The key people looking after the Linux code are turning into managers and quality assurance experts. That is not necessarily a bad thing as the base of Linux coders broadens, but it is probably not what they had in mind when they first got stuck in. I just think it is an interesting reflection on what happens when something goes from a grass roots initiative to a real major force in business computing

How about proceeding in their careers? Nothing is saying thet don't wanna code, but more like that they have more things to do. Anyway, this doesn't surprise me. Obviously we'll see continuous generation shifts there just like anywhere else. If we would NOT see a shift here, and old "top" coders were still the top coders, then I'd start being worried. The important thing is that interest as a whole doesn't drop, and the article doesn't even touch that aspect.

It's worth looking at the GoogleTalks lecture Torvalds gives on SCM, hopefully by using the network of trust idea we can reduce the direct hierarchy and hence allow clever people to do what they do best rather than become glorified management.
