releases and not for its quality.
- JustMatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5jzimmerman, you just made my day. FrozenBubble ftw.
- minuteZERO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+564mb vid requirements? holy crap! i could probably find something like that in the back alley! now that's coding people.
- edburton6801, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yes, mediocre. who here likes it?
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5OK well from my quick search, it appears that the original company still uses starfarce but this is a different group doing it for Linux...
So I think I will still buy it:-D
Also, in my short quest, I stumbled upon http://www.tuxgames.com a place I have never heard of before. They seem to have quite a few games there! Anyway, hopefully that helps any other Linux gamers, I know it not quite upto the plethora of games for windows but its a start... - gothsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah this game didn't fair to well in the reviews.
and @Kreuzader yahoo games isn't really a trusted site for a decent review try something like game rankings that gives a more balanced view.
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/562022.asp?q=cold%20war - valehru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well Counter strike source is running almost perfectly through wine for me. Although it is not a native game it still runs damm well.
Its always going to be the case that game companies figure that wine is always going to step in to support the Linux community, however it is nice to see companies release ports specifically for the Linux, I would like to say I would support this game but to be honest it doesn't look that hot.
Has anyone compared the price for this port compared to the original PC version? Is there a difference? - ocram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The coming soon list is depressing. :-(
- ontain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7the game for windows only got a 6.5 (fair) rating out of 10 on gamespot.com.
seems like this linux port is completely over priced. - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Am I the only one who thinks this game looks a lot like Hitman?
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Has anyone compared the price for this port compared to the original PC version? Is there a difference?"
I have been looking around at several different places and most of the games seem to be slightly higher and in a few cases, equal.
I think the most drastic case I saw was Unreal Tournament (original) was being sold for 30$ and last week at CompUSA it was on the 5$ shelf. Tuxgames.com has it for 20$, but thats still 4x more expensive. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish they would explain what it took to port it! This would help more developers break free of DirectX's tyranny.
- Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I have a job, I don't get very much from it and have more important things to pay for.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought it looked like Splinter Cell, except with some weird-looking guy replacing Sam Fisher.
- BufordT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5When I first read the headline, I thought finally, different factions of the Linux community are going to start threatening and tormenting each other. Possibly ending up with one Distro coming out on top of the heap.
I'll shut up now. - motang, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Can't really except everything too be free on Linux.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Too bad I have to pay for food. Call me stingy, cheap, or whatever, but these days the less money you can spend on your eating habit, the better....
You'll probably wind up staying healthier anyway. Unless your diet is 100% fast food.
I find that on days when I spend all my time sitting in front of a PC, I can get by eating a sandwich and a couple of snacks for the entire day. People have been conditioned to eat waaaay too much.
You should read how little a soldier eats per day, and consider how much physical activity they perform. The compare that to yourself. You fat slob! :) - zborgerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is probably the best place to download it from. I'm not sure that the one listed on the Mindware Torrent isn't the old version from last year. There are many updates since then. I was fortunate to be a beta tester, and one good example of changes s the improved ALSA audio support in the final version. The original demo had some problems, but it was fixed in the final release. Be sure to download this one from the LGP site.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dang it...my first paragraph got cut off....
Depending on the platform (PC, Xbox, ect ) I found Cold War anywhere from 15$-35$. Several of the companies that are going to be selling the Linux version are selling it about 40$-45$
Give it a few months and I am sure that it will drop to a more reasonable price. - bdmbdm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Two words...
HELL
YEAHS
I'll be trying the demo as soon as I can! -
