- Kingoftherings, on 06/04/2008, -5/+141The Year of Linux on the Desktop? No, the Year of Linux on the laptop. :P
- schestowitz, on 06/04/2008, -4/+122They also slammed Vista last year. The CEO of Acer said that "the entire industry is disappointed with Vista".
Acer has no choice. - inactive, on 06/04/2008, -2/+119Good to see a little more momentum being taken away from Windows.
This kind of competition is exactly what Microsoft needs. - picsectionpleez, on 06/04/2008, -3/+90Way to go Acer. I know what brand I'll be buying when I'm ready for a new laptop. We thank you for endorsing Linux!
- williamson389, on 06/05/2008, -2/+50i bought a acer and ended up installing linux on it because it couldnt handle vista.
- gutistg, on 06/05/2008, -0/+43I think Digg uses Debian on it's servers, so everyone is.
- JoemcC00L, on 06/05/2008, -2/+36I ran linux on my Acer Travelmate 4150. It simply ran better than Windows. Faster, better power management, and the coolest interface (Compiz Fusion) on the market today. This is a good decision for them.
- carpespasm, on 06/05/2008, -3/+30good, their ceo was honest. Compared to the wonders that Microsoft offered as the feature and design list for longhorn, Vista seems like they just slapped more lipstick on XP and kicked it out of the car.
- Jexie, on 06/05/2008, -3/+30I would bet it was Vista that couldn't handle the Acer.
- BigManOnCampus, on 06/04/2008, -3/+29The question is, will they try to compete, or will they just try to muscle their way back to domination?
- skidooer, on 06/05/2008, -0/+26Shh. You're not supposed to mention the server market. The desktop market is the only place operating systems exist as far as the Windows fanboys are concerned.
- YodaJones, on 06/05/2008, -1/+25Linux rocks! We are already moving corporate customers to Linux with virtual machines running XP for any vertical applications a client may have until open source programs are implemented. Additionally Linux servers are much more stable no matter what Microsoft says.
- peterjmag, on 06/04/2008, -2/+24You don't matter.
- firebirdx01, on 06/05/2008, -0/+21Dugg for promoting Linux.
- FreakyPhil31, on 06/05/2008, -1/+21I for one welcome our penguin overlords.
- mrsteveman1, on 06/05/2008, -2/+21Thats what happens, when the mainstream OS is being shunned, hardware manufacturers would like to have something else to sell.
Apple won't let anyone sell OS X boxes, so Linux is the only real option.
I hope this sort of thing is the start of lots of competition for Windows, everything will improve if thats the case. - isuisorisuaint, on 06/05/2008, -1/+19i just started as a unix sa this week at the company i've been with for 10 years. it seems like the windows guys are always bitching but my group is happy as *****. we're in R01 of a global SAP implementation and the servers are all running redhat. i'm pretty excited about the future...
- weirdlookinguy, on 06/05/2008, -0/+15Normally I'm a Windows fanboy, but....
If I was Microsoft I'd be scared right now. It's apparent by now that Linux is starting to take off. - iRelinquish, on 06/05/2008, -0/+15(I'm going to kick you in the face using Linux)
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -4/+18well now they have said windows 7 is not built from the ground up but is yet another hack upun vista upon xp upon 2000 upon nt4 etc etc. it might fails from its own bloat.
microsoft has nothing to fall back on like they did when ME failed and they used the NT core. im not sure if anyone can write a new operating system that will do all the things the powerpoint cretins want. - AzureRise, on 06/05/2008, -1/+15I doubt he'll buy it if the specs are *****, but it's good to know that your preferred OS is supported and gives you more incentive to buy from that company.
- shrewduser, on 06/05/2008, -0/+14dell, asus, acer, hp, gigabyte, etc etc et....
cmon, linux is moving very fast and showing just how agile it is taking on new markets without a miss-step, even windows trolls gotta admit it. :) - JebJoya, on 06/05/2008, -0/+12Amusingly, my parents have just bought a new, Acer-branded laptop to replace an old dell with a broken screen that I introduced my mum to Ubuntu on. Even before this new PC, my mum would get annoyed at the time it took the main PC (running XP) to boot up and get going with the things she wanted to do (just email in Outlook and internet on Firefox for the main part to be fair) - she basically refuses to use anything but the broken laptop!
Anyway, my dad saw the Acer laptop and was given an option of Vista or Ubuntu (I didn't even realise they were offering it!), and went for Vista because he thought it would have better compatibility with his Remote Desktop for work (Java & Browser-based thingy). They got the machine yesterday. Within 2 hours my dad was on the phone to me checking how to burn a Ubuntu CD because Vista was already starting to annoy him and my mum. He's even considering not dual booting after he found that his Remote Desktop ran fine (no better or worse) on Ubuntu.
Kudos to Acer for this - the more people that know that Linux (especially Ubuntu as the new "poster-child" to some extent) can be used very easily for most things that the average user wants to do, the better. - mrsteveman1, on 06/05/2008, -1/+13It means that hardware manufacturers can no longer just say "everything is windows, thats all we support, ever"
They now will have to seriously consider supporting Linux because hardware will actually be using it. - shadoweva09, on 06/05/2008, -0/+12At least this might get it enough market share to finally get some damn wireless support. (I swear broadcom must have some agreement with microsoft.) and it "can extend battery life from five to seven hours." really, vista takes up that much power?
- UKsHaDoW, on 06/05/2008, -0/+11Your mom matters to me mmmmmm &heart
- LlamaKing, on 06/05/2008, -0/+11you forgot the 'with linux'
- expert01, on 06/05/2008, -4/+14Looks like the "acer sucks" comments are already coming in. For the more open-minded, you might wish to go off the PC World Magazine 2007 Brand Reliability survey, done by 60,000 of their readers.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,139958-page,10-c ... - Laptops: Apple, Lenovo, Acer.
They don't seem to be on the 2007 Desktop charts, so here's the 2005 desktop chart:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,123409-page,8-c, ... Alienware (now owned by Dell), Apple, eMachines (now owned by Acer), Acer
However, for the 2007 ratings, their eMachines brand is Number 2: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,139958-page,11-c ...
Acer owns the Gateway, eMachines, and Packard Bell brands. They are the third largest Computer manufacturer world wide (in sales). Gateway has 100% US-Based customer service, and eMachines computers have a 1% replacement rate (thank you wikipedia). - ArthurSucks, on 06/05/2008, -0/+10(I'm reading this comment using Linux)
- dopplerdog, on 06/05/2008, -0/+10"Congradulations"?? What the ***** is that??? What sort of ***** SPELLING IS THAT??? It's "CONGRATULATIONS". With a ***** "T". It's from the same ***** root as "gratuitous", and "grateful", and "gratification". Would you say "gradification"? No? Well why say "congradulations"???? If I had a dollar for every time I've seen that word spelled like that I'd be ***** rich by now.
Go on, digg me down to ***** hell. I don't care. If this comment saves one person from making this ***** mistake again, then this comment's mission is done. - tcheard, on 06/05/2008, -0/+10(I'm adding to this thread using Linux)
- crazybrit, on 06/05/2008, -0/+10Cool man.
- manbearpigm16, on 06/05/2008, -3/+13Your mom doesn't matter.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+9*POSIX
- iXneonXi, on 06/05/2008, -2/+11I'm using an Acer Aspire 5315-2153 with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. Linux runs great.
- Fatpizza99, on 06/05/2008, -0/+9ooo linux is gonna get bigger and bigger!
- mrsteveman1, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8Its more complicated than that, broadcom actually does release and support linux drivers, DIRECTLY from their website, for other chipsets they make.
http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/downl ...
And, Broadcom HAS a linux driver for the 43xx series chipsets, linksys boxes have a 43xx core on their system chipsets, and broadcom gave Linksys a driver for it which Linksys and all the firmware clones now use, though its a 2.4.x kernel driver and is stuck at one version i believe.
But the point is, they already developed a driver, they support other chipsets on Linux with fully open, GPL source drivers on their own website, but not 4311 wireless, so the only answer is they are using code they can't legally release. - mrsteveman1, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8In this case, Linux runs on lighter hardware, faster, so its also about efficiency and cost of production, which is important because this is a VERY low end of the market, i mean below $300 is razor thin margins, even the cost of a windows license increases the overall cost by probably %20, which is a LOT.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8(i'm posting this Linux related thread comment that is posted using Linux while using Linux) And beta testing FF3...
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8SO the machine I program web applications on, produce Multimedia on and create small software applications on is nothing more than an "internet browser"?
Ok Buddy enjoy paying another years subscription for Anti Virus. Fifty Bucks!
Does your OS slow down when scanning for Viruses? get rid of the OS! - carrtoonist, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8Because of linux I can now look at cheaper, less powerful laptops and still think that I could get some use out of them.
- Philophobic, on 06/05/2008, -1/+8I've an Acer. Posting this from an Acer. It runs well.
Also, they (somewhat) recently bought Gateway, so it was pretty much a given that they'd do something big sometime. Guess this is it? Finally throwing some weight around. - jellygraph, on 06/05/2008, -0/+7Oooh, Dell and Acer... Which will be my next laptop?
- hadak, on 06/05/2008, -1/+8This is great news, but Acer still makes cheap laptops.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+6"I actually think they should have done something other than turn NT into a consumer OS, they should have kept things separate."
Why? From what I hear, NT is a better kernel... - Frostek, on 06/05/2008, -0/+6Try ordering the special typing wand... You can get it by mashing all the buttons on your phone down.
- Inflammo, on 06/05/2008, -2/+8Good for Acer. Mine came with Vista, and I almost immediately replaced it with XP. Anything but stupid Vista is a step in the right direction
- jellygraph, on 06/05/2008, -0/+6***** all nothing...?
Congradulations?
Evidently your Windows machine does 'f*ck all nothing' as well, as it doesn't even seems to have a basic spell checker in your browser.
Anyhow, I was never nearly as productive until I switched to Linux. So I'm rather curious as to what you define as being able to do 'f*ck all something'... but lets see if your response even makes sense. - earlycj5, on 06/05/2008, -1/+7Great! I just sold an Acer that I ran OpenSUSE and Kubuntu on. It ran well but they used the SiS Graphics, no 3D acceleration. Blech, no Compiz for me.
No problems with it, I just downsized to a HP Mini-note. -
