- rmerrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11powerful stuff, once you know bash you'll wonder what you ever did without it... comes in handy daily, even for just regular desktop / internet stuff....
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why? The commercials are usually the best part...
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6About a year ago I was working on this project which had tons of different source code files (as always), and after working on it for a long time my project manager told me that all source code should have a 'header' stating that source code belongs to this company, legal blah blah.
I first thought how the hell am I supposed to do that? Then I realized I could use bash scripting and wrote my first ever script to do the task. It really is handy stuff. - nicolas17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Very well said. PHP is really useful for shell scripting :)
But anyway, the point is that doing a bash/PHP/whateverthef**k script is a lot more productive than doing things manually with drag and drop. - knomevol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5philosophically speaking....
when it comes to an operating system...
and one's choice thereof......
pick one that allows one to completely adjust one's world.
UNIX. - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It *does* get love for what it's appropriate for, but to be honest, that's not a big slice of the automation/scripting pie.
If you like expect, have a look at http://pexpect.sf.net - it's good stuff. :-) - bullox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mmm pie.
- m0shen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When it comes to automation, how come expect ( http://expect.nist.gov/ ) never gets any love?
- thecheatah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You dont NEED to learn bash, you can use perl, php or ANY scripting language. Which ever one you feel comfortable in :-).
Actually come to think of it you can use ANY programming language. - Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would have used Perl for that. Much less painful.
- m0shen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ah, yes I believe there is a perl module as well... The thing is, it can do much more then what most people give it credit for.
- reclusivemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wish there was somewhere in the UK you could take this. The last time I tried calling round to the places that supposedly offered it, no one even knew what I was talking about.
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1News flash: Operating systems can do batch processing. Also, US President John F Kennedy has been shot. No word yet on his condition.
- FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0In other news, you can use your car to get places with a steering wheel and gas pedal. More from Capt. Obvious after this commercial break.
- silentwinter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thank you! I was starting to wonder if anyone else thought this was terribly obvious! It's like, Breaking news! The earth isn't flat!!! ;)
- noahgift, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I write very similar articles here, but more about python..www.osxautomation.com
And I just wrote an article about passing the LPI Level 1 exam here:
http://www.osxautomation.com/2007/02/04/passing-lpi-level-1-certification-synopsis/ - brunson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Because expect is an extension of Tcl, which is a blight. Besides, send/receive in any language is a hack and a last resort.
- rmexico, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0and once you know zsh, you'll wonder why people use bash...
- dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Go Bears!
- silentwinter, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Not to be rude, but how is this news? =/
- DRTED, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0I always thought automate linux would use shells, but never like this, they are totally abusing their shells
- renski13, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0You better be posting during the commercials of the superbowl.
