- thecheatah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The new beryl has a better/cleaner settings manager. Which features a unified mouse gesture configuration. Which prevents you from specifying the same gesture for 2 different plugins. (one will overwrite the other).
I have yet to find the save/export buttons for the settings. Some of my settings were reset and I couldnt reimport my settings.
Im sure there are other cool things, but i havnt noticed them or spent time trying to figure them out :-p - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Don't you mean "Hats" off?
- mikeoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Intel cards are the best since they have open source drivers unlike Nvidia and Ati where you need to install their propriety drivers that tend to break things.
I say support hardware vendors the write open source drivers or release specifications. - automan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5it's in the sabayon overlay too.
layman -S && emerge -u beryl
i like it alot, especially the new control center. good work, guys. - phjr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Some changelog would be nice.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4your card might not support aiglx in which case you would have to use fglrx + xgl
- tecizak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Live Window Thumbnails (just like in Vista & OSX)
aww crap, this was supposed to be a reply to thecheatah's comment - nullmind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've used the beta, and the window thumbnails are really nice. I didn't think it was possible, but the configuration editor is now god-like! It was good before, but it's organized better. Having used Vista it's much better looking and seemed to perform nicely on my card. The cube switcher is coooOOol.
- tecizak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6buggiest release yet for me. Is anyone else having problems with the newest release on Ubuntu Edgy?
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well this is Beta^2! Actually I think Beryl just isn't '1.0' yet, but is out of beta stages, but this is a beta for the new version.

- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3fglrx is incompatible with AIGLX, switch back to "ati" or "radeon" and everything should work again, unless you did more than just install fglrx.
- oobuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i notice the site is down again. i hope some jealous eejit hasn't screwed things up again.
- johnnyhay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Download release here.
http://www.beryl-project.org/releases.php - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You would be surprised. Beryl ran fine on my 9200se at 1280x1024.
- oobuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i've experienced 2 lockups while using it last night. was using amarok and a few other apps at the same time, but i suspect beryl
beryl also causes issues when unmaximising windows such as swiftfox, it restores the window with the title bar off the screen - anyone else with this problem? - EnderTheThird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, after about 8 months of running Compiz/Beryl under XGL with my Radeon 9800 AIW Pro, I just said to hell with it and got a GeForce 7600GT. It kinda sucks spending $125 on a video card solely for running Beryl and Google Earth, but oh well. I have WAY fewer problems running Beryl under AIGLX than I did under XGL. Now if only I could install Ubuntu at work so I could be more productive. Some people don't realize it, but Beryl really does have some incredible usability and productivity enhancements that you start to miss when you can't use them anymore.
- Anubis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, couldn't find a really good link on the beryl website that talks about it much. The updates were available thru the repo's this morning, but no data except for PriceChild's blog on the planet page.
- tulsapoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The update the other day was awful, but this latest one seems rock solid to me. Not a single crash in several hours of usage on my Dell laptop with the Intel cheapo integrated card. Very fast.
- korteenea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Several days ago I updated to Beta1 from the Edgy repo and it broke my Beryl installation... Beryl kept crashing randomly and eventually reached the point of crashing upon launch. This Beta2 update fixed everything!!!
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's weird, I just got Beryl up and running with AIGLX earlier. And then broke it trying to install the fglrx drivers. Why didn't I get a NVIDIA card... grrr...
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Live window thumbnails? Like on rollover of the panel?
- sn00kie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow, hands off to the beryl project and team. Keep up the excellent work, we all appreciate everything you do for the community.
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2prior releases work great with my fx5200
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some people have reported XGL/AIGLX working on a 440 MMX. It is a very efficient system, remember the actual work involved in this sort of desktop is nowhere near as resource intensive as you'll generally find in games. There's no reason why it shouldn't run on lower end cards.
- dsn0wman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The release was totally broken for most Ubuntu people, but there was an update that addressed that within the first 24 hours.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2032189 - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very easily - you can use it on a Geforce 2, a PCI (yes, old PCI) geforce fx, or even some on-board intel stuff.
It also reduces CPU usage, by moving all that 2D drawing to the GPU.
Beryl/Compiz combined with Xgl/AIGLX can do more than similar technologies, works faster than all of them, has much lower system requirements than all of them and frees up CPU cycles. There is no "catch", it's all because of the design of the software - using the GPU instead of the CPU..
Revolutionary stuff, considering the competition. :-)
All of this is checkable and benchmarkable, do not take my word for it for a second. - williebee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ubuntu just updated to this, Pretty damn slick.
- libbydib, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Beryl has been broken for me since I updated to Beta1. The settings-manager works but no splash screen.
Radeon X300 andn Ubuntu 6.10. - teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been trying to install beryl for a day now with no success and just updated to the new version. Now i can get to the beryl splash screen but then it freezes.
Ati card support is a little limited - SimonGray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just updated to this yesterday using the SVN Ubuntu repository. The new configuration utility is great - much better than the previous one! I stopped using Beryl from 0.1.3 to 0.2b, so this reminded how fast they develop stuff for this project. It's great and very fluid.
BTW, I recommend using AIGLX. You can force it by clicking the Beryl system tray icon, it's in "Advanced Beryl Options". - Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have they fixed the white screen bug yet!?!?!?!?!?!?! I wanna use it on my Intel Graphics desktop and my Radeon 9200 laptop
- maccam94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.duggmirror.com
- omarciddo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beryl 0.1.3 worked perfectly for me, without any lag or other compromise. Since then, I've had increasingly more lag and "black windows", and I can't for the life of me figure out why.
- johnstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes it will.
- TonyMurray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys really should use the open source drivers instead of fglrx. The open source drivers are working great with AIGLX and Beryl for my 9600xt and my x700...
- ramunas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does, I'm using that myself.
- nazsco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at work (some onboard intel chipset) it works, but slow as hell.
at home (nvidia fast chipset) it works at decent speed, but locks after a couple of minutes. - j4n0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1fglrx + Xgl work fine together on my Radeon 9600XT, however fglrx refuses to cooperate when trying to launch AIGLX . It's high time to sell the Radeon and fetch an Nvidia card.
- nazsco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nobody expects the grammar inquisition!
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This video shows the greatest new features introduced in 0.2.0 beta.

Thumbnails of windows: When you hover your mouse over a taskbar button, a thumbnail of the window appears.
Windows grouping: You can group two or more windows and flip between them. - addicted68098, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DeJaVu

- rod123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will it work on geforce 6100 ?
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3look! the grammar police!!
- glev2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who cares
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Radeon 9200? That's not going to go well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Revolutionary stuff, considering the competition. :-)"
You mean Macs who started doing this years ago from 10.2 onwards.... - johnstar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Features more crashing, I have beryl and lately it's been crashing all the time, burning windows are sooooooo cool though.
