- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+76Yes, it's real and it's brilliant. Here's a lesser known ad:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmxPfZtV6w0
They lost all the servers!! See video to see how it all ends... *smirk* - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59what makes you think the ad isn't real? whats so hard to understand?
- pufuwozu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+55The point was sharing knowledge. That has everything to do with the Linux kernel as that's what built Linux.
- minivanmegafun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+51This is 2001, we want our commercial back.
- willistg, on 10/12/2007, -15/+51Eminem is Linux
Linux is Eminem - ahlt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Why didn't you link directly to youtube? I mean, the site stopped responding after like 40 diggs...

(beat by a second) - rmw132, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Agreed, getting tired of navigating through blogs just to watch something that is from YouTube...
- troller, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30i saw this commercial on TV at least a year ago
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27That's a really old commercial. It's from 1999 or 2000 I think.
It is bad ass for sure, it's what pushed me towards switching to rather than just occassionely playing with Linux.
As I recall, there was a series of these IBM Pro Linux commercials with the same kid & theme. I think there were about 3 or 4 of them, it was like a mini-series and you wanted to see what it was building up to.
The really scary IBM commercial was the guy strolling through the grocery store sticking items in a trench coat, as if he were stealing things, you were watching him from different views, some from security cameras.
Then as he tries to leave the store, a beam of light scans his body and a security guard strong arms him, he stops the guy and says, "HEY! You forgot your receipt" as he hands him a slip of paper.
THAT was a creepy commercial. They were promoting RFID, that was a late 90's commercial by IBM.. - beatdown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Shabo, you jackass. Just link to the YouTube
- rmw132, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Uh...thats just for their PC's...
- Hellman109, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Im no Linux fan, but that is one great ad.
Very well done, but Im not sure if it will hit outside of the tech crowd.
IE, I dont think a single mum or dad will install Linux as a result of the ad.
It does get to the core of Linux in allot of ways though, pitty that all the major developers are companies though. - secuser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21It is real. This advertisement expresses Linux very well. I mean that you can teach Linux many things.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -10/+26While it is a cool cemmercial, "Ass Kicking" it is definatly not.
- munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16wrong. lenovo just acquired the PC division of IBM
- shaungc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Not really a target of the ad. This is an IBM commercial, targeted at sysadmins and the like to advertise Linux on their servers (xSeries, eSeries, pSeries). They're not trying to sell Linux to Ma and Pa, they're trying to sell Linux *servers* to companies. And to that end, it got the techies talking.
- RobertsRobe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17So the future is a white, blonde, blue-eyed boy? Where have I heard this before???
IBM: Die Zukunft ist Linux.
- djtansey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20This is a REALLY old ad. Years old. I found an article about it from 2003 - http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39116123,00.htm and another one here - http://slashdot.org/articles/03/09/04/1821217.shtml?tid=136&tid=187
Though I guess digg is pretty young itself, so maybe today's diggers weren't paying attention then. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I know for a fact that this commercial is real. I have seen it on TV, but not recently. I think it's a very well done advertisement.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This was originally aired during the Superbowl like 5 years ago.
SOOOo Oooold!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13why would someone watch this ten times?
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Link to creepy IBM RFID ad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eob532iEpqk&mode=related&search=
I posted it below but forgot to mention exactly what it is.
This ad scared the crap out of the anti RFID people when it came out.
Christians went bat ***** over it and started screaming "MARK OF THE BEAST!!" - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17what is with you people bashing something as simple as a television commercial, it is not to be taken literally, it is a metaphor
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Linux like that...makes my brain go 'doing doing doing'
- smfullman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Actually, IBM is currently still exists as a business consulting company. Lenovo is the company that bought the rights to manufacture Thinkpads.
http://www.ibm.com/us/
http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/ - Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I din't know Linux was Draco Malfoy?
Damn!!! That mean's I belong to Slithern. - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12This ad played during the superbowl years (I want to say 6-10 years) ago. It is also included as a sample media file on the ELive Enlightenment Live CD, at least as of 2 years ago
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's more about open source in general, then Linux specifically. Basically it's the concept that a large number of programmers sharing their knowledge to help make better software, rather than competeing and keeping their code to themselves.
- rmw132, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18I was thinking the same thing, definitely a young Eminem resemblence.
Will the real Slim Shady please stand up? - leohart, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11That's why you digg up the commenters who give you the direct link and then mark as spam for the original article.
- Esctalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Lenovo only bought the Personal Computers-division... They didn't buy the whole company :p
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"but I fail to see how you can draw parallels between teaching some expressionless kid a short history of nearly everything, and, erm... Linux."
Wow, the symbolism and meaning of the advert is pretty unsubtle and in-your-face.
You may need to upgrade your squishware, dude. - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like this one better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJe2Hxgw7Wg
Never seen a linux commercial heh... And they're old too! :P - warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If the new generation of computers from IBM is a little kid....does that mean my AS400 is a middle aged, chain-smoking, housewife who hasn't had it in years?
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Woa, just found it!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eob532iEpqk&mode=related&search= - chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It makes perfect sense, IBM is still pissed they chose OS/2.
- thermus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love Linux, but this commercial is only so-so.
At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I think this Apple commercial is tough to beat:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvn_Ied9t4M
Maybe someone can remove the Apple and put Tux at the end. It would still be a great commercial. - neilpan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It was ok the first time I watched it. I got goosebumps the second time... absolutely brilliant...
- mavsman78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53 Years = "REALLY" old?
How old is WinXP? - barnski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwEWxpOWOok
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@leohart
done and done - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"How old is WinXP?"
Really, really old. - imrambi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lenovo makes the PC. IBM still makes chips, hardware, software, and has entire On-Demand business campaign going on.
- ramd3z, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I have always been partial to this series
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZmJ63sHoKU - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So they could waste exactly 15:20. Bored at work, I guess?
- NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9It is really pushing me towards using Linux.
- warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7That's just what I was thinking. I remember this series of commericals a few years ago. They were good, but nothing to write home about.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that commercials is weird ;)
gave me the willies ;)
i got goosebumps! - NullaPax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good advert, if a bit pretentious.
Up until Mohamed Ali came on though I assumed they were all just actors.
Am I wrong ? Is everyone in this advert a leader in thier field ? -
