Interestingly, most Windows related swearing is done by the user. - smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nice touch that "penguin" was included as a swear.
- antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I want more swear words in the kernel help pages!
- jrmcgrath13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This isn't primordial... it's so far back that it's come back around to the future and it won't happen for another eon!
- gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My professor said we'll be swearing like truckers soon enough, and always to prompt the user with the appropriate insult when they generate an error.
- YanSan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg is weird, i posted this 22 days ago and got 17 diggs, and now this person posts this and it gets 600 some diggs and counting, makes no sense
- snowthrower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think they need to stop ***** swearing.
- linuxinit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isn't just ancient... it's archaic... :P
- xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isn't prehistoric... it's primordial.
- MacTechSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isn't archaic... it's prehistoric :) (I like this game!)
- linuxbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can't explain how humans work. They just had luck this time.
- zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1find . *.c *.h *.s -exec grep -s "*****" {} ;
- bradhannahb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is by far one of the nerdiest compilations I have ever seen. Somebody actually had to download, extract and gather all that information, then graph it. That is hardcore.
- greatdevourer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2:p I remember the C tut I did. It said:
If you want to have some fun
and look at some real comments, get the Linux source code, go to the src directory and type:
grep –R ***** *.c
It will show how many lines of Linux source include the word “***** (literally hundreds). Here are some highlights from the 2.6 kernel:
arch/sparc/kernel/sunos_ioctl.c: /* Binary compatibility is good American knowhow *****' up. */
arch/mips/kernel/irixioctl.c: * irixioctl.c: A ***** mess...
arch/sparc64/kernel/traps.c: /* Why the ***** did they have to change this? */
drivers/char/watchdog/shwdt.c: * brain-damage, it's managed to ***** things up one step further..
drivers/ide/pci/cmd640.c: * These chips are basically ***** by design, and getting this driver - fozzcorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Digg is weird, i posted this 22 days ago and got 17 diggs, and now this person posts this and it gets 600 some diggs and counting, makes no sense"
I think thats because this one actually made it to the front page. Which is what the majority of casual viewers look at. - ElGringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lol, someone should give an example of when the word "penguin" is used.
- Polaris75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should have also graphed "kludge" ...
- sfacets, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1It's because I am cooler.
- aetherane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why isn't windows in that list of swears?
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Penguin you and all you fish eating friends!
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Watch your penguin language
- kosibar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here are a few:
* An important part of any Linux bring up is the penguin and there's
* Get 'that_penguin' onto the screen in the upper right corner
* penguin is 64 x 74 pixels, align against right edge of screen
* Copyright (C) 2001 by Stanislav Brabec - latova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2WHAT THE PENGUIN DO YOU MEAN???
- shack95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny how the s* levels increased with the 2.4 and 2.6 releases :)
- Codom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is nice to know that the amount of ***** in the kernel has decreased over time.
- Godspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think it would be off the chart or you would need a massive chart
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha. That's awesome.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah, hehe.. i remember this.. i think it was featured in wired magazine once. thats great someone took the time to sort this out and graph it. if i had to work on kernel code i would probably swear a lot more than that! ;P
- zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If you want cleaner code why not use one of the BSDs?"
I think there was a guy who switched from Linux to BSD because of a comment in the kernel. It said somewhere something like "should this really be here?", however little did he know that the same comment appeared in BSD kernel lol,lol - zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can someome tell me how the graph was generated on that site?
using what library or language cuz i have seen the same design in many places. - anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0"I doubt there is any cursing in Microsoft's code. The employees at Microsoft or any employee for that matter have to mantain a certain level of professionalism. I don't think things like this would fly. It's only a matter of time before the linux kernel is cleaned up (not that I don't get a kick out of it). PS it's much more fun to go through the src yourself (with grep) and read the context."
If you want a cleaner code why not use one of the BSDs? - zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How do u know if windoze code has no profanity? you can't see the code lol, one reason why ms wouldnt release the code is cuz it would take them years and billions of dollars to clean up the profanity in the comments, lol
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lol ^^
- quackdoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Someone obvisously didnt see the words..

- outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^^^^
hahahahaha, now theres a thought. - nwagers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I doubt there is any cursing in Microsoft's code. - sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it would be interesting to see this broken down by module.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this ***** rocks
- Phineas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I hadn't seen it before but judging from how often my own programming comments include curses - I completely believe it.
- ryanwarren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks for the two graphs. Real good stuff! Real informative.
- coolfrood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linux_Kernel_Swear_Count No digg for you
- Guti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0hah that's nice :).
- Kenotic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Someone needs to do this with funny comments in the kernel source.
- chicagospur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Swearing is nothing. Check out the "Hot Coffee" Linux Distro...
- wzzrd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This is not old. It's ancient ;)
