- shinda, on 10/11/2007, -2/+37Kind of late aren't we? The forums merged back in April.
- alanic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33What does "there merge some come" mean if you are so into correcting typos?
- nipuL, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Compcomm? That's a funny name. I'd have called it Chazzwazza.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I really hope these guys can get it together. There is still alot of bad blood between the two caps. The leaders of each seem to be pulling them together.
Its just sad to see how much time was lost with the fighting. If they can all start pulling in the same direction I see compiz and beryl being standard on many Linux distros - kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Beryl + Compiz = Coryl
- marnaq, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Here's my 160 suggestions.
#!/usr/bin/python
def x(one, two):
for i in xrange(1, len(one)):
for j in xrange(1, len(two)):
print one[:i] + two[:j]
print one[:i] + two[j:]
print one[i:] + two[:j]
print one[i:] + two[j:]
x("beryl", "compiz");
x("compiz", "beryl");
Output of script above:
http://pastebin.ca/564321 - brianboyko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16It renders wobbly windows.
"RenderBender?" - WWWWolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Yep - a good name would be TTHW (Thingy That Handles Windows). Metacity, or whatever fallback window manager is used, would be then named TTAHWJIC (Thing That Also Handles Windows (Just In Case)).
- snurfle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14like "Windows"?
- Greeneemer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Before it's too late:
Is it a coincidence that the name Compiz is so similar to the Swedish word for buddy/mate (kompis)?
Anyhow, this similarity makes Compiz a very good name to me as a swede. It sounds very friendly. - drlog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13But thats written in Java. Wont be the easiest idea but could be good to skimp some ideas from.
- Wyzard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11@matriculated:
Do you think non-geeks "understand" names like Aero Glass or Quartz Extreme any more than they "understand" a name like Beryl?
Anyway, once it's integrated into desktop environments its name doesn't really matter to users. - robwicks, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13They could call it "berpiz." The mascot could be a bear, ah, "watering" a penguin.
- rotarychainsaw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8They should call it that. In fact, more OSS projects should be named for Simpsons references.
- computergod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Blitz? Works for me.
- joearcher, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Clearly it should be called "The Titz".
People who don't check their spelling really ***** annoy me. - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Why merge everything. Beryl and Compiz were almost identical technically. Merging them is like cutting a red and a blue Ford Focus in half and joining them together. The parts match up, just needs a paint job around the edge. Combining them with KWin would be like combining a Prius with a Hummer and trying to merge Looking Glass in is like trying to merge a 747 with an oil tanker. Besides LG is very, very different to what the Linux compositing WM's are doing now.
- darkbird, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well, lets hope that this is the last of these "Fork fights" that we have in a while
- S0m3dud3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I hope they work everything out without arguments and create an even more amazing window manager.
- taoufix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@robwicks
Why not "compryl" ? - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -14/+18If Looking Glass ( http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2006/12/30/hey-wow-looking-glass-3d/ ) goes GPL, which is something that Sun seems fond of, then let's hope there merge some come to bring together the best of all three worlds.
BTW, you type the description pretty fast, didn't you ("...peopel are callign...")? - Stonekeeper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4My vote is for cober!
- coredump0x01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4X-Server errors from Beryl configurations? You should probably upgrade from the pre-alpha release :P
- knyghtryda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm putting my vote for Coryl. Short, catchy, and potential for a good logo.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@nipul
Compcomm is a development name, it will be called something different once everything gets going. On the Mailing lists there were quite a few fights about what the new name should be. The leaders decided to put that problem on the back burner and focus on the code. The hope is that once the two camps start codeing together they will start to feel like a team. Then a name will be picked.
For those interested the name that is currently most popular is 'Coral'. However odds are it won't be released with thi name due to a dozen diferent factors. - wootah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@kazamx
I agree, Coryl sounds kinda sweet.
Agreeing with one of the posters above, the naming semantics of the merger should be put on hold and the team focus should be directed towards the coding+production effort. - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How much time was lost. Both projects accelerated like mad when they were competing. Working together does not always mean working faster, often the overhead of communication wipes out any advantage.
- SatNav, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3they are doing this in hopes of creating a window manager with the stability of compiz (your bad luck aside, I believe compiz is generally considered less buggy, certainly I've found it to be), and the cool features of beryl as installable extra.
A good idea, in my view. the two are very similar to begin with, because beryl is just a branch of compiz. - Gonzell, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Call it Beryliz
- TheLastGnu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Technically GTK and QT are libraries, Metacity and KWin are the respective WMs for GNOME and KDE
- switchfrenzy5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Guys, what about Berpiz? (Phonetically it of course would be pronounced Bear-piz, eerily like Bear-piss :) )
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4No. Not yours.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So do I, but from what I am seeing just now there are just too many egos in the project. There is a good leader working on Compiz -core, but once you get outside of that its just alot of egos. Until a strong leader steops up and can handle the community around Compcomm, I have a feeling things will progress only slowly
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2super fun time window manager ???
Even though I use beryl, and used beryl back when it was 'compiz-quinn' with the re-merger they should just leave it compiz. Its less confusing, compiz, beryl, and now maybe coryl.... its ok just leave it compiz and make a killer desktop manager that leaves the vista and mac fanboys drooling. Its only fair considering compiz is the reason why beryl got as popular as it did. - searayman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@gmorgan
I think this merge is great. I am currently using compcomm and love it. It is the best of both worlds. Its super fast compared to beryl but it has all the beryl plugins and some extra better ones! - neondiet, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5
Glad they've done this. The Linux desktops need an answer to the likes of Apple's Core Animation for its coders to leverage, for the next generation of Linux desktop apps. Solid, unified, stable hardware acceleration is a pre-requisite. It has to happen, and soon.
- riah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Comberyzzle. Hollaaaaaa
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's what AIGLX is for. Hopefully we'll start to see accelerated versions of GTK and QT in time. A WM literally only deals with how and where the windows are drawn and how focus changes between them.
- computergod, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5The one for vista is called glass.
Maybe they could work with that and call it Crystal. - ElectricKetchup, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You guys are all idiots.
They should name it after the best movie of all time:
Dark Crystal - itanshi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2As another said, I like Blitz
- aldenhg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Why not izyl?
- shamer99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1bizerl
biz*air*el - ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Berylizimo
- 7of7, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5I'm glad they getting together but I don't know if I'll ever upgrade. Once I have Beryl running the way I want it I never want to change because it's like a beautiful house of cards, one change and it'll come crashing down and I'll be diagnosing X-server errors for the next week.
- ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah we need competition. Beryl was smoking at one stage. Wow loved the snow plugin, it is great on landscape backgrounds. Then need to add a rain, sunshine and autumn plugin.
- rouslan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Why are they doing this? I have used both, and Beryl has a ton of more features than the default Compiz included in Feisty. Plus it has less bugs, since I had many issues with Compiz. I would like to see them make Beryl more stable, because many people don't use either of them due to reduced stability.
- toxiclove999, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1wow this only started happening months ago WAY TO BE ON THE BALL!
- TheLastGnu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Aero?
- rramalho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Hope they find a decent name, and that the project can make a big inroad into the main distributions as a default install. =)
