- brisbin33, on 09/09/2008, -2/+29finally, a thought-provoking, content rich article on the linux section of digg. i'll bet it's lonely amidst the "[insert number] reasons to switch to ubuntu" articles
dugg. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+25Here's the part 2 of the series.
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/pa-ps3la ... - madcow53, on 09/09/2008, -2/+15Considering that the top supercomputer (Roadrunner) uses advanced versions of the PS3's Cell processor, learning how to program on the PS3 looks like a productive diversion

- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9The broad intent is that the software developer should use the PPE to herd data blocks from input streams to the SPEs, where the real computational magic takes place
- DforSpiD, on 09/10/2008, -0/+7Could you show your working?
What is the value of x?
Is there a value in which your craziness works?
Can someone solve this? - spectecjr, on 09/10/2008, -0/+6I have a PS3 devkit. And I can confirm it. No, Linux does not run PS3 games; it has a separate OS dedicated solely to running them.
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -0/+6IBM is kicking some ***** ass
- webresources, on 09/09/2008, -1/+5I think that's crazy. And the more crazy thing is the guys doing these stuff. Great..
- nickpick, on 09/10/2008, -0/+4May the source be with you!
- joshman5k, on 09/10/2008, -0/+4you deserve a medal.
- joshman5k, on 09/10/2008, -0/+4I didn't think linux runs the games on the PS3. I thought it was just an optional install, for hobbyists and the like.
Can anybody with a PS3 confirm? - skywake, on 09/10/2008, -1/+4I really hate it when people bring up that you can run Linux on a PS3
one thing: 256MB RAM
I'd rather have a eee-box running Linux hooked upto my TV then a PS3 running Linux - fluxion, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3not in total GFLOPS im afraid.
200+ GFLOPS for 8-SPE Cell processor (maybe slightly less for Sony's 6 SPE version)
probably something like 20 GFLOPS for a Q6600 (which is a generous estimate from what ive seen)
but it depends on the types of applications you want to run. certainly if it's highly-parallel vector operations, PS3 will demolish any x86 setup you can build for the money (UNLESS you consider using Nvidia/CUDA...then things get a bit more competitive) - paulsmith288, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3all depends on what you do. 256mb of ram is enough for some things when you use a cut down window manager.
hell , mythv frontend runs on mine. - highlymodified, on 09/10/2008, -5/+7But...but...b...b...but Linux must be incapable of gaming!
I read it in digg comments! It must be true!
I'll take comfort in my drastically impractical and/or overpriced and/or infinitely vulnerable OS, and just do as I'm told by cute commercials or market dominance. - leszek, on 09/10/2008, -0/+2where is part 3 (the function generator) ?
It is really great considering the insane prices of this kind of equipment. - highlymodified, on 09/10/2008, -0/+2(suck my balls)' = 2*(suck my nut)
F(suck my balls) = (suck my balls and one of someone else's)/3 + c
F' (suck my balls) = (suck my balls)
There you go. Calculus. - Elranzer, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Linux = Ubuntu = Linux = Ubuntu = Linux → ∞
Linux ≠ Gentoo ≠ RedHat ≠ Novell SuSE ≠ Mandriva ≠ Debian
Didn't you get the memo? - Evi1d33d, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Hackers are always trying to find an exploit to run homebrew on a console. PS3 got linux yet no one has ever taken advantage of that. Instead they are trying to run apps off the Bluray Java. It's like linux is too easy or something...
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Thanks for your interest, honestly i couldn't find it, may be it's not written yet. As soon i find it will submit it.
- fluxion, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1yah, sony opted to do their own OS. but that's just their preference, no major reason they couldnt have accomplished the same with linux. from what i gather (former boss was a manager for linux on cell development) IBM would've preferred using linux from the start.
- moog, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1The PS3 is powered by Java.
- SeoUps, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1I think that's crazy too. Well done.
- fuzzynyanko, on 09/10/2008, -1/+2I think they locked out direct access to the graphics chip.
- arjie, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Linux cannot access the SPEs. That is a problem.
- fuzzynyanko, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1I've seen more articles from IBM than Sony on making things on the PS3 for the general public...
- RonDP, on 11/18/2008, -0/+0just buy a computer!
http://www.acadapterz.com/compaq-hp.html
http://www.elbatteries.com/acer/ - ethana2, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0I'm sorry for all the complications with the Ubuntu ps3 port, folks-- but if all goes well, Ubuntu 8.10 will have a PS3 port that includes the vRAM swap patch, spu-medialibs, and everything should Just Work.
Unfortunately, we don't have access to the RSX and no one seems to want to actually write an OpenGL driver for the SPU's, so compiz and all that is currently not on the menu.
In the mean time, you can use xubuntu 7.10 on your ps3, and I hope you have long ethernet cables.
..I'll see you on #ubuntu-ps3 on irc.freenode.net :) - Syvergy, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0A Sony PLAYSTATION 3!? No foolin?!
- tama00, on 09/10/2008, -4/+3for the price of a ps3 i could buy almost 3 headless computers that could outproform the ps3 individually..
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -3/+0You might think you're the top dog now, but in a real dog fight you the bitch.
