- secleinteer, on 10/11/2007, -7/+122Well ***** them. I doubt Azureus will be dropping Linux support any time soon. If ABC doesn't want to support Linux, then I guess I'll be watching their shows without the ads.
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -13/+120Why stop supporting Linux? If they already had support for linux, why remove it? You'd think, the more the merryer or something... lol
- selrahc, on 10/11/2007, -18/+90Already left them some feedback when I missed Lost and tried to watch it online. Its a good thing I still have an XP partition. Dugg so that others can let them know Linux users should be supported too.
- PhinnFort, on 10/11/2007, -9/+68Well, there are some excellent torrent clients available for Linux (not that I endorse privacy in any way).
- 0xception, on 10/11/2007, -11/+67Okay the problem with this isn't the fact that linux users can't watch their favorite shows anymore (that is just the catalyst) the real issue is the fact that abc.com has gone out of their way to cut support for linux users, as a web and software developer and as any other half way decent developer will tell you there is absolutely no reason why this wouldn't nor shouldn't work for all OS's. It's one this to exclude some browsers as the web developer may be lazy or code poorly and doesn't want to deal with browser hacks, but the OS makes no difference. Hell you could even use windows media player and linux can play it. No this has nothing to do with them not wanting to "fix" their page for linux support this has to do with companies actively denying people access. This pisses me off just the same way as SAMs club not accepting any other form of credit card but their own discover card. yes they have the right as a business but it still pisses off their customers, and as customers we have the right to bitch.
Now if they didn't' want to "support" linux users, then they could leave an option to continue to view the site without support. this would then give users who are on linux the ability to continue without the "technical support" that the Microsoft users would get. (and after reading many of the posters on this site, i believe most would need to use)
Needless to say this will only push more and more users away (yes a small number now, but that number is growing) - mikelieman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+52That's pretty much it. tvtorrents.com has it if abc.com doesn't.
- scrambled, on 10/11/2007, -8/+55PIRACY FTW
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+45The Pirate Bay still works.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -27/+66They are losing and alienating their own viewers. Someone just needs to point out to them that not everyone uses Windows.
- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -2/+39Exactly. ABC might as well support piracy.
- supert0ad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+37my feedback: "i know you're getting lots of complaints from the digg crowd over dropping linux support on the player, but don't worry about it. bittorrent will fill the void nicely."
- flag564, on 10/11/2007, -99/+133They are a free company offering a legal product. They made a legitimate business decision, if this story is true, to not offer this service to an OS with very few users, most of which do not use their site enough to justify the time and money spent supporting them.
You know they do have methods to count which OSs use their site, dont you?
Linux needs market share, then they can throw their weight around. - GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+36Dude, isohunt / tvtorrents / thepiratebay have it even if ABC DOES have it. Who wants streaming web-quality when there's a 720p torrent?
There is obviously licensing or something. Most websites don't allow international viewers, it's probably similar. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34Making it work for Vista wouldn't exclude it from Linux.
- Phssthpok, on 10/11/2007, -13/+42@GrayOne I love how Linux users cry so much.
You mean how we don't bend over and take it. As you evidently think we should?
Maybe that's the way your Daddy raised you, but some of us aren't content with that. - centauri, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31Do we need a complaint every time a story comes out with linux in the title?
- overlord44, on 10/11/2007, -13/+37@lane
Most people are too ignorant to know to use they're instead of their. - AlexFerny, on 10/11/2007, -11/+34Wouldn't the sensible business decision be to simply allow users to download the content in divx/xvid/x264 format and play in whatever player they want?
- InsaneMachine, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27Well they are supporting Windows and IE and Firefox, not to mention supporting Mac which is already based on Unix.
- cheztir, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27did ABC ever consider an FLV player? Probably not. Last time i checked that's just about every OS approved.
- TriZz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24@ Phinnfort: "(not that I endorse privacy in any way)."
Privacy is very important. Endorse it. Please. The Government has stopped. You, as well as the rest of Digg, should not.
Piracy on the other hand... - Gavagai80, on 10/11/2007, -9/+27It doesn't take any effort whatsoever to support linux, it takes effort to exclude it. It's a flash 8 player. Linux has flash 9. They're spending extra resources to exclude people for no reason whatsoever except their own ignorance.
- kabz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23Dear ABC,
I am using FLASH 9 on Ubuntu Linux 7.04 and am no longer able to view videos on your site.
You may have heard that DELL is now selling machines preloaded with Ubuntu.
I myself own a Mac and a PC on which Ubuntu is installed. I would like to be able to watch Lost from any of my PCs.
Please consider restoring the Linux/Firefox FLASH 9 support.
Best Regards,
Jonathan Watmough - Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Usually people who call out other people for not being "mature" have to, in fact, be mature themselves for it to hold weight.
Based on your comment, this clearly isn't the case. - chicken101, on 10/11/2007, -16/+30You went out of your way to make sure that people who use linux cannot watch your videos online.
***** you.
(that's what I should have put) - openaddy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Might have to do with the NEW player; the only time I watched an episode of something on ABC, it started some NEW player, which didn't work for me. I had to resort to the OLD player. I was on a XP box, too...
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Your comment fails simply because your idea of "established standards" is all closed codecs that have to be reverse-engineered in order to play them with free software.
- Disfnord, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Yeah, man. I'm so sick of Linux stories in the Linux section of Digg.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18Everyone here who says that they dropped Linux to support Vista... you are ignorant. They dropped Linux support AND added Vista support.
- MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Established standards?
All 4 of the things you listed are closed and proprietary solutions. - dubiousmike, on 10/11/2007, -9/+21Move Networks is the one who build the player. If you have a problem, bitch to them. The quality of video is some of the best out there. The scaling to full screen is very clean. ABC is going to use whatever looks best.
ABC web developers have absolutely nothing to do with this.
I work for ABC digital, so I know. - talan64, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14There is no reason to turn every Digg about OS support into a "name calling drop down drag out fight" about operating systems. Face it, the world needs ALL of the operating systems we have right now. If there was only one, then not only would that company be able to charge whatever they want for updates and new versions, but then that company would also be "in charge" of the whole world. Linux is good for Microsoft! Mac is good for Microsoft! If not for Linux, half of the world servers (or more) would have to run MS server software, and the downtime would be astronomical! If not for "choices" MS would be charging >$1000, for Vista, and not "giving it away" with new canned computers.
If you like Windows, and have NEVER tried any flavor of Linux, then you don't have a foot to stand on, and need to keep your Linux comments to yourself.
If you like Linux, the way to get Windows users to try out a different operating system, is not by slamming them and calling them names...etc. It is to "show" them how much better Linux can be.
One other thing for the Windows users that don't want to try or have tried and not liked other operating systems, remember that competition is always good for the consumer!! It forces companies to not get "lazy" and pushes advancements. If not for Linux and Mac, We'd all still be running Win95, and rebooting every 2 hours! - mcmlxxii, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14@TTARider
Business/Industry standard? Have you ever tried coding in HTML? Hey why not type "Internet Explorer bug fix" into google just for a laugh. - Fhwqhgads, on 10/11/2007, -13/+24"Why stop supporting Linux? If they already had support for linux, why remove it? You'd think, the more the merryer or something... lol"

Isn't it obvious? ABC has their lips firmly fastened around Bill Gates *****. - syowr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Haha what an immature and whiny bitch way of calling others immature whiny bitches.
Classic. - MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Actually if you change you UA to say it's IE on Windows (User Agent Switcher extension) it then says you need to have Flash 8 or higher installed. So it could mean it is a Flash based player. Unfortunately I have Flash 9 installed and it still doesn't work.
- jbus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I summited this...
This is ridiculous, there are currently more Linux users online than there are Mac users. I was also previously able to watch ABC shows before using Linux until someone at ABC went out of their way to exclude Linux users. This is completely unnecessary, desktop Linux can do about 99% of what Mac and Windows can do, EXCEPT when companies like ABC decide to specifically discriminate against Linux users. I will be contacting my state attorney general about this blatant discrimination and anticompetitive behavior on ABC's part. - sonnyF, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14I just want to point out to everyone that the videos on ABC is not encoded in Flash. The technology used to stream the video in HD like quality is by Move Networks. It dynamically monitors the user's bandwidth and changes bitrates, accordingly, to provide the best video quality. You need to download and install a plug-in or add-on to play videos, Move Networks only supports Macs and Windows. The only thing that is Flashed-based from ABC is the Flash player. But to watch the videos inside the player you must install the plug-in by Move Networks.
It's unfortunate that Linux users are left out, but the technology to stream the videos is far superior to the Flash encoded videos on NBC and the Real encoded ones on CBS. The only other network using Move Network technology is Fox/MySpace. In fact, they were the first one to use it. So why didn't Linux users complain about it before ABC starting using it? - jbus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10@Darcy
As of 2007 the worldwide desktop Linux market share is estimated to be about 6% verses Mac's 4.5%.
Mac does have a SLIGHT edge on the market share over desktop Linux in the US. But, at the rate Linux market share is growing, I don't expect that Mac market share will be able to greatly out pace Linux in the US. Linux does have the advantage over Mac in that it's free and PC AND Mac users can easily switch without further investment in new hardware. Instead, I think both Mac and Linux will continue to chip away very steadily at Microsoft's market share with Linux overtaking Mac in the market share race as it has in the rest of the world. - STARTSOMETHING, on 10/11/2007, -9/+17I wont miss it
I just watched 4 minutes of ugly betty and almost stabbed my brain with a q-tip - nitrojunky24, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I think i will rip it and put on youtube just to piss them off and put an intro that explains how stupid and arrogant they are not that I watch lost anyway just to piss them off. maybe they will see that if they don't give to us the way we want then we make available the way we want whether they like it or not I mean if people take that kind effort then you know you got something good so put some extra effort into making it available so everybody who wants to watch it can!
- ClassicQ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Who cares ... Apparently only the USA matters to ABC ... not like there's any where else in the world exists, let alone Linux. ::-) [rolling eyes]
- wired4u, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11It is ok, I have other ways of watching lost on my computer better faster ways with no ads
- MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Those who would complain probably don't use MySpace. I can't speak about Fox, though.
(MySpace should be avoided like the plague) - bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -11/+18"Someone just needs to point out to them that not everyone uses Windows."
no, but most do... and all it takes is most. - obiyoda, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10ABC is using the system provided by Move Networks http://movenetworks.com. So if you want support in linux why not let the developers of the streaming media technology know?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7i dont know which problem to complain about...the linux one or the "you are non US visitor, this video is unavailable in your area"
i guess companies already starting to ruin the internet....shame on you - cynicist, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9So they are going by marketshare, but they support OSX? It only has about 4% more than linux
- inkswamp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8No, that's not necessarily true that this is based on most of their customers running Windows. I've worked on corporate Web sites and the primary reason this kind of thing happens is because a lot of corporate types truly buy into this idea that the Web *is* Internet Explorer on Windows and that the rest of those browsers and OSes out there are just copycats that don't really need to be supported. I've seen directives to ignore non-IE browsers, even thoughh the audience for those other browsers continues to grow. The numbers of users on a given OS is really a non-issue in the corporate environment. It all really comes from this whole attitude of "MS is the winning team" and "MS is the Web" that really grates on my nerves.
- MOGua, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9This has nothing to do with Microsoft. The technology from Move Networks only works on Windows and Mac OS.
By the way, ABC is owned by Disney and Steve Jobs is the largest individual shareholder of Disney (7%).
Do you still think ABC can be "bribed" by Microsoft? -
