- billytwoiwlly, on 10/10/2007, -18/+199that's incredibly lame
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -13/+176Apple trying to retain complete control? Never!
- technoredneck, on 10/10/2007, -33/+145I was torn between a Zen or another iPod for my next portable media player, but it looks like that decision has been made for me now. Excellent.
- Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -17/+102Wait...I thought Apple was the company who could do no wrong, who was always looking out for the interests of the users.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -17/+86This is the overriding reason I won't buy an iPod.
Not that I run linux or anything, but just that I can't do a simple drag'n'drop to the device. iTunes to me is a really nasty piece of software, its bloated, and tries to take over everything I want to do with my media. - TenebrousX, on 10/10/2007, -8/+57The big deal is that Apple doesn't make a linux version of iTunes
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -18/+64I'm usually a big Apple supporter but if this is true, I may look elsewhere for a player when my 5G finally goes
- SuperSunny, on 10/10/2007, -24/+70Have all of you lost your testicles?
This was BASICALLY THE SAME with every other iPod, workarounds were discovered to fix this.
The iPod Touch will be HD enabled, much like the iPhone is.
Every iPod's functionality with iTunesDB will probably be discovered in a VERY short amount of time, and your precious apps of YamiPods and Winamps oh my WILL be updated to allow them to work.
OH I GUESS I'M NOT GOING TO BUY AN iPOD THEN! I'LL JUST BUY A CREATIVE ZEN OR SOMETHING ELSE WHEN MY iPOD DIES!
No one gives a *****. - deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -5/+48Apple: It's time for a native version of iTunes for Linux. I know you'd rather see people using OSX but face the facts -- anyone not using Windows is a potential customer. Supporting Linux opens the door to a large (and growing) market. If you use the WINE porting tools/libs you could probably get a beta out the door in a couple weeks. (Google used it with much success so it's a proven platform for porting)
- kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -14/+55How does apple build brand loyalty? By holding hostage items you already purchased via DRM.
- mrfrosti, on 10/10/2007, -9/+49So much wasted time reverse engineering something that should be an open spec...
- KanosWRX, on 10/10/2007, -34/+71This is one of the reasons I hate Apple. And I even own a new Mac Book Pro (Granted I can at least run windows on it). But this sort of control is what drives me to hate them. Itunes is the worst program ever, I hate using it, its slow and has to many "features" that just make things harder.
- cr4ft, on 10/10/2007, -19/+51Wow, and I was literally just about to purchase the new IPOD nano.
Looks like I'll save myself a ton of money and a lot of hassle - pixelbeat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36Since new iPod Touch disables Disk Mode I'm seriously considering in buying a classic. I mean, if you can get a real access to your 16GB device, what's the point?
- Ellipsys, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33But I bought it. And I might want to use it in a manner I choose. I spent good money on it, and if Apple wants to continue to provide hardware sales, they should know that people want to use a variety of software to manage their music.
- lonnieh, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33watch out for flying starbucks coffee cups and emo glasses
- jm1234567890, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31No, that's Google.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -17/+46Yes. Apple is worse than Microsoft when it comes to DRM infested hardware.
- kronix2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31I can't tell if you're excusing or overlooking Apple's behaviour, or if you're stating it's inevitable that a company's anti-consumer practices will be worked around by paying customers. There's no legitimate technical barrier to the new iPods being accessed by third-party software. It wouldn't be so bad if iTunes wasn't a pathetic pile of junk on Windows, but it is, and Apple is locking iPod users into iTunes for no reason apart from them wanting to force you to use their ***** software.
We shouldn't need to find a workaround in order to use third-party software with iPods when we've been able to do so in the past. I see three lines of action from Apple; the "ok, we screwed up" path, the "there's no problem, iTunes is fantastic" path, and the path where they simply say nothing.
What is it with Apple and controlling its customers? People (rightly) criticise Microsoft for introducing low-level DRM in Vista, but they excuse Apple when they participate in blatant vendor lock-in by preventing you from transferring tracks bought from the iTunes store to other devices, or from selling your legally purchased tracks. In this case, they've created an artificial barrier to prevent you from using Winamp or WMP with your iPod. - craftyguy, on 10/10/2007, -8/+35SirNoobius,
What better way to get your point across to a vendor than saying "nope, not going to buy your product anymore!" - TheSaladMan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27And I bought the damn thing off them, I'm not licensing the iPod, it's mine, I should be able to do what I want with the bloody thing.
- bowe, on 10/10/2007, -17/+40See folks, good all apple is just as evil as MS when it comes to opening up their products and fair-use. They want you to be locked into using their memory hog of a program as a way of begging you to purchase overpriced DRM tracks from their online store.
- tastypastry, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26I just bought the iPod classic (mini died) and found out the hard way that I can no longer use Winamp. Being that I have to use iTunes isn't that much of a problem but I would much rather go back to Winamp.
- goblindegook, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Amarok > iTunes. Unlike the new iPods and iTunes, the Zen doesn't force you to rely on Creative's bundled software.
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26This doesn't amount to protecting their IP. It amounts to locking you in to the ITMS. NO ONE seems to understand that the DRM on the iPod that has been there from the beginning is just as much a business decision by Apple as it was for the music industry. This is just another item to add to the pile of evidence that Steve Jobs is not really against DRM, but was just trying to retain anti-DRM Apple customers when he came out against it. What other evidence? How about not letting independent musicians sell on iTunes without DRM. Argh, it's really frustrating when people are convinced of the value of something and won't listen to reason.
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -6/+26would you say the same thing if MS did the same thing?
I am sick of this double standard - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21I agree with you, i like my ipod but hate itunes, i want to drag and drop, and manage the file names on the ipod. My brother has a motorolla mp3 player, its old, but has an sd slot and internal memory its drag and drop and has a radio to! its way nice
- JohnM5, on 10/10/2007, -11/+30Clearly people give a ***** if he has been dug up 17 times
- minitrucker007, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23I thank it's funny you are getting dugg down when it is true.
- slamtv7, on 10/10/2007, -8/+25I buried you because "Ok, thanks for listening, go ahead and bury me." really really annoys me. You made a valid point though, there will be workarounds. The "deal" is, just to inform people.
- kevinmotel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17it means use itunes the program, not itunes the store
- MillenniumGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16I think that you missed the point. Linux users have created solutions that allow them to use their own hardware (iPods). Apple already doesn't support Linux users since Apple's iTunes doesn't run on Linux. Your solution has nothing to do with the original post.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19If you paid for content with effective DRM, you have no one to blame but yourself.
- joemofo214, on 10/10/2007, -8/+23"/no one gives a *****"
about your opinion - inactive, on 10/22/2007, -6/+21Apple did the same with the previous generation....this is just a continuation of the cycle
update->crack->update->crack - chronichyjinx, on 10/10/2007, -12/+26Zen's are great
- babbling, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13For me, the bad things about iTunes are:
1. It is proprietary. I like Free Software better.
2. It won't even run on Ubuntu. It might using the latest WINE released today, but I still just want to use Amarok or Rhythmbox. They're nicer applications than iTunes is.
So, why would I get an iPod that won't let me use Amarok or Rhythmbox when there are other players that will?
Your next question might be "well, why is this such a big deal and why is it on digg?" The reason it is on digg is because we need to let people know that whilst previous iPods did work with 3rd party software, Apple has foolishly put measures in place to prevent that from happening with the newest iPods. - icewolf316, on 10/15/2007, -5/+18You know, there are other players besides ipod and zune
- gimpbully, on 10/10/2007, -9/+22"Apple has deliberately engineered protection against third party applications"
do you really think db design changes were directly aimed at blocking 3rd party? To think that this was anything aside from feature enhancements and completely necessary changes to accomadate new features is pure paranoia. - r0b0, on 10/10/2007, -9/+22The big deal is iTunes doesn't work on any linux systems. If it did, there wouldn't really be a need for things like gtk pod, and the go ahead and bury me thing was annoying, as slamtv7 said.
- Speed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13It's bloated and slow as hell on Windows.
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Welcome to Digg.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11MS has been open. Compare Windows Mobile to iPhone. Windows mobile is extremely open and it allows people to develop plenty of good apps, paid ones and freeware too. Of the two evil i would choose MS. the last thing you want is you hardware to be locked in like the way apple does. with software you can always pirate it.
- CptnObvious, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11hmm the installer seems to bomb out before it finishes installing, might be able to change some settings in the winecfg app though.
- joe90210, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13because people pay 300$ for it?
- wazzledoozle2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11***** only plays aac and mp3.
Most of my music collection is in flac, from ripped cd's. - Yareking, on 10/10/2007, -14/+24omg. What if i dont want to use itune. You just got a 500$ piece of hardware u cant use without itunes... itunes is really a ram eater and and for the video for ipod video it sucks really bad
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Even on windows iTunes sucks. It's todays RealPlayer. Everyone has it even thought it's a ***** software.
- foooey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11yeah, wait till everyone realizes they messed with the video output again, so you have to buy their expensive cables
