- wiggsfly, on 02/25/2009, -1/+134That's one of the coolest things I've seen in a while!
- hamobu, on 02/25/2009, -0/+91OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! After more than two years of lurking on the Digg, I finally made the front page.
I would like to thank the little people. It is you that have helped me get here. This is your victory as well as mine.
I would also like everyone to know that if you work hard and believe in yourself than anything is possible. Let my example show you that, no matter the odds against you, dreams really can come true. You to may some day do something monumental such as becoming the president of the USA, wining a Nobel prize, or even - like myself - make it to the front page on Digg.
Keep Believing !!! Thank you. - Birukun, on 02/25/2009, -5/+81Their webserver must be hosted on one...... site is slooooww
- decx, on 02/25/2009, -1/+59i dont know what i should do with it, but it is really cool
smaller gadgets ftw - Nickedynick, on 02/25/2009, -3/+60"And whereas Debian-based Linux distributions have come a long way, they are far from user-friendly."
Have a look first, before making such critical comments.
That said, it's a cool concept - if I wasn't a student I'd be getting one now! - jorisb, on 02/25/2009, -0/+48You could attach a usb harddrive and use it to download torrents, no need to keep your desktop running all night. It would be network attached storage at the same time.
Or maybe you could attach a usb camera and use it for security. Or a mysql server..
I expect this to become something useful. - Birukun, on 02/25/2009, -0/+42This thing is just begging for TorrentFlux!
- Gyre23, on 02/25/2009, -0/+30I preferred the article I saw yesterday on LinuxDevices.com, it's a bit more technical if light on the commentary.
http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS9634061300.html - screensnot, on 02/25/2009, -0/+27Extension cords have been in development for a while. You might even find some on the market soon.
- Flinty, on 02/25/2009, -0/+27wow. This would be great as a file server with the USB... Can you install your own distro on it though?
- DjArcadian, on 02/25/2009, -0/+23Mirror

- smacksaw, on 02/25/2009, -0/+20I guess if I sat crosslegged like that, I'd eventually need a ShivaPlug as well...
The article was pretty good until the person decried the lack of a monitor-out. Yes, because all rackmount servers come with awesome 64-bit GPUs and each one is plugged into it's own individual monitor.
The point of most servers is that they're headless. Duh. If you're using the thing all the time locally where you need video output, get a ***** workstation. - mbtria, on 02/25/2009, -0/+17I have been looking for this for a couple of years. Minimal energy requirements, but a full OS with both Ethernet and USB2. Great price too. And no fan noise. Run all my stuff around the house. 1-wire sensors, weather station, drip irrigation and energy control. Some of this stuff has been running on my wife's laptop, but power consumption is still higher than I would like, and she isn't happy about my running on her box 24/7.
- LiquidSpark, on 02/25/2009, -0/+16RTFA (again). It has a USB port so you can hook up an external drive to it.
- jschrab, on 02/25/2009, -0/+13But can you hack an Airport Express's mini-OS? SSH into it? Hang a USB drive off it and turn it into a NAS?
I have an Airport Express myself and love it but this is something more flexible. - spritom, on 02/25/2009, -0/+13My router needs replacement...maybe one of these with Smoothwall or M0n0wall on it? The pricing is similar.
- Akufen, on 02/25/2009, -0/+13Because...?
Stable software and the ease of aptitude seems like a definite plus for any server to me. - djbon2112, on 02/25/2009, -0/+12I completely disagree with that entire closing paragraph. Give it a web interface on a non-standard port (10000?) for configuration, updates, etc. It can be just as user friendly as WHS. And, SSH for more advanced users. I don't think Linux or Debian is particularity un-user-friendly, it's just different which makes it scary for most new users.
- riddlebox, on 02/25/2009, -1/+13That's what she said.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+12Network storage for backups. USB printer sharing. A podcast client that runs throughout the day. Home automation.
A personal web server. Even if you don't want a "real" website, a web server can be used to host files for posting on other sites, or for running your own wiki for collaborating on group projects.
I wonder. Would a system like this be any help at all for Folding@Home? Serious question. Could it play any part- however small- in the search for a cure to cancer and Alzheimer's? - twoboxen, on 02/25/2009, -1/+12hopefully they didn't host the server on one of those "beasts".
- mgbuddy, on 02/25/2009, -0/+11For what they say, Yes. At last, Ubuntu,Debian,Fedora and Gentoo appear on the docs.
- czarr, on 02/25/2009, -0/+11@orvtech: Linux is a kernel. Ubuntu uses this kernel. Debian is a distribution which also uses this kernel.
- nofx1510, on 02/25/2009, -0/+10This is the type of stories that I miss. Back in the good ol days of digg all you would find were awesome stories and finds like this. If I could digg this story twice I would.
- DrLeePhD, on 02/25/2009, -2/+12"she isn't happy about my running on her box 24/7."
I'll run on her box for a while if you need a break. - centran, on 02/25/2009, -0/+10Here is the website and where you can buy it.
http://www.marvell.com/products/embedded_processor ...
This is getting a lot of press so if their site goes down or the one linked to this article. Just google SheevaPlug. There are a ton of articles about it.
http://www.google.com/search?q=SheevaPlug&ie=u ... - MtheoryX, on 02/25/2009, -0/+10wat?
- RumpleForeskin3, on 02/25/2009, -2/+11It is a little too bright to go outside every once and a while...
- kahrn, on 02/25/2009, -0/+9Perhaps you failed to read the article. Time for you to leave /linux_unix/ now, and go back to /apple where you belong.
- kronzdigg, on 02/25/2009, -4/+13Can't handle digg....
- il2k3, on 02/26/2009, -0/+9This speech was better than the one Obama gave. I salute you.
- MasterQ, on 02/25/2009, -2/+11@orvtech: Ubuntu IS a linux distribution, and it's a branch off Debian (which is also a linux distribution), not a watered down version. What you said is completely wrong.
Under your logic: mandrivia is not linux, its a watered down version of red hat. Suse isn't linux, its a watered down version of slackware. It makes no sense. - DarkPenguin, on 02/25/2009, -0/+9Your router running DDWRT has 512mb ram, 512mb flash, a 1.2ghz processor, a usb port, and consumes ~5w, for $100?
Damn. - revyn, on 02/25/2009, -1/+9*sighs dejectedly*
You can't fix stupid. - MacEnvy, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7You make a good point, gumstix require an external power supply.
- justhim, on 02/25/2009, -1/+8If it had a 'hello kitty' sticker on it, it would be all the rage in Japan.
- Knet88, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7Yeah, oddly enough, it does, but you have a heck of a time getting the Windows and Crysis install CDs in there, not to mention the keyboard and mouse....
- MWeather, on 02/25/2009, -1/+8If by watered down, you mean more up to date, then yes. Ubuntu is just Debian Testing with some polish.
- Zerfram, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7Where can I buy?
- orvtech, on 02/25/2009, -2/+9False!, if the web page is hosted on a fast/light webserver like lighttpd or just httpd from busybox and it is static or dynamic but with CGIs written in C or C++ it should be fast enough, this is not new take for example the NSLU2 it is only 133MHz and with 32Mb of ram is able to run a fully functional web web server, tale a look at http://www.linuxevolution.org which is running on one of those.
Im not saying that you will be able to have a successful site like digg.com on it with lots of traffic but it will handle around 8k hits per day with no problems. besides... if you get more hits like that you should be making money out of it... enought to get a real server hosted at a data center.
Personally i think it is a great device in general - hamobu, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7You don't need 512 MB for an OS on such a limited device. Base Ubuntu server needs 500 MB (for X86), and I imagine that has support for all kinds of hardware, file systems, etc. that you would not be using.
- Phases78, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7That's tighter than tight.
- t3hbagel, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6Get an external RAID enclosure, plug it into the USB port.
- MWeather, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6No token ring either.
- compsciguy, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7i am right now ... its hard to read digg using lynx :P
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6Or you could just run tcpdump over SSH. Not as pretty, but still functional.
Btw, it's Wireshark now, not Ethereal. - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6I wasn't talking about using it just for one single purpose. I was talking about a device dedicated for doing some combination of these 24/7 type tasks.
I do these tasks now with an 800MHz PIII Dell tower (running Debian Lenny) that my neighbor gave me for free, but a computer like this would use much less power. - TenaciousG86, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6That's not the point...the point is that you can set up a media server in two seconds for only $99...and about the power usage, a USB2 storage drive wouldn't even be using as much power as a small server...
- tedc, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6Cool concept! I only wish they'd squeezed an extra ethernet in there to give it firewall capability.
