- adila01, on 07/30/2008, -1/+45Banshee 1.4 will be released in September and will include MonoTorrent integration, Podcast directory (Miro Guide), Playbin2 (gapless playback), UPnP, Device playlist support, Gnome Do support, Better Last.fm community integration (new API), and a 3rd party extension browser. I can only hope that this will be enough to convince the GNOME devs to place Banshee as its default music player.
- Pittance, on 07/31/2008, -1/+17I know its a Linux app, but I hope they roll out a windows version soon. Even if it is a bit behind the linux releases. Just something that doesnt suck up 50mb of memory just idling (itunes =/)
- podgey22, on 07/30/2008, -5/+19Banshee is progressing at a truly amazing rate! I would say, with the addition of the equaliser, it's now at least on-par with Amarok, if not better with its massively better Last.fm integration.
Superb work guys! Keep it up! - jakethemighty, on 07/30/2008, -0/+11Awesome. I missed internet radio in Banshee.
- podgey22, on 07/31/2008, -2/+12No
- kooft, on 07/31/2008, -2/+12"Yes, please infect the only viable Vista competitor Linux with MS patents."
C# is an ECMA standard submitted by Microsoft, Mono is an implementation of that standard. Microsoft can't suddenly pull C# or the CLI from standards and say, "it's ours now". They could take a branch in a different direction but the current language and CLI would remain unencumbered by Microsoft.
Here's a quote from the ECMA Code of Conduct:
"The General Assembly of Ecma shall not approve recommendations of Standards which are covered by patents when such patents will not be licensed by their owners on a reasonable and non-discriminatory basis."
So, it's safe to say that C# and the associated CLI aren't patented.
"I don't hate MS but it breaks point of using linux."
You're overly paranoid about Microsoft and refuse to research the matter so that you might debate more effectively. That's not hate but you're blindly dismissing a valuable technology just because the Microsoft name is associated with it. - ocgstyles, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8and hopefully scanning for new media will be included sometime soon too...
- podgey22, on 07/31/2008, -2/+10There are a lot of Mono haters that would have something to say about that...
- webspot, on 07/30/2008, -1/+8Hoorar!
Just need to wait for the PPA build :) - Killerah, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7You must have not tried out Amarok 2 yet. It's got last.fm recommendations as well as similar artists and other fun stuff like that. Then again, Amarok 2 final isn't out yet. But I have to say Banshee is definitely the best gnome based audio player.
- MacParrot, on 07/31/2008, -1/+7This is almost as annoying as "***** you, two of my friends were killed doing (name offending activity here).
- estvir, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6Are you.. being sarcastic?
- advix, on 07/30/2008, -1/+7This year Banshee is my favorite music player in Ubuntu. Exaile was the previous one. Banshee have better UI anyway.
- johnnyde, on 07/30/2008, -1/+6Awesome ! Good to see DAAP back ! :)
- Aitese, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5There was no story about a *new* Linux concept about live CDs...it was pointing out to the people who didn't know all the options for TRYING Linux (in this case Ubuntu) without installing or partitioning their hard drive. The confusion came when the submitter titled the article referring to Wubi but cut and pasted a paragraph about live CDs.
RTFA. - blorentz, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5This feature didn't make it into 1.2. Should be in 1.4.
- Hax0rJimDuggan, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Her sister!?!?!
- NTolerance, on 07/31/2008, -1/+6That laundry list is great and all, but how about some simple music playback features like gapless playback, ID3 cover art support, and music folder scanning. I still like Banshee but I feel that it's got a lack of focus like so many other "media" players. Better for media than for music.
- kob0724, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Any one know when this is going to make its way into the Ubuntu repositories. We're still stuck with version 0.13.
*edit* Looks like it already made it into the repositories for intrepid Ibex, but for hardy and gutsy you have to add their "PPA" to your software sources, which isn't that hard at all. *edit* - sandyarmstrong, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Windows version in the cards, after 1.4 I think I heard.
- abandonedhero, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Last.FM integration? iPod Support? DAAP? Nope, didn't think so. Not anywhere close to the same thing.
- fak3r, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4when 1.0 came out it was far ahead of where it was before - it's a great app now, let's hope that with the new features they'll look at thinning out the RAM requirements...I always go in and disable anything I'm not going to use in the plugin/extension section
- Induane, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4Actually... you're an idiot. Mono has support for most of .net 2.0 and even part of 3 and 3.5 including compilers for all of them. mcs gmcs and one other I can't recall... imcs maybe? I forget. Anyways don't spew untrue ***** just because you're 4th hand source heard something and you repeat it to sound smart. Shut the ***** up troll.
- tagnarth, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4have one last fling with the maid of honor?
- advix, on 07/30/2008, -1/+5Good to hear about this. :) Banshee's getting better every step. It will be hard to compete for other players.
- Frostek, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Pre-nuptual agreement?
- ptFoe, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4can it monitor folders? which is very useful for it's video section?
- sukimashita, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4After long almost on-pair feature race with Rhythmbox, I think one could now state that Banshee has taken the lead with quite a big gap now. Also seeing that Banshee's bugs focus more on logical high level issues while Rhythmbox's are mainly about crashes (C is fun!) and low level code fixes. With 1.2 and internet radio support I could not resist to move over to Banshee as default now.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4Novell's Microsoft deal isn't the focus this time?
Well then that argument is even more stupid - Think about it - C# is fully standard. What the hell is wrong with you people?! - snorp, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4If you guys have time, you should really try to file bugs for your issues.
http://banshee-project.org/contribute/file-bugs/ - Meekus, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3For an Ubuntu install, check out: http://banshee-project.org/download/
They have a specific build just for Gutsy or Hardy. - sandyarmstrong, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Those numbers are ridiculous. Where are you getting that? Does that include all of mono, gtk*, and gstreamer or something?
And obviously you don't need anything as advanced as Banshee "just to play mp3's". - paidhima, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3@allyant
I'm not knocking your system, but I had a similar issue. Years ago I had collections of music all over my hard drive, and on three separate computers. It all amounted to about 16k songs, and it was a nightmare keeping it organized, particularly when I upgraded my computer. I noticed a feature in iTunes that allows you to consolidate all of your music into a single folder hierarchy. You may want to have a look at it. When adding songs to the iTunes library, it copies them into a folder of your choosing with the hierarchy: Main Music Folder>Artist Name>Album Name.
If you've already got them in the library and don't want to mess with it, you can still organize them. Simply specify a music folder in iTunes, and use the consolidate option to copy your entire library into that one folder (in the previously mentioned hierarchy). It will update each song's iTunes entry to reflect the correct location on your drive, and do the same for any podcasts/playlist entries. - inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Surprisingly Ontopic
- CarzorStelatis, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Why can't you just drag and drop your iTunes Music folder onto Banshee? It'll then create its own library from your music files.

This is the home of the Ubuntu Banashee repos - pckbeta, on 07/31/2008, -2/+5Amen. First thought I had of Rhythmbox when I first loaded Ubuntu, was man this looks like ***** what are my alternatives.
- srg13, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4Quite nice, but it's very, very unstable for me... Hopefully this will improve eventually - Banshee looks really promising.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Mono is evil because of Novell...
That's mature...
Honesty, My usage of Mono does not effect the project in any way - I refuse to not use C# applications on my Linux box just to boycott the usage of some application that would have 0 effect either way. (Yes, I know .NET 1.1 and 2.0 work in Wine. But hell, if their applications (or at least the ones i use) are gonna also run in Mono, I'll gladly take the speed and to some extent integration advantage.) - abbathdoom, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Ask her to name her favourite music app for Linux, if she says anything but Banshee 1.2 then call the wedding off.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3So your saying... You don't see what's nice about having the ability to use your Media Player to get music as opposed to having to go through your browser?... You still need the Media Player anyways! It's integration with Last.Fm not just an interface to Last.Fm.
- advix, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3I just tried it, and have to say you are right, it's a bit (more) unstable. When there is no response from network (maybe other reason) the whole application is getting frozen. So I keep using the previous stable 1.0 and wait for fixes.
- NerveBand, on 07/31/2008, -4/+7I seriously don't understand what is so bad about Mono? It's a great framework, great language, works functionally. If it is your serious hatred against Microsoft, you need to grow the ***** up then.
- abandonedhero, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2Uhm, RTFA.
"Multi-Artist (Compilation) Album Support
Banshee 1.2 has great support for albums by multiple artists. Your compilation albums, like soundtracks, will be sorted and grouped as you'd expect." - scrambled, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2Still no syncing playlists to iPods?
IMO that's a bigger deal than last.fm - mudfly, on 07/31/2008, -3/+5Dug for Kyuss being played back in the screenshot. Then undug because its based on mono.
- doogly, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2I love banshee with all my heart but I need it to come out for windows so I can make the jump to banshee full time. Keep up the good work Banshee team and try to get that windows release out soon.
- Fduch, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2Apple doesn't lie? HA-ha-HA
- rfdparker2002, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2Erm, adila01's comment does list gapless playback if you haven't read it fully.
- kooft, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2WTF? Are you serious? Why don't you post some references showing how Microsoft hold patents on C# and it's CLI. Your ad-hominem attacks are getting a little boring.
