- macijuana, on 10/10/2007, -6/+60Adobe, where is flash player for PPC linux?!?
- Gman1223, on 10/10/2007, -8/+61Adobe, where is photoshop for linux?
- ruiacp, on 10/10/2007, -9/+61Adobe! Where is the "any-bit" shockwave player for Linux?
- moosepile, on 10/10/2007, -6/+53Adobe (tm), where is the Flash (tm) Player for *BSD?
- NoTiG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35I just wish the 32bit version wasn't so buggy
- duhblow7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30How about a flash player for linux that doesn't use up more than 50% CPU because I have a Firefox tab open with a SWF file embedded somewhere?
- nodowntime, on 11/03/2007, -12/+35Adobe! Where are the WMDs in Iraq?
- Barleyman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24What about wmode="transparent" bug fix for the current linux flash plugin? Maybe then I could read the menu on your own site ->http://www.adobe.com/
- geoken, on 10/10/2007, -12/+34Adobe, where's Wlado in this pic http://technology360.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/waldo.jpg
- dannyb37, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19true, but free isn't the only reason to use linux.
- CurtHowland, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20When I discovered that the flash plug-in and Google Earth didn't run in 64bits, that's when I decided that my brand-spanking-new laptop was, sadly, going to be running in 32bit mode for its first few years.
This is what you get with proprietary code. Abandon Flash all ye who enter F/OSS! - kinghajj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Cons? 64-bit software runs much better IMHO. When I got my new Dell laptop it came with a 32-bit version of Vista. I formatted & installed the 64-bit version, and it runs much better.
Also, most consumer processors made now are 64-bit processors. The OEMs need to get with the program and start including 64-bit OSes. - oneoverzero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Behind the guy in the green sleeveless sweater and the woman in pink.
- KWhat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I remember there being a post about how a 64bit port is not feasible at the moment due to the extensive amount of assembly optimizations in the flash virtual machine. I believe the post was "its not as simple as fixing some int pointers."
- corrosion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Too many platforms. They must open it.
- pHr34kY, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Until there is a decent software-base for 64-bit, nobody will upgrade to a 64bit OS. There are PLENTY of 64bit machines out there. I installed both Windows XP 64bit Ubuntu amd64 on machines before, and the ONLY headache I got was when I had to install a 32-bit browser JUST to get get flash/java plugins working.
Apart from that, the whole thing is ready to go, and everyone is just waiting on Adobe.
Oh, and same goes for Adobe Reader - Port it so x64 already!!! - webNV, on 11/03/2007, -1/+12Adobe! Where is the Flash player source code?
- stmiller, on 10/10/2007, -9/+20Here:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/
Flash 7 compatible, and plays back youtube and other video content. - FalconEnigma, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Even though they don't have a specific 64 bit plugin, there is a plugin that will allow you to use the normal 32 bit version of flash and install it into 64 bit Firefox...works seemless. http://freshmeat.net/projects/nspluginwrapper search ubuntuforums for a more indepth tutorial...I can say for a fact that it works perfectly in RHEL4 RHEL5 and Fedora.
- mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yup! Mozilla Corp. fixed it on their end, but Adobe has yet to address it.
- sq377, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12That has to be one of the funniest posts i've ever read... there is no such thing as optimized flash
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Is it hard to understand that reverse engineering a closed specification takes time, and that this means that they will lag somewhat? I'm impressed that they actually got this far.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Sure, write a virtual machine on top of another virtual machine! Thats a great idea.
( Note, that was sarcasm, and no you don't have any idea what you are talking about, otherwise you would realize its absurdity ) - chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Adobe, Where the ***** did I leave my keys?
- jasorn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Adobe, where is the stable 32 bit version for linux? I'm not a hater. I think developers should put out software for whatever platforms they want.
- zephyrxero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Exactly, it's not just Linux...it's all operating systems, there is no 64-bit flash for any OS currently. The person who wrote this article links to Penguin.swf blog, but has obviously never read the post about this many many months ago.
- Rileyper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Eww, did waldo have a sex change
- jcronkhite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I agree, but man it's tough. We want to use LInux and enjoy things as simple as tuning into Hereos in HD this fall online at NBC, but we can't. YouTube, and like services are where the web is now, so we want Flash 64 to avoid nerfing our systems from 64 to 32 bit. Maybe Adobe needs to open source playback codecs or something. Make the authoring software (Flash) a pay/closed source product, but make the player version free and open so we can all enjoy this stuff. What a bummer. Like most Linux users, I'm fighting through this on 64bit. I don't want to switch back to 32bit.
- Gman1223, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Anyone who feeds this troll will die /sheeny curse
- theghoul, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Adobe, the flash player wont load on my Amiga.
- jbus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Even though Microsoft® has been plotting Flash's death with Silverlight™, Adobe is still being the good little bitch and helping protect Microsoft's image and monopoly by making sure no other OS gets a damn 64bit browser plug-in before Windows does. Unfortunately, the adoption of 64bit Windows is so slow that it may be years before Adobe sees fit to make 64bit Flash for any OS. But who knows? Maybe by then Flash will be a thing of the past and we will all just have to suffer being shut out of the inevitable "Silverlight™ only" sites that will be popping up all over the place.
Message to Adobe: In case you haven't noticed, Microsoft doesn't need your help to dominate the industry. How about Adobe start looking after Adobe's interests instead. Hint, hint... World wide, this Linux thing is really starting to catch on. Might want to pay it a bit more attention. - m0bilitee, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It works perfectly...for a while. Then you have to rediscover your plugins to get it to come back. Sometimes. Then you need to restart Firefox. Sometimes that works. Then sometimes you have to rediscover your plugins.
- samadam, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10And where is shockwave for intel mac?
- natenovs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8do you know what you're talking about?
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I use Linux because I like it, not (only) because it is free. Regardless of what you might think, it is not a "cheap version of Windows".
- mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7nspluginwrapper is very unstable for me. I am forced to use 32-bit Firefox on my 64-bit Linux machine.
- MasteRR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+650% CPU usage wouldn't bother me if it actually ran without crashing.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Adobe is an old-school software company -- they're slow to adapt.
- BladeMelbourne, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Ubuntu is *****?
My PPC Mac Mini is Redundant? No. Obsolete? Not quite yet.
The Mac Mini is wonderful piece of hardware - small, quiet and low power consumption. It's a shame I bought before the Intel transition was announced.
By the way, the PS3 is using PPC chips. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Challenging, he was right in the middle of the picture.
"Man, he's just not trying anymore" - kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5mikemx: You're a god damn idiot. I use G3 class hardware and it's still in good shape. It is now 8 years old and still running well. Obviously if my G3 hardware runs well, G4 and above will work very well indeed under linux.
Besides, PPC > x86 - AICkieran, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Hi there Ballmer, how's it going? Didn't know you were on digg.
- dannyb37, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7ok so you, a obviously none linux interested person came all the way on to the linux article, for what? to bash linux users, or do you just like to watch us suffer without our 64bit flash player?
- Lodarage, on 11/03/2007, -2/+7Adobe! Where is the 8-bit Flash player for my good old Commodore 64?
- MasteRR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Hey, I think that the PPC Linux users would like to have a word with you. They don't like not being called the smaller minority.
- smacksaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I want to know why my 32-bit Firefox on AMD64 Kubuntu stops when I scroll down with arrow keys. Whenever my pointer touches something that's Flash, I have to move the pointer. With Digg, it's like an old 1970's driving game.
- kettlechips, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The Warrant!
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I've paid more money for Linux games than a lot of Windows users do for any kind of software. Most people run pirated Windows, pirated office etc.
I'm actually using my OS and some applications legally, and paying for some of it -
