- microft, on 10/10/2007, -15/+104Why is it a Ubuntu PC? Why not Linux PC?
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -4/+50Maybe they tested it with Ubuntu. If it works with ubuntu it 'should' work with any Linux Distro. However its not good practice to claim it works with Linux if they have only tested it with Ubuntu
- tmcleroy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+38:( I just realized, reading this, that my once great gaming pc is now worth about 400 dollars.
- kevinmotel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34i didn't know the mac mini had a port for that...
- Clark3934, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31That's a heavy computer.
- FloppyLlamaDigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26And 'slackware' translates into "too stupid to use Solaris". And "Solaris" translates into "too stupid to write their own OS".
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25Here in Britland you can get an eSys box with Linux preinstalled for just $250. No assemble required. A fanlesss Xubuntu box is available for just 99 pounds.
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I love how the case costs more than the processor
- lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -11/+22*****, that thing could run Vista Home Premium pretty nicely. ***** a Mac mini.

Total: $241.45 (Before shipping, rebates, etc.) - pyrates, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Because it's a brand, that's why. People relate to brands more then the technology underneath them. Do people call mac os x, based on the bsd kernel? Geeks do, but not consumers. Be happy that ubuntu is causing linux to look good here. That is what you want right?
- ir6c, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10There's that word again; "heavy". Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10welcome to the club..at least we still have CS:S and HL2?
- Devrdander, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Being a long time slackware user, i only use it for special server tasks that are mostly hands off, for general use servers I prefer debian or redhat. Ubuntu is the cleanest Desktop Distro i've used so far and I've tried half a dozen. Also its wide spread support and use makes it great to use since help is readily available and availability of precompiled binary packages.
- reyalp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10every what? don't leave us hanging in suspense here.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Why the hell 939, you get get CHEAP ass am2 processors and mobos off newegg and you get better upgradeability. You can get a 3600+ x2 for like $10 more than that 3400+
- somegeologist, on 10/10/2007, -10/+18Or just get a dell.
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/dimen_n?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd - ExxonValdeez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11The article said they were going to install Ubuntu on it. Obviously you could use the Linux distro of your choice.
- DrSpud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I actually put together a PC for my brother not too long ago that had nearly identical parts. The cost was about the same, too. The thing is, you don't have to follow anyone's guide, you just need to shop around and figure out what suits you. Not going to use it for gaming? Then forget a separate video card and choose a MB with integrated video. Not going to burn DVDs? Go for a cheap CD-R/DVD drive.
- steven401, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Link please?
- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's somewhat similar to suggesting that it isn't worth buying soup because they'll give it to you for free at the homeless shelter.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah...Abusing a free service is not cool and it makes you a ***** *****...Even if you only have $100 to spend on a computer, don't go to free geek and scam them out of a computer, hit up Craigslist.
- Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7In the Apple section?
- BobOki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Mac covers all bases baby!
- Rickler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+53400+ 939 is 130nm fab; think of the money you would save in the long run on electricity with the 3600x2 65nm at 65watts instead of 89watts like the 3400.
- BangTheBook, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I'm a support engineer and I actually just migrated from microsoft exchange to open-xchange see at www.open-xchange.com. They have a single installer based on ubuntu. While I was more a SLES guy prior this has won me and my team over. If your new to linux try Ubuntu out first.
- HalFTW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Sterling.
- Grimboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4For the horde!
- STKD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Great. I did this a couple of weeks ago for much less. Bought an EFIKA board, PSU, 2.5" hdd and graphics card. Cheap keyboard and mouse, you have a working Debian/Gentoo/Ubuntu/Crux box.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Those are about the same specs as my home PC..only minus the $300 graphics card (which is probably worth more like $100-$150 now), the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. If you left the graphics card out, I'm sure this PC would cost you at most $350 (give or take a few dollars for tax) or so nowadays.
Still, not a bad deal if you don't plan on doing any gaming. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Most people who use computers are not interested in becoming computer gurus. They want it to work in an intuitive, logical, and easy to understand fashion. They want to use them as an appliance, not a lifestyle. This doesn't make them stupid. For Linux to make any gains in market share it will need distros that fit what the average user wants.
- shredswithpiks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Great idea for people who build/sell computers on the side of their regular job. I do this and 90% of the time the customer just wants something to do email, write letters, and surf the internet. Oh, and they don't want to spend any money.
- jekylltech, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Exactly how is this different then a $250 PC with Windows 98? I know everybody loves linux (I'm on Ubutnu now) but articles like this try to make Ubuntu seem like this crazy discount OS version when its just an alternative to Windows, nothing more.
- beforeseven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Because Dell's created a lot of buzz with their Ubuntu PCs, and they'd like to show you how can set the same up yourself, only cheaper.
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4How so? You can buy a Mac Mini with a 1.66ghz c2d and 512mb for $600 or a 1.83ghz c2d and 512mb for $800.
A decent 64-bit AMD processor and a gig of RAM already beats that as far as hardware and they both are using basic video. This one just costs less than half of a Mac Mini though. The point of building your own computer is to spend less money and to know what goes into it, not to mention the learning/hobby aspect. If you want to pay more to have one built for you then there are plenty of options like the Mac Mini or any number of basic Windows or Linux PCs. - Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Kill yourself then, there's plenty more coming.
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I see what you did there.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because it's a scam?
- maxtypezero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you could just get a dell, but it would have worse specs and cost slightly more. though you do get the year of support.
- BobOki, on 10/10/2007, -9/+12http://www.afrotechmods.com/submitted/gCube/DCP_0806.jpg
LINUX! - MacGyver2210, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7I paid $400 for a 3GHz P4 Win Vista Home Premium box with 1GB Ram and 160GB SATA drive. Why wouldn't you just do that? (Of course, I didn't like Vista so I got rid of it and installed XP)
- eliasg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He forgot to mention that this machine would be 64-bit (CPU and OS). Most Vista machines being sold have 64-bit CPUs and 32-bit version of the OS.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3pc in the article makes no mention of gaming or video encoding, which is the only thing your computer can do better.
- DarkCanuck12, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow!
"Operating SystemFreeDOS™ included in the box, ready to install"
Souds like a deal to me! - Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You could get a much cheaper case you know...
- maxtypezero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3yeah, where are all the Leopard stories?
- jeremymccurdy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Ubuntu gets attention because it's easy enough for the average Joe to use, and it's simple to transition to from Windows.
- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I looked up the eSys thing - it's actually $500, or 250 pounds (my pound key is broken)
http://www.thelinuxshop.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=45
on the other hand, I might be looking at the wrong thing :P
EDIT:
I *was* looking at the wrong thing, the $250 linux computer is here:

I've emailed for a spec sheet but had no response - I'm going to try calling them in the next few days though... -
