- 9mmCensor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Super expensive service.
I quickly made a real basic server config, and it was 180 euros.
:( - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You forgot one thing - it costs money.
- IAmAI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I would expect such a service to be free; I cannot percieve where the costs would lie.
- triska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Quick way to make sure you have no idea about the security of your browser. What's to stop these people from slipping in spyware code right into your kernel where it's undetectable?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A web server with virtual hosts and SSH and mysql preconfigured was 340 Euros.
Sure they are offering a service here but charging this much for a CD with free software isn't going to get them very far. If you need their services that badly you probably shouldn't be running a linux box this complex anyway/ - infectedRoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wow they want $710 canadaian for my OS. ***** this. voting as "OK THIS IS LAME"
- olyar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Its been mentioned, but worth noting again I spose... you can do this for free on the web site I run (www.instalinux.com). Feel free to un-dig me for promoting my own site, but I just hate to see folks paying money for what our site does for free.... Unless I'm missing something?
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is this just a Debian thing (haven't used it myself), or does euronode.com in particular only offer very old versions of the software? Maybe I've just been spoiled too much by Gentoo, but I don't like having very old versions of software installed on my system. I mean, no apache2 at all? No PHP5 option? They have mySQL 4.0.24? That product was up to 4.1.18 before they released 5.0.
For some reason it requires you to put in an IP address and all other network configuration... isn't DHCP available?
They let you have two hard disks, but the second one has to be a RAID1 (mirror) of the first! ACK! I want my space.
I like that you let you actually upload your web site (in a zip file?) to be put in Apache's web root directory.
My basic web server configuration came to $426.60 US though. Expensive Linux! You can download a trial version thought (that reboots every day and locks after 30 days).
In any case, this site looks like a really cool idea. Hopefully others could be set up for other distributions as well (maybe with newer packages?). - matthiasgoodman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Developement?
- lyso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Probably not quite as in depth (I can't get to the site), but free:
http://www.instalinux.com/ - GeniusCube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5errrrrr, no digg, i am not spending money on something i can do myself in 30 mins.
- CyberCrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3no digg cos it is easy to set it up your self in 20 to 30 min unless you are new to linux then you can just use the gui based setups that most distros have any way
- comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Quote from poster: "I couldn't link to the original article, digg wouldn't allow it for some reason. You'll find your way though."
Read before you're an ass :). - Huwawa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No Digg. I'm not paying for something I can do pretty easily.
- treehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3;i knew it was only a matter of time before someone came up with this. now i'm waiting for predictions 2 and 3 to come to pass....
1. build a custom distro online
2. build a custom desktop distro (including virtual package repository) online
3. linux "OEM" ISOs (distro customized for your specific model pc) - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This reminds me of that "Linux COE" thing I found on digg a while back, except it's really frickin' expensive...
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a cool idea, but as pointed out, very expensive, and the software is rather out of date.
I do wonder how the system works, as it would be cool to build something similar, but maybe with some better options. :-/ - lstep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Woa, the interface is not really nice (especially compared to Digg :-), but the surprise is at the end of the selection, 180 euros for the final customized version!!!! That's a lot for each option.
- cablemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second that....wtf....for a samba pdc they want 670 euro....f#@^ that...the time to buy/build and graft the packages and everything together is not worth 670 euro imo. ~_~ Jesus 670 could buy half if not all the hardware for the box!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3lol what a waste of time. you can do this crap yourself and for free, and much quicker via the debian install process.
- hugotheschmugo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Google cache (for those who just want to check the site out):
http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:Vipl16GmzXwJ:https://euronode.com/ &hl=sv&gl=se&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=firefox-a - piznut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reported as Lame.
Who is *really* going to pay a ton of money to run 'free' OS?
What a waste of bandwidth. - jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apache 1.3? MySQL 4.0? Bleh.
--digg; - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope, your missing nothing.. This story reminded me of that link, but I couldn't remeber the URL, ta :)
For a bare-bone server, with just SSH/Webmin/gcc/screen, it was €180... I didn't realise it was paided for till I got to the last step :
- Ben - RobotDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this service is more for people who have like 10 servers or more and want 1 install to just work on all of them whith little interaction from them. in witch case its a good deal even tho you could set that up your self it would take some time.
- aThing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is what Gentoo is for.
(Not saying that all other distros suck.) - sumdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why would you even need this for Debian. You wouldn't really be saving that much time. Now what distro this would be incredibly useful for is Gentoo. :)
- spoetnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would it be legal to chroot the trial environment, and undo the day-lie boot, and 30-day trial?? The software is GNU/gpl, an i only pay for their service, right??
Let's hack this product, en give it away for free :) - exoendo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I couldn't link to the original article, digg wouldn't allow it for some reason. You'll find your way though.
- asg1290, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is a very similar piece of software and it's completely free and supports all distros (rpm or deb)
check out http://linuxcoe.sourceforge.net - Incense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LAME! This could be a very cool idea, but come on. There is no need to charge these crazy amounts. Good idea, poor execution. No Digg
- esteban, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Looks like we might have killed it already.
- Quaitemp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Bandwidth?
- Funky_, on 10/12/2007, -3/+230 day trial? Wha?
- exoendo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3um no, neither http or https would work. As if I didn't think of that... idiot
- Vaslo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Thanks for linking to your blog so you could get ad revenue.
- FreeDeals, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0test
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -23/+4
Link to the page not to a blog jerk
https://euronode.com/ - skwashd, on 10/12/2007, -28/+3If you had have linked to http://euronode.com/ (which redirects to https://euronode.com/) instead of httpS://euronode.com/ I am sure digg would have accepted it. As you were too lazy (or stupid) to try that we all have to go via osnews.
Interesting concept. I hope you get more than a CD for your money.

What is Digg?
