- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32That's it, I'm going to dump ATI for NVIDIA. ATI is ***** on my Linux box.
- willistg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29they're ***** beta drivers !!!!
- XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15AIGLX is not related to KDE, it's related to the X server, on top of which the desktop enviornment runs. so you can run any desktop enviornment, and compiz or some composite manager, and you'd have fully opengl accelerated desktop (With effects).
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11For those unfamiliar with the acronym: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIGLX
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's too bad, because I was set to buy ATI the last round but the Linux issue is what tipped me against it.
- AlphaToxic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Do I smell Edgy Eft + KDE4 + AIGLX + nVidia? I can't wait to get my hands on that :)

Hit compiz.net and get on board with QuinnStorm's team working on their Beryl app, which is a fork of Compiz that looks to have more bleeding edge stuff than Compiz. - twljagflba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Phoronix has posted thoughts on these 1.0-9625 drivers @ http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=7393
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Think yourself lucky you have a box... I'm stuck with a Mobility X700 in my laptop... gah...
- Prospero424, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not true. AIGLX needs support for the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap function, which is only available in this beta driver for now.
- jdong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the Xgl X Server provides the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap extension, without requiring anything more than a parent X server that sports GLX.
But yes, nvidia drivers now work with Xgl and AIGLX. I'd like to hear some reports about how the two modes compare (i.e. Xvideo acceleration, running 3D games together with Compiz, and so on) - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow that was fast, I might just test that out though for some reason my X server failed on Ubuntu Edgy :( Doing a dist-upgrade now, hope it helps.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if KDE4 included it's own composition manager and called it "Komposition Manager""
It would still use AIGLX, which is the X extensions to allow composite drawing to work. KWin, KDE's window manager, already has some composite features in the current version (transparency and drop shadows). I assume they'll add some features similar to Compiz, or else everyone will just run the Compiz window manager in KDE. - hellocharlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Because PPC is practically a dead architecture now?"
Cell is PPC as well as the Xenon.... the former may be found in Sony's PS3 and the latter in Microsoft's Xbox 360. - Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think Nvidia can read the writing on the wall. Windows for a small part is on the way out in the corporate market and that will only expand once it takes hold. They have always been good writing drivers since they're the dominant workstation graphics card vendor and those users use *nix for those workstations. It's nice to see them picking up and making it better for Desktop users since at least in other countries outside the US Linux is becoming a large part of the userbase.
And I'm sure with China leading the way towards mass adoption Nvidia wants to sell them their cards. India is probably not far behind as well. - -dXs-, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2willistq, that was actually pretty appropriate given the case. digg for you.
people should expect these sort of failure for beta video drivers on the linux platform. Even the last 7 words in that sentence screams risky. - iatealitlebabie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great news none the less =)
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone told me that the latest drivers in the 8 series stable edition support AIGLX.
Is that true?
The release highlights say:
* Added support for X.Org 7.1.
* Added support for XVideo with the Composite X extension when using X.Org 7.1.
* Improved interaction with newer Linux kernels. - DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What you SHOULD have done is file a bug report with nVidia...but I'm sure you'd rather bitch and moan instead of contribute to the community in any meaningful way.

Don't ask me if you have problems, I haven't even tried it yet. - tecnovm65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice :D, I've been waiting those drivers for a while, I'll wait until it becomes stable though.
- Psykechan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Think yourself lucky that you have supported Linux drivers for your card. I have an GeForce 6800 Ultra in a PowerMac that nVidia made but haven't released PPC Linux drivers for. They made the card, they wrote the PPC BIOS, they wrote the MacOS drivers, they say the support Linux... Why can't I get drivers? If they would release the source then this wouldn't be a problem. Since they aren't releasing binary PPC drivers then no one can.
Can someone explain why nVidia is better than ATi for Linux again? - tmcc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@hellocharlie
That's great! Also, the human torch was denied a bank loan! - oliveroms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap need for both AIGLX and XGL?
Doesn't this mean nVidia's driver works on both? - rockets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would too, if they detect my SLI config. Dapper Drake can't. :(
- Megatog615, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Because PPC is practically a dead architecture now?
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if KDE4 included it's own composition manager and called it "Komposition Manager"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1damnit, shoulda known better than to knock KDE on a AIGLX thread.

holy poopmyself batman. looks like I'm not going to get my homework done tonight! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2I'm a jr in the CS program at UAA btw, I've taken an openGL class and I love c++. if somone is aware of a project that could use my help lemme know.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1that's rad. too bad it's KDE only though, I'm not letting that manatee do my windowing. not that Gnome is much better though. I'll keep wishing for my accelerated X replacement. then I'll be able to use my beloved agile enlightenment with even more eyecandy.
- KalElOfJorEl, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1Want to know how awesome the 94.xx drivers are? They completed ***** over my Hauppauge PVR500 (a fairly standard capture card). I couldn't get video to display correctly at all. Rolled back to 81.95; no problems. I don't trust these new Nvidia drivers given my recent experience.
