- BitwiseMcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+111Since when is a dual xeon a supercomputer?
- blackb0x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40don't forget to visit http://localhost for as many free accounts as you can useradd.
- ConfusedONE, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40Are you saying supercomputers are behind 9/11? OH NO!!!
Wow, your name is very fitting stupidppl. What is this, your 3rd or 4th spamming account? - vinbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Supercomputer? One dual processor machine is no supercomputer, it's not even a decent server.
Even a something like a HP Superdome with 128 processors and a couple of Terabytes of RAM is no supercomputer. - securegeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Now that it's been on digg, what do you think the chances of getting a free account will be?
- Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21CoLL1eR is just some rude spammer in the IRC trying to keep people from using this service.
- spaztech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17@blackbox "don't forget to visit http://localhost for as many free accounts as you can useradd."
I get this error message:
Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
Must be the Digg Effect. :p - xAXISx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15C'mon it was a joke, where is your supercomputing spirit digg?

for free shell accounts - nazgjunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It's actually a great service. Of course, you need to have some half-decent reason why you should get an account, but the admins are pretty relaxed on it. Also, if you need any additional packages installed, you can usually ask the admins. Oh well, check the site.
- felderado, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11dont abuse this ***** please....
- Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I fell asleep unexpectedly halfway through reading the name
- felderado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7it's called a shell account. that means ssh access because there's nothing else really reasonably secure to give you remote shell access.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I have just gotten a 5-perahertz supercomputer and all I got was this lousy... 5 megs...err... t-shirt...
- TheLinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7But a guy named Cyraq submitted this story. ;)
- breakaway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Only 5 MB disk space?
- scrubadub, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15From IRC...
CoLL1eR: Attention Digg Users there are NO Shells Available - bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Is this just one Dual Xeon server with 8GB of RAM? I mean, how many shell accounts are they intending to hand out? It says 5MB of space per user, but all I'd imagine they'll run out of CPU/RAM resources far before they run out of disk space.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No way.
Thanks for that piece of info. It made my day. - jdong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7And, in an attempt to set a digg-down record.... It runs Gentoo! ;-)
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's cool, but I'm kind of stumped about the point of public access shell accounts. What can I do on them that I can't do on my own machine?
- Monoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been using Free Shell for a long time. It's a good service. If you pay $30 you get a ton more features, space, and bandwidth that never expire.
It does look like Anapnea is more relaxed though. Free Shell has taken away some of the programs and things you can do because of abuse. - CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just enough to run Folding @ home console version and bring the system to it's knees.
- thebman990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just signed up there. Looks pretty cool.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I find it blocks my airways when I sleep.
- lordkenthegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Used it for several days already. Its good.
- wordz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2got an account. But, other ssh connections blocked from my work place.
Is there a way to connect to this and surf the net? - lordkenthegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like you needed a shell account to do that.
- noxell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3!register
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The question would rather be at what point that amount of mips stopped being reserved to supercomputers. I am pretty sure this was a supercomputer by 1970's standards.
- angryroot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cyraq's really sympathetic if you have a good reason to ask for a shell account (which I do).
- CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can, dig first then bury.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If nothing else, is your home machine in a data-center, on a 100Mbit connection?
One thing, from reading the site, why do they include ctorrent, but only give you 5MB space?
- Ben - fishsoda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.freeshell.org aka http://sdf.lonestar.org
SDF has been around since 1987. They run NetBSD and provide a wide range of services.
http://sdf.lonestar.org/index.cgi?access
Basic access is free (or $1). Additional access and features can be donated for as needed. Make sure to login and type 'bboard' to visit the message board via the shell. Type 'com' to chat with other SDF members.
Shell accounts are not for everyone, but if you are looking for a solid UNIX community SDF is great. - nazgjunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Right... atm the IRC is flooding a bit, the digg seems to have been a little more efficient that we thought. cyraq is (afaik) currently working on handling pending shell requests, and it /is/ going to take a while.
Guys, cyraq knows it's not actually a supercomputer, well duh. Ever heard of marketing? Compared to a lot of the free shell machines I've heard of it is Deep Blue.
For anyone who wants a free shell right now, mail, don't try to ask for a shell on IRC. Of course, get your geeky asses on IRC right now, there's a community to be kept alive and on cocaine. - FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Do they let you start a remote X server? That'd be cool.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What good is a 100mbit connection with no servers? It's a waste of time.
- MatrimCauthon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a former SD user, sorry, but I can't recommend SD anymore. There used to be a time when the IRC client I parked on it would stay connected for months at a time. Now I'm lucky to get a day where there aren't network or server problems.
- Cyraq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1foshaug: got digg'ed into oblivion? The server is running better than ever, and we are close to 440 users. If you would like an account, check out the website. Oh, and SSH was always available on port 443 as well.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I see this is free but it offers only 5 MB storage. I haven't used them but http://linode.com/ offers extremely cheap hosting and they offer quite a bit of storage. With linode they use User Mode Linux and provide you with your own virtual machine that you can work in, it appears as your own dedicated machine. The concept is pretty neat.
- mootaccount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just got a shell account. You should have a valid reason.
- Cyraq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, I really don't get this. When I offer a free service, I'd like to give an account to someone who will use it to learn coding, compile and explore unix. Not to someone who needs an account to ping his server every few hours, like that can't be done locally with a cronjob, or heck, from a mobile phone.
- dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish I could digg this story and also bury it as inaccurate. It's certainly a nice service, but it's certainly not on a supercomputer. That's just a normal server.
- Innatech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There's nothing you can do with this 'service' that you can't do with DSL on a Windows machine or Ubuntu Live CD."
This is a Linux shell on a remote system you can SSH/telnet to from anywhere. (Like, say, from a work or school environment.) If you don't understand what that means (as your post suggests), or don't consider it to be a 'service' worthy of your exalted attention, then don't use it.
Your post was the Digg equivalent of a chimp throwing poo at something unfamiliar and therefore scary and upsetting. - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There used to be a popular free shell service years ago (I forget what it was called) but it became worthless after the constant abuse caused most sites/services to block it.
- breakaway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So is there SSH access or not?
- Cyraq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1try connecting via port 443.
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I 've used them in the past...they were fantastic.
Sure their plans are a little weaker than some other VPS's (which is why I needed to switch) but for general linux serving for personal use and even moderate duty stuff, they are fantastic.)
Oh, and their control panel is to die for.
Not that this has anything to do with the main story. -
