- wush, on 01/03/2008, -6/+486. Just because you can have wobbling semi-transparent windows that are on fire, it doesn't mean you should.
- CraigJ, on 01/03/2008, -5/+45I don't fear the command line, I fear the GUI.
- stegre, on 01/03/2008, -2/+31Tip #6: VLC is your friend! ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ )
- c0ldfusi0n, on 01/03/2008, -3/+271. Scout your distro's community help sites, FAQs. mailing lists and software sources
2. Use package managers over manual install
3. DON'T LOG IN AS ROOT!!
4. Use Google
5. Use Google - shortstacks, on 01/03/2008, -2/+26personally, i think #1 is the most important for a new user. it gets them involved right from the beginning w/o a whole lot of work or consequence for doing n00b things
- mvent2, on 01/03/2008, -4/+28Here is an even better tip:
Kill yourself. - mozone, on 01/03/2008, -0/+22I would rather break a bunch of ***** and then have to fix it. That's how I really learn how things work.
- luigi1015, on 01/03/2008, -2/+18Dell gaming desktop with Windows Vista: $899
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0: $59.95
Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007: $119.99
The ability to troll Digg and call Linux worthless .... Priceless - romistrub, on 01/03/2008, -1/+16It's fun for the first week!
- SDL486, on 01/03/2008, -1/+16i'll admit i'm a noob to linux and the live cd's definitely helped me choose the right os
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -4/+19"5. Ask for help before you get frustrated."
It's true, Google is your friend. The countless "Linux sucks! My wireless card doesn't work!" posts in linux threads on Digg is testament that some people give up and call linux a piece of *****, instead of googling or asking for help in the right forums/IRC channels and actually trying to learn something. - Eldoo77, on 01/04/2008, -0/+15...Or Gentoo
- romistrub, on 01/03/2008, -2/+16Why?
- CraigJ, on 01/03/2008, -0/+12I don't really agree with #3. If I'm doing system maintenance I'll log in as root or su rather than sudo every command, of course this is command line. I don't log in as root to a GUI or for regular use, however.

3. If your a raving moron who deletes random files you know nothing about, stick to ubuntu and never use root. - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+11and my tip: block animus - sad lonely troll that it is
- CalcProgrammer1, on 01/03/2008, -1/+11Yes, it provides all the codecs you'll need to make it through! It's a great player, everyone should use it, but no, Ubuntu has some lame one. VLC is the perfect addition to any Ubuntu box.
- rento, on 01/03/2008, -1/+11I think new Linux users have an easier way in. So much time, passion and pain wasted trying to configure ""simple"" things. Features like yum and wine and most of all, the enlargement of the Linux community have made a huge difference.
Plunge into Linux you wont regret it. - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -3/+12#6 avoid pain and frustration and never use Redhat
- tech10171968, on 01/04/2008, -1/+10Do you know the definition of irony? "Momshizzle's" anti-linux comment was made on a Windows computer that visited Digg.com - a website run on LINUX servers.
Your inability to understand something doesn't mean that it "sucks" - drunkwally, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8Yea I call up Microsoft all the time for help and they're so helpful. /sarcasm
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8you could accidentally delete something or move something that tanks your entire system.
- DarkDragon, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8su & sudo -- don't login as root...
- tech10171968, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8If Kevin Rose would have followed your advice, Digg.com would not exist. Those are his words, not mine. In fact, Linux servers host more than half the sites you visit on your Windows box. Worthless? I don't think so.
- romistrub, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7... bait much?
- schneidafunk, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7Talk about a worthless OS - windows vista has what advantage exactly? Obviously there's nothing worth while about Linux / Unix being the core of the internet...
- Corrosionx, on 01/04/2008, -5/+12If you have a 64 bit processor, use the 32 bit distribution or suffer headaches.
- MainframeF4, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6I think everyone should have a LiveCD of some distro on hand. My laptop drive crashed and with a live CD of Ubuntu i am still able to get online.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5you obviously havent learn the linux mantra yet: RTFM then RTFM again
- DteK, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5linux is not for everyone.
If windows does what you need and want then why switch.
I feel the same about linux distros. I use fedora for desktop and slack for servers and have never had a need to switch to any of the new fangled distros such as Ubuntu. Use what works for you. - dude187, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6Haha my computer runs Gentoo and only Gentoo and I still dugg you up.
The price you pay for cutting edge packages... - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -2/+7dont feed the trolls
- andycr512, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4I would recommend starting with Ubuntu, even if you decide not to stay with it. Say what you might, I've found it to have the best hardware support out of the box over and over.
- RoadWarriorX11, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5RIP
- mithrasinvictus, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5Pick one with a livecd, try it out. If you don't like it, eject the disk and try another.
- mezoko, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4Umm where on microsoft's website can you say that windows is stupid, windows sucks, etc... without out getting banned from posting. Also mircosoft does not provide support, well maybe for a fee, but..... Granted there are some people in linux irc channels (especially) that will tell you to google, RTFM, etc... but there are a lot of people that are very very willing to help if your willing to learn. I have met people whom have helped me that way and I have given help that way :)
- mezoko, on 01/04/2008, -1/+5Only major problem out in the 64bit world is the lack of flash mainly, ofcourse there are other programs, but that the major downside, everything else pretty much works.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4easy there tuff guy, i wasnt insulting you per se, but to the average guy who posts easy to find answers to simple basic concepts on message boards and forums looking for easy way outs of doing their own homework. (i like typing in lower case when i can by the way ;-)
also i'm a slackware user, if you dont use linux you probably dont know what that is but generally we're a no nonsense cut and dry breed. we can normally be of extreme help to people that need it, but expect that people arent spineless losers that cant help themselves first. yes i am sort of a prick to people cause thats who i am but it doesnt mean i wont help you with what you need help with. for example ill show the wrong way and right way to ask for help:
-wheres the terminal? (WRONG)
-hey i have this box open on my desktop and it has a command line in it, thats my terminal right? (RIGHT)
-what does it mean to edit a text file? (WRONG)
-i figured out i have this thing called vim on my computer that can edit text files, what can i use this for exactly? (RIGHT)
my point being, prove you actually took some time to figure things out on your own before asking other people ***** you were too lazy to look up. give respect, get respect. ;-) - thestorey, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3I recently got into linux because i wanted to do more with my NEC MP900c so i put JLime ( http://www.jlime.com ) on it and had to learn :P now that i know the basics my NEC is just as usefull as any other machine i have.
- andycr512, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3"At a corporation, like Microsoft, if you need help, they'll be polite and do everything they can to help you out."
Polite... and clueless. If I have the slightest unorthodox issue, they are toast. If it doesn't come up on their screen, they don't know it. I also can't understand them - nothing against Indians, but I can't understand them and they can't understand me, frustrating us both - which makes it take even longer. - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4again...........
RTFM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why is it so hard to do? are you illiterate or just ***** that lazy? - tech10171968, on 01/04/2008, -2/+5The REAL reason people get so upset over Linux is that, to use it, Linux forces you to do the things you should have been doing the whole time, even on Windows. Windows tends to hold a user's hand through a lot of stuff which really should have been basic knowledge in the first place.
It's like going from using a GPS unit to reading an actual map. You might say the GPS is somehow "superior", but when you've never used anything else you have no idea that your basic mapreading skills have atrophied (or that you never developed them in the first place). - epimer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Why? Linux can read from and write to NTFS just fine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ntfs-3g - niallabrown, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Actually I have never experienced this in a forum. And I posted a lot of questions mainly in the Ubutnu forum when I started. Now I volunteer to browse a gOS forum for new users giving help because I was inspired by all of the people who gave so much to me without asking for anything.
- andycr512, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3"It is ones right to have something that works out of the box without having to "learn something" (that they ll forget next day)."
Since when is it their right? And since when are such people switching to Linux? - UKsHaDoW, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2I think he said mainly because it looks ugly.
- rento, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Yeah! Also just because you have a GUI you don't have to use it. Why use open office when you can use VI? Also you should be on your knee with one hand tied behind your back.. And please don't try to use it as a computer per se use it only as a server or development engine And next time write your own OS.
- ostracize, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Totally agree. I loved the Gentoo philosophy but using it on the desktop was a mistake. I ran into conflicts regularly and while support was fast on the forums, I think the devs could do a better job anticipating potential problems before they happen.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -2/+4RTFM isnt just a catchy saying...DO IT FOR CHRISTS SAKE! youd be surprised the vast amount of friendly information it provides and youll feel better about it knowing you did it on your own. the only people that get shunned upon in forums are idiots that say ***** like "whats a partition? halp!!!!" and "wheres the terminal?"
- Smegzor, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2I've never understood these comments about missing flash. Its working perfectly on my 64bit Ubuntu. The only app that doesn't work currently is VMWare but I am very happy with VirtualBox so no problems.
