- Ademan, on 03/27/2008, -1/+25Actually, mono is NOT a patent mine field, only winforms is a patent mine field, which no mono application uses (Gtk# instead) this topic has been beaten to death and EVERYTHING IS FINE! Please, stop spreading disinformation, I'm sure you mean well, but what you said is just not the case, mono implements an ecma standard...
- adila01, on 03/27/2008, -4/+22I really hope that once Banshee 1.0 is released, that it will be the default audio and video player for Ubuntu 8.10. Finally a worthy program that can compete with Window's Media Player. This would add a clear and mature overall feel to the entertainment portion of Ubuntu which has been its Achilles heel. Now all I am hoping for is a mature Elisa to fill in as the Media Center program for Ubuntu.
- UKsHaDoW, on 03/27/2008, -2/+16You do know the new version amarok(2) also includes video playback?
- gabaug, on 03/27/2008, -2/+14Actually, you can. If you press / you'll open a search bar, and you can search tags, comments, and file location there. I added that feature on 2007-04-13.
- abock, on 03/27/2008, -0/+10Nope. Performance has been our number one priority. Read more about that in the Alpha 1 release: http://abock.org/2008/03/13/banshee-10-alpha-1/
- daftman, on 03/27/2008, -7/+17I don't understand the obsession with all-in-one media players. In the end you have a *****, audio player compared to amarok e.g can't sync with ipod, podcast, music store and you have a ***** movie player compared to vlc or smplayer e.g can't play stream movies, subtitle, and stream movies. What the ***** happen to the Unix philosophy? Do one thing and do it well.
- frogman54, on 03/27/2008, -0/+9I don't know about their software, but these guys sure are good at naming stuff.
- Ademan, on 03/27/2008, -1/+10Well I should further qualify that, mono isn't any more of a patent mine field than any other piece of software available on linux (which is a pretty benign threat). Like I said above the legal implications of using mono have been analyzed over and over again and no credible threat has been found.
- ptFoe, on 03/27/2008, -4/+12nice wish Fspot would receive similar attention from Novell.
You can't even search by the comments you enter for a photo.
useless. - stalefries, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6The same, I suspect, can be said about Gstreamer in Banshee's case.
- UKsHaDoW, on 03/27/2008, -1/+7I love using banshee
- gabaug, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6No, it's reasonably fast. I've only personally tested a 25K song library, and searching it takes about two seconds, and will be improved (by avoiding lower() sqlite function, for those who want the technical details) soon.
- ArthurSucks, on 03/27/2008, -1/+7A stable Elisa and Banshee 1.0 would be unstoppable.
- migueldeicaza2, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5This might be a case of a feature requiring to get some better exposure.
Hopefully we will get some cycles from the Summer of Code this year to improve F-Spot - UKsHaDoW, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5Although thats mainly because phonon backend made it trivial to support.
- FaustusSA, on 03/27/2008, -1/+6I've been trying to find a Windows app to help me manage video files much like itunes does for music for about 100 years now...
- MrErr, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5Finally something to diffrentiate between rhythmbox and banshee in terms of capabilities.
- KevinJim, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Here's the .deb :P -> http://www.mediafire.com/?9bhdg3uxbzg
- bejayel, on 03/27/2008, -1/+5Whats even more lame is iTunes. I guess if you love your slow-as-*****-ware (and some almost consider borderline spyware litely because of their sketchy installations and updates), iTunes is great.
- amoore260, on 03/27/2008, -16/+20My only concern is that Banshee requires Mono. Mono is a patent mine field waiting happen to Linux. Ubuntu should not even be using Fspot because of its dependence on Mono. What I hope will happen is that video support for RhythmBox will happen soon! As for the Elisa media center, it needs to get on the ball and provide better documentation at all levels, from user to dev! Elisa is a a great media center but some of the major pieces haven't yet been built for it! DVD, EPG, reliable networking, video rental and most importantly good documentation.
- employeeno5, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3I completely agree. Until Banshee can correctly move albums and play list to my iPod everytime I'll continue to use Amarok. That's great that Banshee can do video, but really, how come when I transfer, oh say a Bob Dylan Album, onto my ipod I end up with Aphex Twin for the artwork and the tracks in the wrong order? These are the same files that iTunes, Amarok, and Rhythmbox are all managing in a consistent and correct manner.
I'd love to have Banshee as my jukebox program, but until it gets music right I could care less about the video part. Maybe allot of those issues have been addressed too. I look forward to checking out 1.0 final release. - damndj, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3I personally think Amarok looks excellent. I love the interface and I don't care if it doesn't have Video. That's what VLC is for.
- zacinece, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Bigger Screenshots of the "Upcoming Interface"

http://banshee-project.org/Image:Banshee-1.png - bejayel, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Looks good, how does it compete with my Amarok install on gnome?
- Tyr7BE, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3By the same token, what's your music player doing syncing to your ipod, downloading your podcasts, and shopping on your music store? By the unix philosophy you'd have an ipod loader, a music player, a podcast grabber, and a web browser, and they'd all work closely together to the point where you almost don't notice they're separate apps.
BTW, Banshee does do all the music stuff you mentioned, except maybe music store (I dunno, it's been forever since I've used it) - fangorious, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Does it support shuffle by album? Are there any bigger screenshots of the album browser?
- eean, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2If you have a video file in your playlist, why not play it. Video playing for Banshee and Amarok will probably remain bullet point features only (eg not core to their advertised purpose or use).
- DarkDx, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I can't believe I have you friended.
Or was that sarcasm...? - hyperair, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2Hi there. The debs mine, so I thought I'd drop in and comment. It's built for Ubuntu Hardy only. On Ubuntu Gutsy it's a little more complicated, as it doesn't have the required package versions. http://banshee-project.org/Releases/0.98.2 for more details. Scroll down to dependencies.
- nirv117, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3will it still take 10 minutes to search for a song in a library of 50,000?
- Atomic1fire, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Another Derogatory OS name
- ScottoGato, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Yes, take a look at the categories you're browsing. Maybe Microsoft tech support can help you.
- mossblaser, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2I actually quite like Rhythmbox - it's better than it gets credit for!
- Ademan, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I agree with Tyr7BE, I think amarok is ugly as hell, and it really bothers me the lack of visual consistency between Qt applications, Gtk+ applications are almost all universally the same looking (which I know some people don't like, but I prefer it)
But you know, whatever floats your boat, I'm sure plenty of people find amarok to be good looking and banshee fugly. - skamp, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2How about implementing gapless playback before even considering adding video playback?
- Fraser484, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Great news Banshee team. Arguably my favorite media player on Ubuntu.
- patcito, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Actually Amaraok2 has video support, it just hasn't been released yet as stable.
- shakin, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1If all you want is a Winamp-style player then get Beep Media Player. It works the same way. Amarok, Banshee, and Rhythmbox are all music managers that have tons of features. If you don't want those features you can use another program.
- meeko81, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Sweet! Banshee rocks
- hyperair, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Alpha 2 has disabled the equalizer for the moment due to some issues which I've forgotten.
- coldmilk, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Errmm what's the difference between Banshee and Rhythmbox ? I find the two quite similar ...
- jrattner1, on 03/27/2008, -3/+4Amarok is still far more developed, and maintain but lacking video support
- bejayel, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I cant wait till it's marked as stable in the portage tree :).
- TheWindBlows, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1from what i know yes it has an equalizer.
- Megatog615, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Does it have an equalizer? That seems to be the one major thing most players lack(and is why I stick with Amarok, regardless of the DE)...
- TheWindBlows, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Yes, library based programs are annoying but, its the easiest way to make something cross platform.
- employeeno5, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I agree with you also. However I see those programs differently; I see things like banshee or amarok, for my own use at least, as a content manager for my ipod (read any portable media player). I see them as the one application that manages that devices content, even if the content is varied. If I just want to watch a video I'm using vlc, if I just want to listen to music I load an album into something like beep or even vlc again. I'm actually very fond of a little command line mp3 player called mp3blaster.
- TheWindBlows, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1it says dependency libc6 not satisfied but i have an upto date libc6
I'm using 7.10 - Ademan, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Banshee is mono based, and has an interface some people seem to like. I personally prefer rhythmbox, there are alot of rough edges in banshee that still need smoothing over, but I think it has alot of potential (I don't, however, care for the video addition, do one job and do it well, don't try to be a jack of all trades)
- mossblaser, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Rhythmbox's playback slider thingy fills the whole width of the screen, doesn't use mono and intergrates much more nicely with GNOME isn't a difference?
