- smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39I never thought I'd say this about a single linux app , but this program is worth switching to linux. Now feel the burn Windows users as there is no port for you!
- spin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Amen to that! I switched to linux full time about 1.5 years ago and this application and Quanta(text editor) made that possible. I said good riddence to Winamp and DW and things have been golden ever since!
best of all, since version 1.4 of amarok, I haven't had to use that ***** Itunes to put music on my iPod! So, Props to the amarok crew! They have created the best audio player ever. - dubbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"Now feel the burn Windows users as there is no port for you!"
Of course there is nothing stopping anyone from making a port! Gotta love open source.
Amarok is one of my favorite programs as well, I'm a gnome user but have the kde libs installed just to use this program. Two thumbs up. - tikal26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I just think its amazing the pace in which they release Amarok, I am looking foward to Amarok 2.0
- tecnovm65, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16great :D
amarok is the best msuic player ever! - Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@ smiley2billion

Actually, when KDE 4.0 rolls around, a lot of KDE applications will be ported to Windows, such as KOffice, Kontact and Konqueror. Amarok might also be ported, I've heard the developers talk about it.
Some people say that this might encourage people to just stay on Windows, but I tend to disagree, because if you as a Windows user could use KDE 4.0 on Linux and have all the applications stick very closely together, integrate to be even cooler, with 3D effects and all kinds of stuff, plus be rid of all the security issues, I think that might be a quite attractive option, especially if you don't use a PC for gaming, but are a console gamer, like myself, who is gonna buy a Wii or Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. - didacrew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Kicks itunes and windows media player ( for playing music), ass really bad. Amarok is the best thing produced since sliced bread. Cannot wait for amarok 2.0.
- c4mden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6again, i will repeat what so many others have said: amaroK is the single best music player. period. i am still blown away by its features. it's like winamp could have been, had it not stopped cold years ago. itunes is very nice, but locked down in that appley "don't look under the hood" sort of way.
amaroK stores all your data to a database (mine is in mysql), so i can always write a script or whatever to pull out inane playlists (give me all songs rated 4 or more that i haven't listened to in the last 17 months that contain the word 'love' in the title or lyrics) it's well integrated into last.fm, so that it even pulls up suggested tracks based on what you're playing. if i'm listening to radiohead, it might recommend sigur ros. it even italicizes the bands i don't have in my collection, so i might know to check them out.
it's just so very slick. once i get milkdrop running smoothly, and shoutcast broadcasting, i'm set.
single. best. linux. app. - eean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We plan on world domination, so bending Windows to our will is a must.
- azathothx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6oooh... yummy :)
- Shardz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Best.... Music... Player... Out... There...
- bhalo05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you have any suggestions in how to organize the immense amount of features amaroK provides, I'm sure the developers will be glad to hear them.
As for me, and unlike some KDE programs that really would need an UI overhaul as soon as possible, I think amaroK devs have done an impressive job with the interface. They really care about quality, and it shows everywhere, IMHO. - bhalo05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6A new version of the best player ever is always great news. Thank you, Amarok developers!
- diegocg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"I think it's a bad idea to port killer apps to MS Windows, because they are the reason why users want to switch."
You may be right, or not - but the fact is that open source is about freedom, so if people feels like the should port amarok to windows, they'll do it: And IMO, users' exercising their freedom will ultimately revert into linux (FOSS, GNU) benefit - ericthefish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Upgrade (k)ubuntu:
http://kubuntu.org/announcements/amarok-1.4.3.php - praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i was on suse and using amarok. then i got fed up of linux. then i looked at winamp and wmp. then i switched back to Suse just for amarok
- ChaseVenters, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Nah, they just need to port all the useful Windows apps to Linux. :)
You'll probably get your wish at some point though, because one of the aims of KDE4 is Windows portability, and I assume Amarok (even though it is extragear) would follow. - thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you add these lines to your Firefox config through about:config, you can tell Firefox to send those links to Amarok:
network.protocol-handler.app.lastfm as a string equaling the location of your Amarok binary
and
network.protocol-handler.external.lastfm as a boolean set to true - duhblow7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"There is as much chance of any of the current dev’s porting to windows as there is copyrighted music download becoming free. I’ll do it if it does. So, stop harrasing us - it’s not going to happen for a while."
This is a (old) quote from KDE developers on the amarok KDE blog: http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/41-porting-amaroK-to-windows.html - Hydrogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4>amaroK stores all your data to a database (mine is in mysql), so i can always write a >script or whatever to pull out inane playlists (give me all songs rated 4 or more that i >haven't listened to in the last 17 months that contain the word 'love' in the title or lyrics)
You can do all that with smart playlists, you don't even need to play around with the database directly
>if i'm listening to radiohead, it might recommend sigur ros. it even italicizes the bands >i don't have in my collection, so i might know to check them out.
You can also listen to lastfm:/ streams directly from Amarok! - smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can customize nearly everything in amarok, just right click and go. You can even kick out the "mini" player if need be (looks like old school winamp).
- richlv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4if you have problems, you can always get help on irc, forums or mailing list :)
- nopox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Best player!
- dajs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i love it!
the features are just amazing - dukeinlondon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it just me or this news has not made it to the front page despite the diggs ? There are older stories with less diggs on the front page...
- thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Aderman
Konqueror is great as a file manager and FTP client. The whole browser thing, though, I agree with you about.
@smily2billion
When I first switched to Linux, Amarok actually WAS the application that made me spend more time in Linux, and essentially inspired my permanent switch. - scullder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think it's a bad idea to port killer apps to MS Windows, because they are the reason why users want to switch.
IMHO, only apps which can help to adopt new file formats or to anticipate a switch to a Free OS and desktop should be ported to MS Windows. - bcmm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I think it's a bad idea to port killer apps to MS Windows, because they are the reason why users want to switch."
FWIW, I was already using OpenOffice, Gaim, and of course Firefox at the time I switched to Linux, and they were part of my reason to switch. - PlayWithFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i've installed Ubuntu a week ago, but can't seem to use it as much as i'd like
just looking at the screens of Amarok alone, makes me really want to try it - jrepin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah it looks like there is a bug on the digg.com. You can't even find this story if you do a search on Amarok. I guess we should all report a bug here:
http://digg.com/bugreport - richlv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well, qt4 being gpl on windows will help, but there still are things that are quite os-specific - like engines, for example. so, unless some windows devs come over to code the support, windows port not going to happen from itself.
and maybe that's better, we get the elitist feeling, something to motivate people moving away from windows - and easier support in irc. no need to ask for the operating system =) - scullder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You need to switch to gnu/linux fully :p
- eean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@thepxc
Mplayer doesn't provide much of a library interface.
The Amarok on Windows would use the Windows media libraries. - pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you want video, use VLC, or better yet Democracy Player to organize all of your internet television. http://www.getdemocracy.com/
I don't mind having two separate programs, especially when each is so good at what they do. The closest I have come to finding Amarok in Windows is Foobar 2000 which requires a little bit of work to add the features you want. - slackerbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Pretty cool. I've never really been a fan of KDE - always been more of a Gnome and XFCE guy - but Amarok is the only KDE app I've been pretty fond of... though at times it just eems like pure overkill.
- shockme17, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4this needs to be ported to windows immediately
- dukeinlondon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I noticed that as well. I'll report the bug.
- colingooch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gimp and Gaim both use GTK not QT - Basically GTK is used by Gnome and QT is used KDE.
Trolltech, the compny that develops QT, have always made it available to Linux under GPL, but not on Windows. With version 4 they changed this license so that it will be GPL on windows too.
Amarok devs have stated that once KDE4 is released that they will be happy to support a Windows port, so that should be good news for some, tho' does take away yet another reason to switch to Linux if you're still stuck in Windows hell. - eean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Somehow our storied got buried - if you extend the search to buried stories Amarok comes up. I wonder why that happened.
- modafokaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the one to think that Foobar is more interesting than Amarok?
Don't get me wrong, seeing Amarok run was one of the things that made get my act together and finally install Linux after having pushed it off for a while, so I do enjoy it very much.
But some things in Amarok just annoy me..
Can't the playlist part be more customisable? isn't there a proper script to shutdown your computer using Ubuntu (and therefore, not KDE)? why can't I have multiple playlists? why can't I tag my songs using freedb? and why do all my tags show up cut off in amarok?
small things, but it makes me feel like Amarok is a vamped up version of iTunes, and a one that kicks the crap out of iTunes too of course, and that Foobar is still a more versatile tool and fun geek-toy.. - justcallmejim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hate to say it but it's only the best music player only for audio formats. Granted it is the best audio player around, but I'm not satisfied with just that. I want something that plays ALL my media under the same roof with content rating abilities, common queue functions, media library and kick ass visualization for audio tracks. And I want it all in the same window and optionally in a separate windows.
- thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@richtv
I don't pretend to be an expert on these things, but if Amarok could be made to use MPlayer as a backend, it could also use MPlayer as an engine on Windows. - rynop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amarok is SICK. Best app. I have used in years. Dynamic playlists are awesome.
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think its a bad idea. It will make windows people stay. People who like windows stay because of the games. People who like linux one of the reasons is the great apps. Without needing linux for the apps...
- eean, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I kind of want video playback, just so that I can watch the Ctrl-Alt-Chicken podcast. :)
So it might happen, but it will never be a focus of Amarok. Likely it won't happen in 2.0.0, there's plenty of other work to be done for that release! - kendals, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So how do you upgrade easily in Ubuntu?
- trashlikeyou, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5My fingers are crossed that it will include video playback as well.
- pussfeller, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Yea I want video support. Its the logical next step.
I understand it could be a pain tho, cause AFAIK there is no taglib type thingee for video, altho, mythtv and freevo have some libraries for that sort of thing.
It would be awesome! - vondur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I like Ubuntu and Linux in general, but Amarok has the really bad UI that seems to be the Hallmark of KDE. I do think it has some cool capabilities, I just wish it did not have such a cluttered UI.
- shockme17, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i just thought since gimp and gaim have been ported, that this could be ported too
