- c4mden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44it has way more than simply linux support. for one thing, you can have it save all of the metadata into a sql database. for those of us who like our relational databases, this is huge. i can write my own custom queries to find out crazy stuff about my music collection... or develop insane playlists (i want all files over 5 megabytes in size, at least 192 bit rate, that i haven't listened to in over 15 months.... etc, etc)
amarok also syncs with last.fm very well. not only does it upload song data as i play it, but it will suggest other artists related to an artist based on last.fm data. you can also seed a playlist with a handful of songs, and then let it build out a full playlist using your own song database and last.fm data.
throw in seamless ipod syncing, cover art downloading, wikipedia integration for artist information, and you'll see that it's just totally badass. it does every single thing i wanted (well, except for good shoutcast broadcasting, but it looks like that is finally resolved!) for those of you waiting for it to come to windows, it should be soon. - hockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35it runs on linux for starters.
- towca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32Linux support is NOT it's only advantage. Amarok is a fantastic software when compared to ANY music library software out there. Comparing Amarok with Windows MP, WinAMP, songbird is foolish. It has a LOT more features, is a better handler of your collection and is WAY faster. I tired Itunes for a few days as well. But it couldn't match the speed of amarok. Not by a long shot.
Digg me down, but I think most of you will agree when it is available in windows and mac.
EDIT: Should really refresh before posting. c4mden has a way better response :p - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17It has a nicer interface and more features than any of the media players you mentioned.
- BigBadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I didn't find exaile nearly as nice to use, (and look at), as Amarok. I've tried them all, and found Amarok to be the best, as I'm sure many others have too, thus its growing popularity.
- Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Windows and Mac support will be a big plus. There's a plethora of media player for both those platforms, but nothing comparable. For those of us that use all of the big 3 operating systems, it would be nice to have at least one solid and consistent app that we can use everyday cross-platform (other than Firefox)...
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Of course it's awesome. It's Amarok, everyone's favorite music player. If it's not your favorite you haven't tried it yet.
Like heroin. - c4mden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13runs under gnome just fine.
- EllaTheCat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I love the way Amarok builds without any warnings. It just oozes quality.
- ffxr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13im really looking forward to trying out the new revision of Amarok.. the definitive media player.. many, many thanks to the developers for their hard work in bringing this excellent product to my desktop..
- Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I know it's good, but Amarok was one of the things that I used to bring many people to Linux because it was Linux only.
"With Windows support, I don't need to switch."
But, my reasons are selfish. Amarok should grow. - darweth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Amarok! The King grows stronger.
- Narishma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Direct link to the announcement : http://amarok.kde.org/content/view/10/66/
- shinda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9When I first jumped to linux, I was a little weary of having to leave Winamp behind, but once I found Amarok, I never really looked back. Probably one of the most polished programs out for linux right now.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@AICKieran
Or just
sudo apt-get install amarok
And then you get just what you need to run Amarok. - Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well it's better than rhythmbox :P
I guess it depends on personal taste, just making people aware! - markey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Well, Konversation is a very good IRC client for KDE.
http://konversation.kde.org - fatalfuj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The reason I run Linux.
UPDATED! - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I love amarok.
- adioe3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8May Amarok live in prosperity. Off I go to get this wonder of software.
- toasterwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed. The Qt 4.0 version will be exciting, since it can be ported to Windows. All my friends hate iTunes and this just might be what they're looking for.
- stupidbrowner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Linux support...
- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@malachai
If you introduce them to Amarok on Windows, and they decide to switch, having an application that looks the same and behaves the same is very encouraging when migrating. If anything, I think this is a boost for linux. - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@geoken
Yes.
In general, the answer with amarok is likely to be yes, if what you're asking about is something good. :-) - vmlemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's great, I installed it last night. Remember, grab a spade and get Digging! ;)
- sawser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Awesome!
- Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5geoken:
In 1.4.4, you could go into Preferences > Configure Amarok > and check "Use Ratings" to use ratings. I don't know if things have changed, though. By default, mine used a different scoring method, which I preferred. - stokedfish, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10compiling right now...
- LightsOut06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4konversation > xchat in everyway
lol @ it not supporting scripting. I'm using several self-made scripts written in C++, python, etc. as we speak. - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's really slow and bloated.
- vmlemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Remember that this version has Full Linux Support ;) Of course, it also runs on Mac OS X with the right stuff, and series 2.x may feature Windows support.
- Jaq524, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Isn't that what beta's for...?
- AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Cbeck527:
Why do that? thats just bloat, you only need the core libs, which are all in a package called kdelibs on debian/ubuntu.
sudo apt-get install kdelibs
Job done. - markey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3More detailed article about the new features:
http://ljubomir.simin.googlepages.com/awnissue6 - Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8For gnome there's a brilliant music player on the rise: Exaile.
Small, lightweight (but featureful sp?), has a style similar to Amarok (but just.... nicer!). Don't get me wrong, when I'm in KDE, it's Amarok, but in Gnome, Exaile's the way to go.
And no, I am not affiliated in any way, I just use it, like it and think it needs the word of mouth! - upasaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, you can do a 'apt-get install kubuntu-desktop' to get all the kde stuff installed, but you will have some gnome things left over, but if you want KDE quickly, this is the way to go. Removing all the gnome stuff can be done, but not easily, i would post on ubuntuforums if i were you...
Also, if you like gnome, you can try "listen" which i really like when im in a gnome environment...
http://www.listen-project.org/index.php?nom_page=home - Venky80, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I am wondering I am running fiesty fawn GNOME and i want to run KDE how can i totally migrate to KDE and delete all the GTK stuff. Is it possible? I mean as if I have just KDE no gnome remanence in my system.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Songbird is a system hog. Gecko is a known system hog, and that's fine, but it's the last thing I need with incidental software like a music player.
I've been hanging for Amarok in windows for ages, to me it is the only true killer linux app. (Coming from a dedicated foobar2k user). - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Any one know if this fixes the bug in gnome were id doesn't open in the icon tray? aether way Amarok is the best music management software out there.
- greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nice! the Gentoo ebuild added IUSE="daap"! yay!
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I hope that, when they release the Windows version, I won't have to compile it myself.
- chadian22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I fell in love with this media player and it's different take on music playback and organization than iTunes.
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2*waits patiently for compiling to be done*
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amarok will never be a factor pulling people to linux until they've actually had a taste of it on their current platform.
Besides, OS-agnosticism is the moral high ground, and as a person who uses several OSes, my respect for projects that camp on their OS of choice as a matter of principle are losing more of my respect every day...and I'm not about to use software that won't go where I go. It's no use to me then. - greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3deleting all the GTK stuff is inadvisable. you could do it, certainly, but eventually you'll want to use something that depends on GTK and there is no QT/KDE equivalent. (X-Chat is a good example. i have yet to find a KDE/QT equivalent.)
- reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It stopped crashing for me a while back. I'm not sure exactly what fixed it but some update or another made it work just fine.
- mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It launches whatever is the default mailing application for KDE.
- mattyp1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amarok is simply the best "player" out there. I am a die-hard linux fan and while I am not thrilled about Windows I am happy to see OSX support is coming. One thing I would love to see (that probably will never happen :( ) is itunes playback support, maybe even purchasing. I know, I know, before you judge here me out... I, like most people, work for a corporation that uses Windows for 99% of it's desktops. Well I was recently in Taipei on business and was not able to watch 24 due to the time change. Luckily I found I could purchase/download 24 from itunes, which I did. When I returned from Taiwan two weeks later I was angered to find that there is no way to play back my purchases in Linux. Eventually itunes 7 will work with wine but I would much rather use a native linux program, what better app than Amarok?
Guess I'll keep dreaming and use itunes through vmware... - HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"the 2.0 release (perhaps as soon as this summer) will run natively on Linux, OS X and Windows!"
I just fell in love. - sploit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alright, yet another great amaroK release, thank you all developers ;-) a big thumbs up !
