- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -2/+12Thanks for the info, I'm sure nobody who browses the "Linux/Unix" section regularly would have ever known that.
- bullox, on 09/14/2008, -1/+10Buried you for burying linux in the linux section.
Filter. Learn it. Live it. Love it. - someguy92, on 09/14/2008, -0/+9Yes. Do it.

- Phocion55, on 09/14/2008, -0/+6Wow cool. thanks.
- agsinger, on 09/14/2008, -1/+7Will it work with my laptop?
- TheOther1, on 09/14/2008, -0/+6Because that's where the unicorns and rainbows live.
- fritzek, on 09/14/2008, -3/+9Year without a single restart? Doesn't sound like win XP.
- Greg2k, on 09/14/2008, -0/+5Cloud computing is just recolored bush computing
- Katana314, on 09/14/2008, -2/+6Why is operating system an issue? The whole point of cloud computing is that you open Firefox, and voila, there is your "operating system".
- TheOther1, on 09/14/2008, -1/+5Let me guess. You installed Ubuntu last week and now fancy yourself a 1337 hax0r?
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -0/+4I personally (YMMV) get better framerates in wine with some games - such as WoW and Q3A - than I do in Windows, so I wouldn't really call it "nonsense".
Since we're turning this into an e-penis measuring contest, 45 seconds is about 20 seconds longer than it takes me to reboot my Linux desktop - which I haven't actually NEEDED to do since the day I installed Linux :D
*does backflip onto a motorcycle* - Greg2k, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3When I open Firefox all I see is porn.
- pyronik, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3haha i was looking for that
- santasing, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3You have to deploy the apps somewhere.
- befreiphone, on 09/14/2008, -2/+4I hate clouds. Why do everyone wants to put everything in the clouds?
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2Why do at home for free when you could be paying for it?
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Judging by the comments on this thread, I don't think a single person here even knows what cloud computing is.
- Katana314, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1Ouch. That one took me a moment.
- Elranzer, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Does that make Windows an effeminate, long-haired mama's boy?
- treed, on 09/14/2008, -1/+2Erm. I think you miss the point, actually. It has nothing to do (specifically) with the web. Nice try, though.
- youannoyme, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1Katana314, I think what treed meant to get at was it has nothing to do with what people typically think of as the web. I.E. a bunch of websites, where all traffic (generally) goes through a specific port with specific communication protocols. Cloud computing will use the internet, but not necessarily in that way, and so might not be tied to a web browser.
As far as OS... yeah, you could do it with any. That is why this article is called Cloud Computing WITH Linux. I wont even open the can of worms as to which system is best suited for this... - Megatog615, on 09/15/2008, -1/+2Enlighten us.
- Megatog615, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Clouds are just recolored bushes, and vise versa.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1"I've looked at clouds from both sides now
from microsoft [and linux too] and still somehow
it's clouds' illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds... at all."

Seriously, take a look at Amazon's S3 and EC2 services to get an idea of 'cloud computing' at this time. Then realize that smugmug.com built it's entire service on exactly this could computing. And... Amazon is using XenSource virtualization to deliver its service. :respect: - Fordi, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1*facepalm*
You must realize that the cloud's *hosting* has to be on one operating system or another, and that because of that, different concerns arise from different operating systems during setup and maintenance. - inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1RTFA. How's that for enlightenment?
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1I don't think anybody is arguing that Windows XP is unstable and buggy. It's Windows Vista that they are bashing (and for good reason)
- Elranzer, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1You can't even go a year without reformatting/reinstalling, let alone restarting.
- Megatog615, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1So how do I tap into this endless source of processing power?
- adamroach, on 09/14/2008, -3/+3Do these cloud computing shenanigans have anything to do with all the wind today?
- rento, on 09/14/2008, -1/+1Vaporware
- isny, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1Cloud computing is pretty popular on Bespin.
- fritzek, on 09/14/2008, -1/+0What's that? Some new kid's emo toy?
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -7/+5I don't give a *****, and most people don't.
and dont give me "windows is unstable and sukzors" *****, my rig's been running XP SP3 Performance Edition for almost a year now. I installed Java, Flash, Firefox, Adblock, ESET NOD32, Pidgin, and Winamp. runs great. it is just as fast as it was on first install. Never had a BSOD, never any spyware: no trojans, no viruses.
And i can install the fun specialized things: Adobe CS3 Suite, Sony ACID, Cakewalk SONAR 7, etc. Oh, and I can install GTA San Andreas (no wine nonsense) and play.
Why would I switch over?
Now on my ghetto little 800MHz 256MB laptop, yes, by all means, I would install Ubuntu, because it has the advantage of running on anything. But if you have a solid machine (like most people), XP will run flawlessly and reliably. - xjw29, on 09/14/2008, -2/+0cloud~who can tell how about it?
I can't understand it - Katana314, on 09/14/2008, -3/+1If you're saying it has nothing to do with the web, I think YOU miss the point of cloud computing.
- JimMayJr, on 08/06/2009, -8/+5yeah, but can it run crysis?
- chubbybubba, on 09/14/2008, -7/+3Cloud Computing = Hacker Friendly
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -7/+1i meant its been running the same installation. and i leave my PC on for weeks at a time. the only reason to restart ever is for installing drivers for new hardware (like my Yamaha MIDI keyboard controller which I recently purchased).
Oh, and restarting takes about 45 seconds. - inactive, on 09/14/2008, -18/+3Buried For Being Linux
