How many times has someone posted "How many times has this been on front page?" or something very similar?
DAMN. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"Are there any big software companies that do freely publish their source code?"
Mozilla - RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Indeed, if it happens, it would be another testament to the strength of open source software. As I've been noting lately, even Microsoft will be forced -- at some point -- to fully embrace the open source model across their various businesses and software. It's the future of software development, IMO.
- cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13What's worse, You assuming we all use unlicensed versions of Windows or people like you existing on this earth.
I don't get it Why is Digg so Anti-Indian.
During the Cola ban in India a few accused us of doing it to hamper American Corporations. Cola sales are declining anyway in India. Scientific tests have revealed they do contain pesticides.
Racist comments about Tech Support. Maybe if your businessmen spent a bit more, they can get their customers better support.
Now this, Wake up This isn't the 20th Century India anymore (Ofcourse the West was responsible for its poor economic state then). The Youngest Nuclear Power, On the road to become the 3rd Largest Economy by the end of the year. All while remaining in sanctions for more than half of our independent (after 1947) lifetime.
About the less than $2 a day (Many people in India live on less than $2 a day). $2 = almost 100 Rupees (it's around 92). 100 * 30 = 3000 Rupees. This happens to be a lot in India and a family live pretty comfortably with it.
Either learn about Indian History, Culture and current economic state or please refrain yourself from making stupid comments like this. - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10mizniq: over 90% is saying a lot.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Here's my little Open Source proliferation story for anyone who cares to read it, because I like telling it. My company [of which I am now the sole IT guy for now] wanted to save money/time/resources. So I said "Let's just put Linux on our sales computers" [Yes, I know, GNU Linux Distribution, but I was talking to . . . management] and I ended up putting Xubuntu with a couple additional apps onto our new systems and we're slowly transitioning to an Open Source powered sales department. Yeah!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11They are so far ahead of the usa, here, people still use AOL as an ISP hahaha, how can those people ever make it to linux, they can hardly use windows
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6heh MS only sells to US and Europe...
in most countries people's annual (or half of it) income would barely pay for a windows license. infact I don't think it would. - neotheone011, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There are 3.22 millions of Indians in USA (1.5% of population) . YET,

36% of NASA scientists are Indians.
34% of Microsoft employees are Indians.
28% of IBM employees are Indians.
17% of INTEL scientists are Indians.

I was born in kerala, and you would be suprised. In the past couple years, there has been a huge technological boom in India.
"Kerala is the state with the highest literacy rate in India...."
"which isn't saying that much"
It has a 100% literacy rate which happens to be more than any state in the USA - Robyr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Wow, that was quite the bigotted comment. India is not third world, and they are quickly beginning to run circles around the US in tech fields. Not to mention, its not the fact that just India is switching, but that it sets the example that it can be done and that there is no need to survive on expensive *proprietary* software. India is a good example of how proactive government can change alot of social issues. So take you bigotry elsewhere, you *****.
- milkmage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@trollick and getrealnow
what are you implying? that there are no computers in India..? you need to read more. I find your comments borderline racist and basically ingnorant. most major US technology firms have operations in either India or China (and I'm not talking about call centers). Get a clue. - Khilona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If I were accept that guy's statement about a handful of computers in india, it would seem ALL the Indians are pretty active in Digg.
@warnetgt, does anyone pay you to make to make such dumb racist comment? Or are you really that dumb? Try googling for Microsoft India and have a look. Perhaps you actually think that Microsoft has put up centers in India just to cater for those 5 legal copies you think are in distribution
Do us all a favour and turn your computer off - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This really has little to nothing to do with Linux vs. Windows.
RTFA: "...the announcement appears to have more to do with politics than anything else..."
Note the political party that has chosen to leave the Wintel world is "Led by the Communist Party of India - Marxist..." - Khilona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@beotch
You deleted that comment. Anyway, here's my take on your comment on our Caste system
Yea! Caste system does exist in India. While you were busy killing the American Indians, we were dividing up the community based on needs. Each person had a certain job ot duty to perform. A brahmin was supposed to be the medium to God. A kshtriya was supposed to fight when needed. A Vaishya was supposed to do business and last caste was supposed to take care of cleanliness.
Though that shouldn't have carried on to this era, unfortunately, it has.. and will for some time.
But we don't nuke innocent civilians and then go for war against another complaining that they are making one - Voodooengine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Great to see the world opening up to open source.
For those of you who are making comments like this..
""population of around 28 million"? So what are we talking about here, 10, maybe 20 computers?"
Shut the ***** up. First of all India is the country that has been most hit by terrorism. Secondly we have had to fight over 5 war, and are still being bombed everyday by terrorist. We happen to be in the middle of 3 countries who just so happen to have nuclear weapons. In addition 150 years of GDP was sucked out in over 50 years, and we have had retarded ass leaders before, and we still have some now.
Hold you ***** comments to yourself you dumb *****. - cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ mizniq, then Why did Bill Gates announce Windows in 11 native Indian Languages ?
Google Bill Gates + India or Microsoft + India and it's you'll be amazed.
A Windows License happens to be 1000 Rupees in India (Around 20 Dollars). This is the Microsoft suggested price, I'm assuming it would be a lot less in stores. - Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm curious, why do you and the others here get so defensive about naive comments? I'm more inclined to simply dismiss them as uninformed, you guys seem to wish to attack them though. I'm not quite sure I understand the reason behind this hostility; while they perhaps insulted you slightly (they could've said far worse things), there's no reason to stoop to their level and insult them back.
- cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ beotch, This is what I'm talking about. I personally haven't met a single one who still believes in them all my life.
USA complains BJP is racist. Then why do we have many of "lower caste" leaders.
Has a Women ever been President in USA in 200+ years, Has a Minority ever won Presidency in USA.
The Answer NO.
Indira Gandhi was a Female Prime Minister. We've had 3 Muslim Presidents (although India is 80%+ Hindu). Is that enough ? - Irco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@internetworld7

- heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3way to go, open source is great. I just learned php (open source) and mysql (open source) and modded a version of zencart (open source) for an online store and point of sale.
- heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6whats your reasoning on this?
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How is the political leanings of the two parties relevant to whether or not they use Windows or Linux? I see it as less an issue of politics as economics. With the caste system still firmly in place in India (yes I have been there..to New Delhi anyway), most people who can afford a computer probably can't afford fully licensed MS software.
India has made great strides to escape the shadow of being a third world country. While I question their commitment to peace in the region (having fought multiple wars and major to minor border skirmishes with China and Pakistan) and whether they can keep their nuclear bombs safe and unused, they could be a country destined for great things if world events allows. They have a literate and educated (except for the lowest castes) population that with the right incentives could take open source software to the next level of adoption.
cmilki, you can't blame the West for all the problems that India had in the 20th century. Massive state sponsored corruption and a system geared toward the already well-off had quite a bit to do with it as well. Nationalizing the state's manufacturing reduced finished goods output that they are only now getting over. Add in border disputes with Pakistan over Khasmir and problems with Bangladesh and China (along with massive over-population) didn't help either.
Certainly the West had their fair share of the blame, but to make a blanket statement like that is unfair.
I wish them the best of luck with this experiment. More choices always means better services in the long run for everyone. - rotten777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@lustre
Microsoft cannot sell something that is able to be had at equal value but for free (or close to it).
If Ford was able to make a car just as good as a Corvette, but it only costs $5000, there's no way Chevrolet would be able to continue making money off the Corvette at 10 times the cost.
If Linux/BSD/Debian/etc. continue to meet and surpass peoples expectations and standards, it will gain more ground in the world of computing. I use world there because the United States isn't the only place that needs an operating system and not many countries want their government's offices or commerce powerhouses running off American (or any foreign) product. It subtracts from their taxing and welfare. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3any source on this ?
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another major market bites the dust, and Microsoft have done... nothing? Oh well - the world will move on and they won't, one day.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Voodooengine,
My only comment to cmilki was along the lines of his statement that the west was to blame for India's problems. I called him on it and he replied in a civil tone that he was referring to issues dealing with colonization which is certainly a valid point. The rest of the comments made by me were certainly valid and as I said, India has made great strides in escaping the third-world tag and they are deserving of praise for having done so.
Please don't equate me or my comments with the blantently offensive remarks by others. - cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Secondly USA ignored terrorism for 30 years and supports Pakistan (main nation responsible for terrorism against India) so got get a life...
We've put under sanctions for every single thing.
Read about the 1971 Indo-Bangladeshi War to see what USA did when we liberated a nation and gave them democracy.
I don't agree we have dumb leaders (atleast not so many compared to other nations). Our leaders in Assembly and Parliament are retards while PMs and CMs do a good job.
150 Years, more like 300 (British East India Company was in India in 1604 or around that time)

The Indian people are very well educated, and while they have the riff raff (you'd be ignorant to think the US or Europe doesnt have their own) the literacy rate is rediculously high. I work at a medium sized computer OEM here in the US, and every Indian I come into contact with (in Greenville, SC there is a large Indian community) has been extremely intelligent and level headed. I hope to the Gods that our children don't share your views on world progress. My opinon still stands.

my guess is the lot of poor (cheap employees) computer genius from there.
Still what he says is true
"in most countries people's annual (or half of it) income would barely pay for a windows license. infact I don't think it would."
In thirld world countries, the level of live is far less than the wests, you can eat and live as a rich with 10% of what you have. So windows license 20$ is not really sheap, but then you have the same illegally at 1$ ..
A funny example is when UbiSoft morocco made a game ("donald duck quack attack" or something like that), the game was sold in america, europe, asia, japan, etc., but NOT in the country that created it. - TritonX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+120$ for windows, that`s a fair price. Richard Nixon prompted China to attack India in 1970s according to manuscripts released by the Bush Administration (Thank God, China never did)
USA has been a major supporter of Pakistan.
The over population is a boon in disguise. According to the World Bank, more than 50% of Indians are younger than 25 making India the most "Dynamic nation on Earth". And by 2015 we will have some hundreds of millions of fresh workforce (sorry I don't have the exact numbers)
The thing is people don't give India a chance. Imagine how USA was 60 years after its independence. People compare us with China. China has had reforms for 35 years and has experienced growth since and getting help from the United States helped it a lot too. India on the other hand is a relatively new country to everything. The fact that we've achieved all this is great.
Look at some countries in Africa or South America. Nations that have been independent longer than India, gained large amounts of Foreign aid and still stuck in Poverty.
Jeffrey David Sachs claims India has cut Poverty in half in the past 10 years. Isn't that a lot. The media misrepresenting my nation is no help either.
Anyway Thanks :) - gene0915, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bleh, wake me when Linux distros can install a new NVidia driver without touching the CLI or downloading kernel source headers.
