- ScornForSega, on 10/11/2007, -4/+47Too little. Too late.
This is at least the second time that I've heard ATI spout ***** about improving their linux driver support... and every time before, the results have been absolutely worthless.
ATI has been my video card manufacturer of choice since the Rage128 days, but after getting burned in this mess, I just can't see myself ever buying another one of their cards. - Phlosten, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35Woot! Oh wait...I use NVidia.
Good to see some hardware manufacturers committing to better support. I am sure there will be many waiting anxiously for an update. - miga, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33Yes, the people with notebooks with ATI cards (like the MacbookPro). I would love to have a NVIDIA card, but I can't change it :)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Don't get too excited. You forget this is ATI. They'll probably open their 2D drivers and keep the 3D drivers closed.
If they did open their drivers, they'd massively oversell nVIDIA, and as we all know, ATI hasn't followed logic in the past, so why should they now? - japc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25Oh, yeah, right.
The code or it didn't happen! - diggapleaze, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26"The open sourcing of graphics drivers will indeed be good news, but it’s not a big surprise."
Holy *****.
FOSS Drivers...from ATI?!
Is the reporter mistaken, is this really accurate? How come we haven't heard this from anywhere else? Chris Blizzard attended the same conference and in his blog said only that ATI would release better drivers, not actual FOSS drivers. I REALLY hope this is true, but the cynical side of be knows better :( - chrispen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23You have to remember that ATI isn't exactly ATI... it's more AMD now than ATI.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22This is what they also said 4 years ago... nothing has changed
I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy a ATI product again, those cheap basterds. - slythfox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Let's not celebrate until the drivers actually come out.
- blusteel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16All I see now is an announcement. I'll reserve my celebration for when I actually see some code.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I read the same thing elsewhere and I was shocked as well. They apparently think about open source.
- MikeWanDo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16I have to agree that it's too little too late. I already bought a new PC and made sure to get a NVidia graphics card. I'm sure there are others out there who have already made the switch for better support.
- krif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13i hope the dell-ubuntu deal rang them a bell
and its not like they have anything interesting for nvidia to look at in that code anyway.
would be interesting to see how gaming industry reacts.
after all "linux users is not a market" is just a myth to kill. - raid517, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Well pretty much everyone is completely skeptical about this.
It has too much of a ring of a geek's own fantasy about it.
But if I ever see a single line of code from AMD/ATI, I will happily eat my words. - scarebear, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10HURRY UP!
i want to use ubuntu on my main system! - zachlutz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10As long as ATI remains in business, it'll never be too little too late. Sure, they may have lost this round, but as long as they're willing to stick to their promises, I'm sure glad that they'll be competitive for the next round.
- sfeldy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It's about damn time. Pretty much any screensaver that comes with Ubuntu is lagging like a mofo, and I've got a 256mb ATI gpu.
- AICkieran, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"Say what you will but AMD want to sell servers
and servers like Linux"
Servers also don't need graphics cards beyond the initial set up, how many servers do you see with crossfire setups? - ztirffritz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7They will be "almost" open source. There are pieces that are still not open source, but ATI said that they were planning to help work around those bits, or lean on the coder owners to encourage them to open source everything.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@rappermas
I never understood why ATI didn't support linux better. I have spent at least $2000 on video cards over the past 5 years. My first graphics card was an ATI in a Gateway Machine. It wasn't a pleasant experience, driver-wise. I tried to install linux on it, and failed misrably, and I have been using NVIDIA cards ever since. It was something about the corporate culture at ATI that turned me off. The sale of ATI to AMD has changed things for the better, and I expect that the video card hardware and firmware will be exponentially better. - antdude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I will believe it when I see it.
- wdwhitney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Of *course* this is announced literally the day after I finally gave in and got an Nvidia card.
- Loonacy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5As the resident geek in my inner circle I continuously field questions like "How do I get X working in Vista?"
I have to ask them, what does Vista do that you absolutely have to have? The answer, usually, is "Nothing."
Then I have to tell them "DON'T USE VISTA IF IT DOESN'T DO WHAT YOU WANT!"
Seriously, why are you using Vista if it's working less than XP? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5sorry ATI, thats like the 10th announcement we've heard, we might have believed it the first time, but there's this story about a boy who cries wolf....
- slowmotiony, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It's time for Creative to do the same.
- tyrione, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Bottomline: It's AMD. They call the shots. ATI is now a division within AMD.
- motang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4about ***** time!
- bickdigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33D games (i.e. Wolfenstein) works better on my T43p with Linux than with Windows (more FPS and no Punkbuster fatal errors).
- Dot.Com.CEO, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Exactly. You know why? No uber gfx driver support for it.
- LeeJunFan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Too late AMD, I got sick of waiting! You lost 3 purchases from me this year. BUT! Glad to see things getting better, I'll consider AMD in the future purchases again.
- Varz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"Too little. Too late."
Too true. I just brought a 8800gts and I never plan on going back to ATi. - AICkieran, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4BETTER ATI drivers for linux?
Proof that you can infact polish a turd?
Let's just hope they do a decent job of it and not just make a half arsed port. - Klowner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So which is it? Slightly-better-than-crap closed source drivers or slightly-better-than-crap open source drivers that the community can improve to the level of as-good-as-nvidia? If they actually understand what open source drivers are (and if that's really what they're going to do), that'd be the only thing that'd make me consider buying another ATI product, if the quality can catch up with nvidia at least.
- ekso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I got dual monitors working in Ubuntu with a Radeon x1600. There's everything you need on Ubuntu forums, it ain't that hard. But still so, the support is *****...
- supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2ATI drivers suck huge balls. Hopefully AMD can fix this aspect of ATI. Ive owned several ATI items that failed due to software or drivers. One didnt even do its CORE task, which was to show HDTV on my screen. My EyeTV usb (size of a thumbstick) kicks the snot out of my old ATI HDTV wonder card. The ATI card would choke the PC even when it decided I was worthy enough to watch HDTV. The EyeTV unit always works, and I managed to get at least 7 simulatenous HDTV playbacks all on screen at once in OS X.
- SmSpillaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Can they put GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap support in instead of forcing us to use the slow XGL?
- SniperSlap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is a huge problem for lots of people. Many cheaper notebooks have the ATI chips in them and it's either that or Intel.
Thankfully I spent the extra dough and got an NVidia laptop. I'm so happy I did, I'd have killed myself if I didn't. - miga, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There are many games for linux with good graphics. But also some 3D applications would benefit from better drivers (XSI, Blender, Maya).
We don't want uber drivers we want working drivers! - frase, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, if they do actually free the code, that's good not just for Linux users, but users of other free OSes as well.
Let's hope they follow through. - SmSpillaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Um, If you havent noticed - theres this thing called Beryl Compiz XGL and AIGLX which requires graphics support to run
opencompositing.org for more info - Misfitpierce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Bout time... happy bout this, ATI could do well with linux.
- jejones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does anyone have an exact quote of what was said? This is the second version of what was supposedly said or meant, and given ATI's shoddy support of Linux, I want to know exactly what was said...
...and even then, I'm not about to celebrate until I see Open Source drivers with total feature and performance parity with the Windows drivers, though given what Windows users are saying, that might not be enough. - kiwimonk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Agree'd ;) be nice if they supported windows as well.
ATI has always sucked at drivers. AMD may be able to save them with a bit of work. - mercurysquad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No, I think the biggest event has happened already with Dell+Ubuntu. That alone will cause a series of smaller 'events', better drivers being only a part of it.
- nukem996, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1AICkieran: Currently an administrator for a large number of servers as well as desktops running Linux. While you are correct that a server really dosn't need any sort of graphics card you still need a simple one for installing or if you just want to work directory on it(I know I can ssh in but sometimes I work in the server room so no one bothers me). We tend to go with non-ATI cards because of all the horrible experiences we have had with ATI. So yes I could see how this helps AMD sell servers.
- jacekpoplawski, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If they really going to release source for fglrx (maybe with some closed parts, which they can't open, because it's the intellectual property of someone else) this will be biggest event in Free Software world this year.
I use AMD (k6-2, athlon, athlon64) and ATI (9100, 9800 Pro) product for years. Let's hope I wasn't wrong by choosing them. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1sweet its about damned time ati drivers were sorted out for linux
- SniperSlap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1After (and not including) the 9800, ATI cards have been severely underpowered compared to NVidia's offerings. I'm not sure what new drivers are going to do. They add a level of overhead to the system that I would never be willing to accept (were I to run Windows). The cards themselves don't have as much to offer, and are flat out flaky.
The cards themselves don't perform nearly as well a the nVidia cards. Overclockers go gaga for ATI because they're cheap and they can see a number boost from overclocking a cheap card. Newsflash, expensive cards that get overclocked trump your cheap cards that get overclocked.
ATIs marketing to date has been a pretty big laugh as well.
Even the 9800 was a barely noticeable jump from the 9700 (now THERE was a card!!). So little so, that when I warrantied my 9700, I got a 9800 back, tested the difference and it was basically nothing.
This exemplifies the kind of leap-frog game ATI is playing with series numbers. Tacking an LE, SE, XT, Pro or 50 to the revision of each card to try and sap as much business from hapless consumers.
I say all this because in a previous life, I was a wholesale computer part sales guy. ATI is not that great of a company, and what they let companies like Sapphire and several other more noname board-makers get away with disgusts me. - cornelius1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yeah, about frickin time!
- CesarSolomon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0This is great!!! Now Linux users can play games especially designed for the OS!!
