- StanStutter, on 01/03/2008, -2/+21From the article:
"If you use Windows XP, you may need to download Alex Feinman's ISO Recorder utility."
XP can't burn ISO's without 3rd party software? I didn't know that. - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -1/+17It's weird, isn't it? So many things I take for granted in modern Linux distributions that Windows doesn't do. Displaying PDFs is another one. Of course it's not so bad if it's your own computer, it's just a bit of a pain having to download stuff (especially without repositories!) But the real problem is when you're on a work computer without admin privileges...
- BLyn, on 01/03/2008, -3/+19sudo apt-get remove windows
- badassninja, on 01/03/2008, -0/+14The point of a computer is to do what I want, when I want and how I want. Windows is no longer made to suck up to the user, it now sucks up to big companies and puts the user 3rd. Big companies, Microsoft and then the user getting the scraps. Open source is made by the people for the people. Made to put you in charge of your computer because well.. it's YOUR computer. The day my computer stopped fully serving me is the day I started getting upset with windows.
- openguru, on 01/03/2008, -2/+14So, You say 2007 wasn't a Linux year ? Then just think about Asus EeePC, Everex gPC or Dell Ubuntu PC.
- peestandingup, on 01/03/2008, -0/+12Why?? He said he wanted to take baby steps & wanted an OS thats the most user friendly, well supported & easy to use. That would be Ubuntu.
No need in scaring off a Linux noob by throwing a hundred different distros at him. Some people don't wanna mess with all that & just need a nice OS that works. - lovekudu, on 01/03/2008, -3/+11It's 2008.
Applications -> Add/Remove -> Windows. - Spr0k3t, on 01/03/2008, -7/+15I think it would be smart for the author to give a few more distros a try in his trek to open source. Choosing a single system prior to making the change or even testing it out isn't the best of ideas.
- Magnes, on 01/03/2008, -1/+8Different yes, but not better (and not worse either).
- adulgo, on 01/03/2008, -1/+8That's ironic considering cNet is owned by Paul Allen.
- ItsSnakeOil, on 01/03/2008, -6/+12I gave Windows the heave yeas ago after asking myself why the home computer couldn't be as easy to manage as the work computer. Off went Windows and on went Red Hat.
Ubuntu gets all the attention, but there are even better distros. The KDE variant of Ubuntu, called Kubuntu, is the first. Red Hat's Fedorai, obviously the KDE variant, is definitely worth the investigation.
For those that do not like mucking with a system after it's set up, then Debian is a very good choice. Once you're set up, you can just leave the settings and use the computer. - druciferre, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6I feel I should point out what could be a misconception about Ubuntu version numbers. The author refers to Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon as being version "7.1". Normally it is completely okay to leave off trailing zeros. However, the Ubuntu version scheme is not like that of other software. The first number is the year in which the version was released, and the second number is the month in which it was released.
- nashashmi, on 01/03/2008, -2/+7you gotta understand that linux has a bunch of minds deciding a bunch of things. Therefore, you have more input+action. Microsoft has people working solely and only on their projects. Nobody works on windows as a whole anymore, and very few people work on improving its interface. Therefore, naturally, nobody thinks about basic software.
- hergenroder, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4I was a blissfully ignorant windows user for years. Then I saw a Ubuntu distro. It was like meeting your friend's new 19 year old bikini model / astrophysics PhD girlfriend. Going back to your morbidly obese, psychopathic hegehog of a wife is difficult at that point.
- nanostream, on 01/03/2008, -2/+6Ah yes, who could forget the good ol' Fedorai?
- secleinteer, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3For the beginning Linux user, it's best to try just one distro. Too much choice can actually be bad in some cases.
- Betrayer, on 01/03/2008, -2/+5This guy is funny.
did anyone else realize that if he moves to linux he will be out of a job.. he mostly reviews WORD and Excell programs from MS and he also gives you tips on improving windows.
(at least his 24 articles before he installed linux he did) - intangible, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3You plan on reinstalling it or something? Get rid of those configuration files!
sudo dpkg --purge windows - wigren, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Calm down, we can hear you.
- ompaul, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3lots of fun had by removing the tax on thinking and the counter intuitive locked up so you can't see what is going on under the bonnet kind of operating system and getting one that (A) works (B) does not depend on getting anti virus, anti spy ware, anti whatever software paid for and installed at the same time (C) Respects copyright! (D) provides work for those who know it - based on information not restricted with a paid for hierarchy - layered in magic and supposed hardness - get a life drop windows free yourself and your computer
- Nossie, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4urm... maybe because it's rapidly becoming more apparent that a PC is not 'Windows' and your ass is being left in the dust?
My guess is you are too young to remember the days before Microsoft. Microsoft stupefied computers... and not usually for the better.
Neutrally speaking however, more competition is ALWAYS a good thing. - secleinteer, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Take your rabid Apple fanboyism elsewhere.
- nashashmi, on 01/03/2008, -2/+4its funny how in the server market, where opensource has ruled for years, microsoft made a push and acheived market share quickly. Using this as reasoning, why do you think opensource will do the same for the pc market?
On the other hand, a friend of mine opened up a computer and found ubuntu on it. He did not know how to use it but just wanted to view pdf on his flash drive. thirty seconds later, he is up and running, and remarks "hey this is fun." - franl, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Open Source did not rule the server market for years. For years, proprietary closed-source UNIXes ruled the server market (Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, etc.). Only in the last 5 or 10 years (yes, that's forever in Internet time) has Linux and other Open Source UNIXes penetrated the server market. One could argue that Linux and Windows entered the server market at roughly the same time.
- Giga, on 01/03/2008, -0/+22007 was A good year for linux, not necessarily THE year that everyone is hyping about.
- franl, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Since when does knowing both Linux and Windows mean you'll "be out of a job"? At my company, if a candidate knows Windows well, but has no Linux experience, his resume goes to the bottom of the pile.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -4/+5"NOW MY OPERATING SYSTEM CRASHES ABOUT AS OFTEN AS I HAVE SEX"
- robche, on 01/03/2008, -3/+4"The future of PC software is open source."
Seriously how many more times do people need to hear this.
I'm all for Opensource, but come on, are we seriously going to digg up every person who switches to linux. - Nossie, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1that's what virtualization is for... or are you thinking too much like Microsoft?
- einfeldt, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I am also surprised to hear that a third party app is needed to burn an ISO. On the other hand, since ISOs normally are primarily for installing operating systems, you can see why Microsoft would not want to provide that functionality out of the box. Microsoft is different than Apple, for example, which has sufficient confidence in its OS that it even *invites* people to install new OSes with its Boot Camp software (so I'm told. I have never used a Mac for more than, say, 2 hours in my entire life; I prefer GNU Linux).
- secleinteer, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I gave 'Fedorai' a shot, but it seemed to be rather sluggish on my computer (compared to Kubuntu) :(
- Nossie, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1It's Digg ...crowd mentality.
I've nothing against Ron Paul (hell Digg is the only reason I even know about him) ... but that doesn't mean I'm gonna hijack every Ron Paul news story and hit the comments with cliché ***** demanding that no more cliché ***** gets submitted to digg....
hmmm is that a paradox?
Point I'm making is that the majority of people want Windows, Ubuntu, ron paul... paris hilton, apple, halo, cliché ***** we just don't all agree on what is cliché and what is *****... Digg is 'geek' for the masses.
hmmm oxymoron? - adam.skinner, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2fluff piece with no real info or rationale.
- has2k1, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Now, if he could only give linux the welcome Kiss it deserves, I may drown in tears and complain for once about being an emotional wreck.
- Nossie, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1huh?
- nashashmi, on 01/03/2008, -3/+3I dont understand. In the server market, open source has ruled for years. When microsoft came in, they gained market share very quickly and became a major player. Microsoft stole opensource's dominant position. So then why is that you think opensource will make the same achievement in desktop pcs?
- Reaperc2x, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1ItsSnakeOil Ubuntu is a great derivative. I think KDE is hyped by many too much, I hate the KDE GUI with a passion. But overall, moving to ubuntu for a newb, is the best resort. I haven't seen any other distro that has had the support that Ubuntu has. Gnome ROCKS!!
- Giga, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0Read the article again. He never left Windows, just downloaded an ISO that he hasn't used yet.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -3/+2Let me know when one of the CNET guys kisses a girl or something like that. That would be worth digging up.
- keyo, on 01/03/2008, -10/+9How does this cliche ***** hit the main page so often?
- nashashmi, on 01/03/2008, -4/+3lol
- Giga, on 01/03/2008, -2/+0Or every single person who mentions they downloaded the ISO and haven't actually switched. Way to pull in ad revenue with little to no content.
- keyo, on 01/03/2008, -3/+1Oh right, I get it, we need a front page article on every single person who switches to Linux.
- elvenseven, on 01/03/2008, -4/+2I'm not surprised. The same people that sell out Gamespot and declared Vista the _worst product in history_ beating Windows ME. Zero credibility.
- Giga, on 01/03/2008, -4/+2Also, any time MS wants to add something, someone sues them for monopoly abuse. The versions of Windows (denoted with an N) sold in Europe don't even come with a media player because of a court ruling.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -7/+4Don't come back windows never liked you to begin with.
- truspect0r, on 01/03/2008, -6/+3Who the ***** is this 'Cnet' guy?
I bet this guy will return to Windows without notice. - booshack, on 01/03/2008, -5/+1Wouldn't mac => no medal?
- truspect0r, on 01/03/2008, -8/+4Dear schestowitz,
Story got buried. HAHA.
Quit FUDding. - strictnein, on 01/03/2008, -17/+6Oh, so 2008 is going to be the year of Linux on the desktop. I thought that was 2007 or 2006 or 2001 or 1999...
