- ileftfark, on 07/28/2008, -0/+23If you're fairly comfortable with Unix/Unix-like commands, but aren't an expert yet, download this .pdf and print it out: http://files.fosswire.com/2007/08/fwunixref.pdf
- flashpanda, on 07/28/2008, -1/+21Why is this frontpage news. Not hating on Linux here, it just seems...weak...for a frontpage article.
- trollick, on 07/28/2008, -2/+21Duplicate story. I dugg that ***** in 1950.

- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7The people who think the command line is "too hard" or something are the same people who don't realize it takes less than 30 seconds to search on Google to find out exactly how to do things. I've been running Ubuntu for almost a year now, and yea I picked stuff up over time, but by no means did I have to memorize anything. I run into problems sometimes if there's something specific that I want to do, but I have never run into anything that hasn't already been solved and is just a matter of doing something rather trivial.
And even when I had to struggle a bit to get something to work, I enjoyed working through it and learning. But I guess that's my personality.
Linux isn't for everyone, but next time you reformat or something, just try it. - poet, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6killall digg
- JBmtk, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7Ubuntu has the effects like Vista and functionality of XP, but both run up a notch. Only thing is that most popular PC games are for windows, but thats why you have create 2 main partitions. Honestly people, you should try it.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6echo "Thanks, useful"
- cesclaveria, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6if something fails, remember to use --force-yes
- kd420, on 07/28/2008, -2/+7Might have been better if he wrote a bit more than navigating the file system. Most new Linux users know in general what the command line is, just not how to use it productively. Still, it is fun to mess around with the basics, which seems big compared to anything done on windows.
- cesclaveria, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4that attitude has kept linux down for many years, new users should always be welcomed, and nicer GUIs are a way to make them feel comfortable, then you introduce the CLI and hook up some new power users
- duk0r, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4To Linux newbies: Don't run that command unless you want your ***** wiped out.
- billbugger, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4Punch-carded it in 1948
- superyounan1, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4lol, that was bad
- da5id, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4Command lines? Wusses. Real men use punch cards!
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Agreed speeds up the system a hell of a lot
- cesclaveria, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3I do not see anything wrong with that statement, he means that most linux distros have the same commands, and they do. I have worked with debian (and derivates), red hat, solaris, gentoo, suse and some others, and most of the time when you log in with ssh, if the welcome message do not says what distro is you cant tell the difference.
- jamangold, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4Thank you for sharing your opinion. How it related to the article in question is beyond me, but I can't argue with your attempt to be helpful. Thank you and good evening.
- marx2k, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4"i shouldn't have to, its 2008 plus i dont have the damn time to, and most people dont!"
No one's forcing you to learn anything. Learning is a reward in itself. Yes, it's 2008. Was there a memo in 2007 that I missed that addressed everyone ceasing to learn? Just because you don't have the time to learn anything (that's depressing) doesn't mean other people don't have the time to. Other people do have the time to, but they choose to watch TV, play video games, surf cute puppy sites, whatever. No one forces them to learn anything either, but then why do I need to hear bitching from people who refuse to sit down for a few minutes to learn a few simple things? - cgibbo, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3you forgot -9
- Tribis, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3What is up with all the sub-par Linux articles?
- depro9, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Thanks, I try.
- jamangold, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Hard-wired it in 1943.
- ianthepetrock, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2New users to linux really don't need the command line ever these days.
- cesclaveria, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3it is 2008, so?
I guess if you work by using word, excel or something like that, learning to use the CLI has little practical use, but if you work on any kind of development (specially web related) learning your way trough the command line can save you many times.
Also, if you want to really learn and use the power of a *nix system, the cli is the best tool you have. - Dochtuir, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2ok
- marx2k, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2The problem is most people new to Linux refuse to even learn this much. And then they bitch that Linux is impossible because you have to learn the dreaded CLI.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2digg nerds, not linux nerds, digg up this crap... linux nerds have no use for this article
- wiifm69, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Dugg your comment, buried the article.
- element247, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2What a useless article. Some of you people will digg anything that says "Linux"
- 4321234, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3 whatis up with all the sub-par Linux articles?
up: nothing appropriate.
with: nothing appropriate.
all: nothing appropriate.
the: nothing appropriate.
sub-par: nothing appropriate.
Linux: nothing appropriate.
articles?: nothing appropriate. - luzai, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2Productivity? Imagine you have 100 files in a directory and you want to copy 75 of them to another directory. I have to type those ***** one by one in command line right? You call that productivity?
- talonh, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2DO NOT run that command at home because it is still in very early alpha, not even beta yet. The command will run, but here's what you end up with:
http://www.tronguy.net/TRONcostume/portrait.jpg - keene, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2No you would not type that command 75 times. There are such things as wild cards and regular expressions you can use to copy the files in question.
Here is a very simple example.
cp /dir1/filename*200703*.txt /dir2/
In fact, the commands you have access to via a linux/unix environment grant the admin a lot of flexibility and automation compared to using a GUI. - cgibbo, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Then don't use Linux. If you're not willing to learn, you don't deserve it.
- mhearne, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2That just ruined the movie for me. And Tron was pretty much the original computer adventure.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2I am proving you wrong by Digging down your comment about what people who use Linux Digg.
- jurvusbob, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2I actually found it pretty useful
- habbofresh, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1wow, that's pretty basic, and i was thinking, "what can they possibly cover? navigate the file system, run an executable and pass a few arguments?" well, color me impressed, lol.
tl;dr: that's pretty much all the command line you can learn without scripting. - ianthepetrock, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Servers don't have a gui typically.
- Stroggoth, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1"there is no more intuitive interface than the command line"
Such...utter...b*llsh*t. You sir have no clue what "intuitive interface" means.
Intuitive means knowable by intuition. You know nothing when you first sit in front of a command line interface prompt. By definition, it is anti-intuitive and gnostic. - Stroggoth, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1So what you're saying is - you run Linux, but you run Windows under Linux because after all is said and done, you want the features and programs that Windows offers.
Nice! - SolidSnak, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1hmmm I actually needed something like that
