Google is not Microsoft BTW. It realeases quite a bunch of soft under GPL, BSD or other open source license, funds Google Summer of Code and so on and so on.
Instead of employing an army of layers to pattent everything and sue everyone they can. - glinsvad, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3Wikipedia: "Utopia" is sometimes used pejoratively, in reference to an unrealistic ideal that is impossible to achieve.

Unrealistic yes. Impossible no. - sepelester, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2He liked kernel coding and he needed a free unix variant, so he started coding on it. Then he released it for free to get some help with it. Since then, thousands have contributed to the linux kernel. That is the spirit of the open source world. You don't really think Torvalds wrote it himself, do you?

- ieee, on 10/24/2008, -0/+1The crow jewel of free(dom) software ( not necessarily "open source", a distinct but related movement ) , Linux, is written ( the kernel ) by Linus Torvalds who was publicly stated that he doesn't care about the ideals, he just like kernel coding.
