- klitzbtc, on 08/27/2008, -0/+22A "screen" mention would be nice. Screen makes doing any work on terminals so much easier.
http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Using_screen - inactive, on 08/27/2008, -1/+17#6 Bonzi buddy in wine
- oobuntu, on 08/27/2008, -1/+12yakuake, katapult
- erlkonig, on 08/27/2008, -2/+12OMG, It's opposite day. Terminator only helps a minority of users, making the background with Terminator so deftly covers into a terminal is just stupid, Conky eats valuable screen real estate and distracts one from working, Pidgin *really* distracts one from working (unless one is doing IM-based support I suppose), and the we have Gnome-do, arguably the only resolutely helpful tool, which will keep some people from ever getting fluent with the command line. Eeek.
- mynameistux, on 08/27/2008, -0/+8gnome-do > quicksilver
- awesty, on 08/27/2008, -1/+8How does conky lower the available space on your screen?
It is always on the bottom and windows are able to go on top of it. It just like it is part of your wallpaper. - T440, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Is that a question?
- BrokenCircle, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4There is no question mark so I am guessing it is rhetorical.
- MWeather, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4You get what you give, *****.
- MWeather, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4apt-get install msttcorefonts
There, I saved you 5 seconds of googling. - likwidtek, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3"It would be even better if we could setup Terminator with Devilspie; I will have to find out and get back to you on that."
QFT - strangewill, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3AKA: Be productive by ***** around.
Conky made me kind of sad for my console only server, I would like full stats like that... oh well. - PhailQuail, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3xbindkeys? I find that assigning shortcuts to launching applications saves a huge amount of time when on a laptop.
It also lets caps-lock be useful again, caps-lock+S = Firefox, caps-lock+Q = Synaptic, Alt+~ = Terminator, caps-lock+Z = Amarok, and so on - smotpoker, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2I agree with awesty. conky is displayed as part of the root pixmap unless you explicitly tell it to create a window and saves me from having to switch to my admin workspace and issue separate sensors/top/ps/tail/netstat commands.
Just minimize firefox, glance at conky, and re-maximize it. - Paranoidmarvin, on 08/27/2008, -2/+3Gnome-do == Quicksilver?
- Peterix, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1And I replace all that except for pidgin with tilda with the hotkey set to scroll lock and some simple console tools.
Add compiz and custom animations and it even looks good. - Ajnasz, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1What about a good keyboard based window manager? Fluxbox, ion3, awesome wm etc.?
- mynameistux, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1nice pictures, but there are lots of OTHER ways to tell us that you have them.
- infiniphunk, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1best program on Windows ever.
- xiaomonkey, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1While good to know about, I'm not sure if anything there will actually make me more productive....
- mynameistux, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2noooooooooooooo
- MrViklund, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1No! I don't want to!
- MattBD, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Are you kidding? I find that such a useful tool, although I do think Katapult in KDE is better.
- johndavidjack, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1dugg for cyber-fight...
- MWeather, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1I guess it depends on your definition of productivity. Some people think they're being productive when they update their anti-virus, run a scan, clean the registry, and defrag the drive. Some people see that as wasting a whole lot of time.
- RubberBinder, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1That's subjective. Gnome-do is much simpler and easier to use, but it doesn't hold so much as a candle to Quicksilver's depth of features, it will control just about every aspect of your system whereas Gnome-do really doesn't do a whole lot of that, it's more for finding things in your system. That being said, I do prefer Gnome-do.
- CptnObvious, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Agreed, these have helped my at work a lot. Also Konqueror since I can browse FTP/SSH/Samba easily. :) Htop is a nice tool to have that is lightweight, and I highly suggest learning the killall command.
- Derrekito, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1Buried. I'm sorry, this was stupid.
- kenplaysviola, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Does Bonzi buddy really work in Wine? How about the "Weather Bug" or the dancing girls on your desktop?
- SisyphusFragmnt, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0Yes.
- JerichoCane, on 08/31/2008, -0/+0In your dreams. Gnome-do is a shameless rip-off. But it's also one of the few Linux apps that doesn't suck. Copying FTW!
- InsaneSplash, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0Always great to see some "interesting" ways of making a administrators life better and more efficient. I am always on the lookout for new tools to help me speed up my productivity and to add a little fun to my work!
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -5/+4some fonts that don't look like ***** would be nice
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -4/+2except google wouldn't have been a ***** sucking ***** about it. thanks for the *****-effort.
- n0odles, on 08/26/2008, -9/+4I was all with the article until it had to mention Gnome Do.
- yessuz, on 08/27/2008, -7/+1Is this the year of Linux?
Or it will be the next one? - kishosingh, on 08/27/2008, -9/+2Do you think linux is better than windows.
