- Hellothere123, on 08/17/2008, -2/+39Don't forget gnome-look.org or kde-look.org
- perfectska04, on 08/17/2008, -1/+21The mentioned sites are no-brainers. Other sites to keep all your GNU/Linux needs covered would be:
http://www.phoronix.com/ -- For GNU/Linux hardware reviews and other software news.
http://www.gnomefiles.org/ -- Easiest way to keep track of the latest stable versions of your favorite apps.
http://www.gnome-look.org/ -- Best site/community for artwork. There are also many sister sites that focus on environment/distro-specific content, such as kde-look and so on.
http://www.getdeb.net/ --Binary packages for Debian-based distros.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas --Unofficial repos for the latest stable version of your favorite apps. (Ubuntu-centric?)
http://appdb.winehq.org/ --Database for for wine.
There are plenty more essential sites, but this is just what I can remember off the top of my head. - AboveandBeyond, on 08/17/2008, -13/+23It's quiet in here... can you hear the echo?
- TKn00b, on 08/17/2008, -2/+11This has helped me more than any of those other sites:
www.google.com - Meekus, on 08/17/2008, -3/+12Yeah, I wish games were developed for linux. I think once (if?) that starts to happen, linux will become much more main stream.
- funkyloki, on 08/17/2008, -1/+8Actually, you're fifth
- jjustin01, on 08/17/2008, -1/+7At the top of the list should be:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name ...
Maybe then they might get the point we want the Flash player fixed! - anyweb, on 08/17/2008, -1/+6the article forgot one that really is useful for those who are new to linux, namely http://www.linux-noob.com
The site is aimed at those who are starting or even thinking about using linux, and provides howtos for simple tasks and even complex compiling resources for those who've improved their linux skills - blendmaster, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3http://www.linux.com always has interesting articles.
- Drahkar, on 08/17/2008, -4/+7You obviously haven't been using Vista for very long. There is a long list of games you have to tweak Vista or completely disable UAC in order to get them to work.
Now if you were to say Windows XP and not having to jump through hoops you would look a little less like a douche, but nothing changes the fact that you ARE a douche because your theory about how difficult it is to run games on Linux is based on flawed logic. If the game was actually made for Linux it wouldn't be difficult to get installed and playing. The games that require all the how-tos, special apps and special 'Modes' were written for an entirely different operating system.
Try and think things through before you attempt to make fun of something. You'll look less stupid. - dougle, on 08/17/2008, -1/+3Kept crashing
- bhalo05, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2You could also say those (few) games require some tweaking in Vista because they weren't made for Vista either.
- damagedone666, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2fsdaily.com is digg for free software
- Archer007, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2Kernel panic.
- ZGambit, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2All Linux users should be going to the Google Home Page :P
- darthjure, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2I've got a Vista machine and a Linux machine and I agree with you.
- netnifty, on 08/17/2008, -1/+3http://www.linuxwireless.co.uk is quite handy if you're buying wireless hardware for Linux.
- sx66gns, on 08/17/2008, -1/+3***** haters running wild.
- perfectska04, on 08/17/2008, -2/+3Also, some other pages that helped me out a lot when I was still trying to figure out things:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_reduce_power_ ... --Tips for reducing power consumption on laptops.
http://www.lesswatts.org/ --Same as above.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=847773 --Scripts to reduce power consumption.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpSamba --Guide for setting up samba.
http://ubuntusoftware.info/Howto_tweak_ubuntu_ulti ... --Misc. performance tweaks.
http://ushare.geexbox.org/ --Stream movies to Xbox360/PS3. Has little to no overhead, and works for most video files (except for .mp4 and .mkv for me, at least.) - Fergy, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1http://www.google.com/linux
- drunkmuppet, on 08/17/2008, -2/+3LOL you paid for vista!! OWNED...
- hazello, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1No, it's the DVD consortiums fault. Remember the guy that went to court in Denmark? All he did was release a way to play DVDs on Linux.
Was this relatd to piracy - copying movies? No, you don't need to decode the dvd for that!
It's about how they charge per remote control and per player. When you get free player, nobody paid their litle mafia fee. - dougle, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu%2C+windows+v ...
- sx66gns, on 08/17/2008, -1/+2The man pages was a good suggestion , I own the others represented here on a daily basis.
- fafnir314, on 08/17/2008, -5/+6I see what you did there
- RaulMuadDib, on 08/17/2008, -5/+6yes...yes....yes...
- darthjure, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1Just compare Linux and Vista to get the whole story:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=linux%2C+vista&ctab ... - dougle, on 08/17/2008, -2/+3http://www.ubuntuguide.org
- afrothunderman, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1All the best, truthful, and unbiased linux info in one place
Microsoft, how would you like your linux today? (Play on the old 95 slogan for those who didn't know) - Nouman6, on 08/17/2008, -3/+4A little uniqueness in topics would be great.
- flxfxp, on 08/18/2008, -1/+2Thats great. Just about the same time I'm done writing my novel at Starbucks
- kabul2, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1is not cool )=
- Sawta, on 08/18/2008, -1/+1"Specially beneficial for the ones who dislikes reading from the terminal."
...who dislike WHAT?! - malu05, on 08/17/2008, -2/+2Bad Habs...
http://www.google.com/trends?q=linux%2C+windows+vi ... - mamchenkov, on 08/18/2008, -0/+0As a grumpy Red Hat/Fedora user I don't see much value in this list. I have all the LDP and Linux Manpages content already installed locally, and there is nothing for me over at either Gentoo or Ubuntu forums or wikis. Oh, and I already made my choice of distribution, so DistroWatch is not exactly what I need. If I were to pick sites for the list, I'd go with Slashdot, Digg, and Linux Weekly News.
- darthjure, on 08/17/2008, -3/+3Maybe I could find the secret to playing a DVD on my Linux laptop. When I insert a DVD I get a message like: Does not recognize format [DVD]
Apparently Linux can't play DVDs without some user tweaks because it's copy protected.
Recently I was able to add a new functionality called "Mute" to my Linux machine after spending a few hours on message boards like these. (I still like my Linux machine, but I didn't have to do anything like that with my Vista machine.)
I know, I know: If a user has a problem on a Microsoft machine, it's Microsoft's fault. If a user has a problem on a Linux machine, it's the user's fault. - neFariou5, on 08/17/2008, -2/+1Wow so many 30 secs haters. I'd like to see you to produce music anywhere near that level.
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -2/+1Vista sux lol!!!!!!!!!!! n00b
- FolkTheory, on 08/17/2008, -4/+1tell me about this special boot modes of yours, i never heard of them. what applications did you install for this? did you really install more than one?
- SLockhart, on 08/18/2008, -4/+1They missed one.
http://tiny.cc/dAS4t - yojiffyskippy, on 08/17/2008, -4/+1Who looks like the douche now?
- lovesujoy, on 08/17/2008, -7/+3yes, there are tons of sites, i am contemplating a write up on modding the default look :)
expect it in a couple of days. - inactive, on 08/17/2008, -6/+2Another overweight Linux user complaining about Vista, surprise surprise.
Look son, I can play Crysis with a medium end graphics card and still get a reasonable FPS, I'd like to see you Linux-tards try that without spending months configuring your " computer "
So sad, - computershack, on 08/17/2008, -5/+0http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/def ...
- slugicide, on 08/17/2008, -8/+2Buried as lame. Also, Linux4Life.
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -17/+10Digg doesn't have enough info on Linux, thank you for this.
