- Alex2, on 02/09/2008, -0/+54It's the 21'st century. You're supposed to be able to just talk to your computer.
OPEN THE POD BAY DOORS!! - stutimandal, on 02/09/2008, -10/+46Apple Fanboys! Please don't read linux threads if you find it useless.
- ggko, on 02/09/2008, -1/+33Nearly 70 of these... umm, anyone have a cheat sheet for the cheat sheets?
- scottklarr, on 02/09/2008, -2/+31LOL. Im not going to get into the whole which OS is better debate because its childish, but I will say that I do 95% of my everyday computer operations without having to use the command line (i run mandriva linux). And also keep in mind, OSX is built from unix, just as linux is. There are a lot more similarities than you would think. But anyways, i will also be gathering some mac cheat sheets in the near future so subscribe if you may be interested in checking them out :)
- Remmy, on 02/09/2008, -2/+31You know what I don't get? Why people complain or make fun of the command line. What's wrong with getting to know your Operating System better? It saves you loads of time and saves technical support or communities from bashing their heads in with a keyboard.
- stutimandal, on 02/09/2008, -3/+28I just finished installing Ubuntu 7.10 and I am slowly migrating from Bindows XP. Thank you!
- UKsHaDoW, on 02/09/2008, -1/+25most of those commands work on os x
- oobuntu, on 02/09/2008, -3/+24some of these are quite good (usually the well put-together pdfs), but some are an embarrassment - look at this one! http://www.informationweek.com/software/opensource ...
- iwilldigg, on 02/09/2008, -0/+19ls - listed all the cheatsheets
cp - copied to my local drive
lpr - printed all the important ones - Giga, on 02/09/2008, -0/+19Most of those cheat sheets would apply to OS X as well...
- getrealnow, on 02/09/2008, -0/+17L2REPLY
- oobuntu, on 02/09/2008, -1/+17noobs beware - this may look like a bunch of smiley faces but is a one line shell script called a forkbomb and will crash your system.
....and if you type it onto google, i hear you will crash the internet :) - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -4/+18Thank you very much for this. As a new Linux user, this information is greatly appreciated!
- oobuntu, on 02/09/2008, -0/+13hopefully one of these chaps with loads of time on their hands will aggregate all this great stuff into one 20 page ultimate crib sheet PDF (lots of commands are duplicates and some commands are so old fashioned they are never used any more.....)
- p0tent1al, on 02/09/2008, -0/+11I'm pretty sure a lot of these commands can be used in terminal in OSX.
- herrshuster, on 02/09/2008, -1/+12same, except I was forced to suddenly migrate because I accidentally reformatted my hard drive
- baalzebub, on 02/09/2008, -0/+10yup, i totally agree, knowing the console (CLI) is more important than knowing the configuration utilities of your favorite window manager, if something breaks and you can not start X then you better know how to resolve your problem from the console or be left fixing it the microsoft way (reinstall the whole bloody operating system)...
- jamdogg, on 02/09/2008, -1/+11"Computer. Find all the files that half installed and were buried under some obscure directory. I want this HD tidied up." - would be useful.
- scottklarr, on 02/09/2008, -2/+12Everybody starts somewhere. Instead of talking down to them, try helping them like i am by gathering these cheat sheets for people who find them useful.
- CypherXero, on 02/09/2008, -0/+9Go fork() yourself.
- MtheoryX, on 02/09/2008, -1/+9Actually, I'm reading this BECAUSE im an OS X user. Fantastic resource!
- djbon2112, on 02/09/2008, -5/+13And people wonder why Linux won't go mainstream... it's bitchy, holier-than-thou attitudes like this.
Here's a tip: if you want people to leave Windows and pick up your OS, don't act like an arrogant prick. - scottklarr, on 02/09/2008, -0/+8go touch yourself haha
- djbon2112, on 02/09/2008, -0/+8I also have to agree. I hear so many people say they don't want to use Linux because they don't want to use the command line. WTF? I find it much easier to type "sudo apt-get install amarok" than to have to browse though countless menus looking for it. The CLI just makes everything easier.
- karolisonline, on 02/09/2008, -2/+10I don't think 69 is appropriate number for linux topic, if You get what I mean.
- MtheoryX, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7You're an idiot. In addition to the valuable information in these cheat sheets (hey, you don't think that's Unix you're running with your pretty interface?), some of us who run OS X also happen to do a bit of non-OS X administration. This is an outstanding resource.
BTW, if you think these are bad, you haven't investigated true OS X Server administration, have you? Cheat sheets are an awesome tool, an excellent contribution to the community, and the quantity of cheat sheets does, in no way, correlate to the worth of a particular application or operating system.
In short, you're a tool, and bring shame to the game. - tcpip4lyfe, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7bindows?
- dreadroberts, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7Actually, they use voice commands for the basic interface stuff. But even in Star Trek if you're on an enemy ship and you want to do somethinkg advanced like hack into it's system, you would have to go to a text terminal and type rapidly.
- meez, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6Except, the terminal is a far more powerful and faster way to do certain tasks...
- Sairgem, on 02/09/2008, -5/+11Guess what, it's ***** like you why many people don't even think about trying linux. They ask a question, and some piece of ***** like yourself pops in with "omg you fukn noob go read man page".
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5Dugg for 69.
- sudowrestler, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5Speaking as a OS X nerd, you're missing out on a lot of the Mac's power if you choose not to learn anything about Unix. And way to go with the pointless trolling.
- dealseeker, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6So aggregating Google search results into a big list counts as ... something?
- scottklarr, on 02/09/2008, -10/+15oobuntu, your right that one really is pointless. I went ahead and removed that one.
- flarn2006, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5Go fsck yourself.
- marx2k, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5What, learning something? Deciding to read?
- encrypteduser, on 02/09/2008, -4/+8pft, we know all of the commands already. ;)
- sarixe, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4if only everything were that simple... including this
- runningscared, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Didn't crash my eeepc. Just shut down the terminal.
- SQLserver, on 02/09/2008, -4/+8It seems that many Vista/OS X losers are coming here and saying:
"LOL YOU NEED TO TYPE COMMANDS AND HAVE CHEAT SHEET IN LINSUX LOL"
What they simply don't understand, is that in a modern Desktop Linux, you rarely will have to use the command line to do FAR more then in OS X or Vista.
I'd like to see how much these people know about THEIR Terminals, and have them explain why THEIR terminals are soo much easy.
(Really, Bash/Zsh are FAR better then the OS X terminal or the windows Command Prompt) - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+4Dugg for the reference to the obscure comic "Techie Cooking."
- ZephyrNinety, on 02/09/2008, -2/+6What the ***** is "Bindows" supposed to even mean?
- javaroast, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4man hier
- mrbambastik, on 02/09/2008, -1/+469, this covers everything, from head to tail!
- scottklarr, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3thanks for sharing your opinion but I will bet you've never learned to use linux thus making your point, well, pointless.
- mCanada, on 02/09/2008, -8/+11I have some bad news for you. Fill in the the blanks. OSX runs on Darw_n . Dar_in is U_ix and it's Open Sauce.
- bliz, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3did you lose any data?
- cjstone, on 02/09/2008, -1/+4Um, Mac OS X is Unix-based. Terminal's default shell is bash, and zsh is there too. Most of these cheat sheet commands will work on Mac OS X , though there are lots of Mac-specific commands as well.
- JQP123, on 02/09/2008, -2/+5"GUI's are simpler, yes, but not faster."
GUIs can be both simpler *and* faster for the occasional or inexperienced user.
Given a user that is unfamiliar with either vim or Windows Notepad, which do you think would be the faster way to produce a properly formatted letter?
The mistake that the keyboard aficionados make is ignoring the time required to study, learn and memorize an unfamiliar command structure in order to become proficient. A great many *ordinary* users don't spend a majority of their time in front of a keyboard. - frontporsche, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3I like these cheat sheets. ... not for use as cheat sheets, but to scan through and look for important commands and options you might not be familiar with.
