- mucnix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+47I plan on breaking X as soon as I get home!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+39Things and change so fast.
NVidia i am holding my breath. Please don't disappoint me. - oliveroms, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20It's finally out, whoot whoot! *happy dance* and all that!
Let's hope that things are really that great as AMD/ATi promised (inc. some bugs of course, no body is perfect afterall) - burty89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Be fair: this driver is mainly aimed at the newer cards that have previously been unsupported. Also, the xpress200/200m/rs480 isn't very fast anyway, even in windows... I only hope that xorg developers having access to ati developers will help resolve the texture issue thats keeping the 200m from running compiz with the open driver.
- puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18hey finally! I just need to test this as fast as I can!
It's still hard to believe all that performance gains... I mean.. after so many frustations with ATI cards on linux.. - ekso, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Too late. I'm already using nVidia because of the Linux drivers.
But this makes me happy. I will have more choices again when I update my graphics card. :) - sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I am in the same boat, but for the first time in about 2 years I am actually considering buying ATI again...
- mournsanity, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16I dream of the day when my Xpress 200M will have proper driver support... :(
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11oh noes!
At least it isn't like the windows catalyst driver which has a sasquatch footprint. - downlo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13*****! I was running 8.35.5 from portage and the memory footprint doubled
8.35.5: 765252
8.41.7: 1652636
However, I need to do e17setroot to get a transparent term; under the 8.35 it would take a couple of seconds for the root wallpaper to be set, not its almost instantaneous.
My faith in ATI/AMD has made a significant jump. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9o noes, a whole MEGABYTE missing. what am i going to do. my new version of TETRIS, will it run?
i may have to get back to DOS 5.22 (6 was *****) - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9'Literature' included... http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NjA1Mw
- JDZitro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8What about my 9200? :'(
Guess I am forced to upgrade. - theotherme, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12very slow on my system (xpress200)
- davidlin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7See the comments @ http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5193
Still lots of problems, but this release is JUST designed for the R600 series. So users from past generations are complaining about problems AMD knows is not fixed. - superyounan1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6its only for r500 and r600 right now, if you have lower (like me) we're supposed to wait til next month. Do not install it if the ati website doesn't still shows 8.40 for your card
- MarkKezner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Waiting for beryl and compiz support to arrive in version 8.42. Until then this is an exercise in frustration (for me)
- Muncher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's working fantastic here, on my X1900 XT.
- Uchikoma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This driver is only really good for HD2x00 series. (R600). For some non R600 cards, it breaks X, and you can't get into graphical. Best to wait for the 8.42 release before giving them a spin (as next release should be unified).
Not like we haven't waited years, and years for this anyways. One more month isn't going to kill us. - jamesey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7wheres the all-in-wonder support dammit!?
- mtekk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Um, this driver isn't the one causing the majority of the problems, well actually the lack of AIGLX is the problem, but besides that XGL just flat out sucks, and that's what causes the problems with Compiz.
- phlegm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8No good for me. Buggy and slow. That said it's the first release of a completely new driver. I'm sure it will get better. In the meanwhile I'm back to the previous one.
- panfist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Does anybody have an email address to contact AMD/ATI ? I would like to thank them for finally reaching out to Linux users, and show my support for them. I looked briefly on their website, and I'd really rather not send a snail mail...
- captcanuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If by problem you mean google-earth wasn't launching, then yes.
- cdawzrd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7too bad i JUST switched from an x800 to a 7900gs because of ati's crappy linux support
- cynicist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5too bad for you open source drivers will be available next year
- wafflez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5any benchmarks against nvidias cards now?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Its good to see ATI/AMD getting their act together for Linux. I hope they continue on this new road to win back our hearts and wallets.
- panfist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4ATI support recommended the 2400 Pro for Oblivion? Either that rep had his head up his ass, or you have your head up yours. The 2400 / 2600 are basically HTPC cards. You won't get good gaming performance out of anything except the top-of-the-line 2600 or higher.
You honestly thought a $50 video card was going to improve your performance in Oblivion? Paying $150 for that video card was your first mistake. You have the internet at your fingertips, do some research. Or better yet, just save us all the trouble and kill yourself. - Onestone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6The release notes are somewhat scary. Read them to see what I mean:
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.41.7.html - GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not too late, the market is growing, new potential buyers. Also we may have Nvidia cards but we will buy new machines at some time.
I wonder how much of this is companies like Dell pressurising them so they can improve their Linux lines. - Durrok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That helped you restore you linux install.... how?
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4unfortunately, I was in the same boat. But if you want to run flashy stuff like Beryl or Aero or Coreimage (platform agnostic, me) then you need a better card, no way around it. If you're just running a shell install then 9200 has lots of life left in it :)
- Acolyte357, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3"have you ever thought how windows is great for simplicity, not spending a day doing something trivial?" Yeah, I know. It's so great to never have to worry about removing a virus or spyware, and the really cool and powerful windows DOS emulation can do anything I want from a quick command prompt, like grep....ohh wait a sec.
- darkNiGHTS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That's not true, you can run beryl on integrated graphics.
- midtown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Haha yeah, it really is!
- pwnies, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Finally I can go back to loving ATI as it should be.
- panfist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They're finally opening up and there are fixes planned in the near future. Give them time to take some baby steps.
- tescovee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thank god, I small step for us ati linux users
- Bisqwit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Alas, it still ignores this bug report relating to fan speed and consequently excessive high temperature: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=759
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Tetris should run in far less than a megabyte.
- alspar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Those specs are for the open source drivers. This is the closed source driver.
- zeroK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm in the same boat too with my 9200 Mobility. And probably thanks to Ubuntu's driver policy I'm still running the last LTS instead of the most recent release of Ubuntu. ATI could at least keep a little bit of compatibility with older cards in their drivers ;-)
- xa2diaz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Does it fix the problem with google-earth?
- djangoxl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3And a freebsd version?? When will that come? I want to trash my Nvidia card the moment this driver hits the ports tree...
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1AIGLX support next month. Right now they've upgraded their drivers to support a few ***** bugs.
- phlegm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can install and lots of people have like myself. You may experience some weird bugs though.
- Greywhind, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yeah, but once again in this case, even when they seem so very close to actually really improving things, they STILL manage to screw it up by not giving us R500 and earlier users a working driver.
- lyzz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2They're not at NVIDIA's level yet.
This driver does not support AIGLX for Beryl or Compiz, but that support will finally arrive next month with fglrx 8.42. Linux 2.6.23 kernel support for the fglrx driver will hopefully arrive next month as well. - vipulgoel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0http://slashdot.org/~vipulgoel/journal/182135
