Choice is good - weizbox, on 04/19/2008, -2/+15/sarcasm?
I'm guessing not due to your previous comments like 'The Ubuntu revolution is finally starting'
To say that people wouldn't use Linux if it weren't for Ubuntu is just horribly wrong. Those people using Linux before Ubuntu even existed is one of the reasons that Ubuntu exists at all.
You digging articles like http://digg.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_has_won_the_dist ... just shows everyone how blind you are to the facts, and how little you know about Linux as a whole. Once you know more about Linux, I think you'll find out that every distro can have some features in it that can be better than others for different people and applications. I just guess your not there yet...
Ubuntu is a great distro... but unfortunately elitist fanboys like yourself give the users a bad name... therefore provoking comments like 'Reason 6: Its not Ubuntu'. - FapCommander, on 04/19/2008, -1/+7I never said Ubuntu was bad, I was just trying to pint out that there are other distros out there
- wontstoptalking, on 04/20/2008, -0/+6Ubuntu is a little.... overstuffed. It's great, but somehow Fedora just seems more... polished. Ubuntu works, and it's got a huge community, but Fedora seems an overall more professional OS. Now, I haven't really seen Ubuntu 8.04, but Fedora 9 just looks sweet.
- weizbox, on 04/19/2008, -1/+6meh... bad example then, my bad man :)
I think I got the point across tho... hopefully
I totally agree on checking out some other distros tho... you'll never know what your missing till you do some exploring :) - Nushio, on 04/19/2008, -0/+4Fedora is Gnome-Centric, however you can install KDE, and there are KDE-Live CDs and DVDs that "get you started" using KDE instead of Gnome. This is thanks to the Fedora KDE SIG (Special Interest Group)
- krische, on 04/20/2008, -2/+6Correction: if it wasn't for Ubuntu, there would be no where near as many *elitist fanboy ubuntu* linux users.
Quit acting like Ubuntu created linux. If anything, it has just brought over more of the "I'm better than you" crowd from Windows and Macs.
Just let people enjoy their distro of choice in peace. - MeneerR, on 04/20/2008, -0/+4Completely true.
One small detail though: There is very little original work in any other distrobution as well.
It's called collaboration. It's sort of how open-source works.
And although little of the ubuntu specific innovations (i can only think of upstart) end up in other distro's, they often do seem to get a lot of inspiration out of them. Like add/remove, automatic codec installation, etc.
Also, ubuntu is one of the most _tested_ (not saying most stable!) distrobutions. A huge part of all the bugs in every new gnome release get reported and fixed downstream at ubuntu and end up in the upstream tree. Ready to improve the stability of all the other distrobutions as well.
The truth is, there are only three distrobutions with a large backing behind it. Ubuntu, SUSE, RedHat/Fedora. But novell is tained, red hat focuses more on the server, etc.
But even when a 'distro' innovates, it often just means the upstream authors are using _that_ distrobution. The code ends up in most of them anyway. Top-down designed solutions (like Canonical saying let's develop X we need that, or Novell saying let's develop Y, etc. is about 1% of what you have on your desktop.
The other 99% is done by people outside of the official dev-teams of any of these distrobutions. - Remmy, on 04/19/2008, -3/+6You mean, without Ubuntu, you wouldn't know what GNU/Linux is. Considering that half of your comments are incorrectly spelled, I would say I was probably using Linux while you were still in diapers. Ubuntu does deserve some credit, but not for what you think. They made other distributions more aware of a world looking for an alternative and now these distributions are stepping up their game to bring it to the world.
The truth is that Ubuntu has for the most part picked pieces from other distributions and put it all in theirs. There is very little original work in Ubuntu. - rtaibah, on 05/22/2009, -2/+5I loved Fedora when I installed it sometime ago, but just the fact that it's RPM based totally turned me off...
- rdieter, on 04/20/2008, -0/+3The latter, ie, KDE4 is the default (and only) KDE desktop.
- krische, on 04/20/2008, -1/+4In my opinion, I prefer RPMs since they seem to be much easier to install. But thats the beauty of linux, there's pretty much a distro to keep everyone happy.
- Kingoftherings, on 04/20/2008, -1/+4Fedora is looking awesome.
I just tried out the Ubuntu 8.04 RC today, and it wouldn't even boot, so I'm gonna give Fedora another try. I used the Beta, and the only problem I had was PakageKit didn't work, at first I couldn't view packages, then later on I could, but I never could get it to install anything, so I just used the terminal. :/ - killbert24, on 04/20/2008, -3/+5The new KDE 4 looks ugly in my opinion. The huge black bar at the bottom and then the Vista rip-off side bar. Blech.
I also know that with Fedora you can customize your OS to look pretty much however you want, so I'm not knocking Fedora itself, just the aesthetics of the default KDE. - iRelinquish, on 04/20/2008, -0/+2why do you need a .deb distro? an rpm turned me off when i was new. But honestly its just a little different. Ive used portage as a package manager, and when you do that you'll never complain about what format stuff is in.
- kingofpenguins, on 04/19/2008, -1/+3Is KDE4 the default desktop, or the default KDE desktop? I hope it's the first.
- kingofpenguins, on 04/20/2008, -1/+3Try sidux. It's based on (uses) Debian Sid's repos, and therefore has the latest packages. If a packages is broken, sidux will use a patched/fixed version if it's been pushed to the separate sidux repositories. Don't worry about it being based on Unstable, as Ubuntu is built from Unstable every 6 months also. I ran it for a long time before moving to Arch and never had any problems.
sidux is primarily a KDE distro though, so if you don't like Gnome, you're out of luck. Gnome and/or GTK is often broken in Sid (unlike KDE), and none of the developers support Gnome. - TheWindBlows, on 04/20/2008, -1/+3I know what you mean about the default KDE 4 Black Look.
Though I'm not much of a fan for KDE's default looks for 3 either. - kingofpenguins, on 04/19/2008, -1/+2Yes I know, but I'm wondering about new Linux users who pick up a Fedora 9 install disk, whether their first experience will be with KDE or with Gnome.
- AEdgett77, on 04/20/2008, -2/+3I dugg your comment on ubuntu :/
- kalel90, on 04/20/2008, -4/+5I have a different way of putting if it wasn't for Ubuntu there would be no where near as many linux users.
Digg me down if you wish. - MeneerR, on 04/19/2008, -2/+3You did get the point accross. He was just trolling.
Why is it always the ubuntu-haters (fabcommander) that want to make the talk about ubuntu in every thread. It makes no sense. He just had the urge to go diss Ubuntu, yet this was Red Hat's moment.
Maybe it's some sort reverse pshychology. Ubuntu must be cool cuz he is such a dick. - Kingoftherings, on 04/20/2008, -1/+2Yeah, RPM is definitely a big turn off for me. I've been looking for new distros to try after Ubuntu, and Debian was really the only one I liked that was Deb based. :(
- Shadowman, on 04/20/2008, -1/+2MeneerR, I think FapCommander's comment was just a "preemptive strike". Look at all the "Who cares, it's not Ubuntu" comments on the recent openSUSE 11 beta story.
- mmcgrath, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Why would someone preinstall Fedora? Its not supported and moves faster then any other distribution... Way faster. It consistently has the newest software on it.
- halfabean, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I currently use Ubuntu, have used FC in the past and I wholeheartedly agree. Im not sure many ppl with a linux install would disagree.
- halfabean, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Ive never been a KDE fan, but this version looks interesting. Ill give it a fair shake at least.
- mmcgrath, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1How big is ubuntu's community anyway?
- estvir, on 04/20/2008, -2/+2Some Fedora 9 specific reasons would be handy. Buried otherwise.
- krische, on 04/20/2008, -2/+2I don't get the whole "enormous icon" thing.
- weizbox, on 04/19/2008, -1/+1KDE is the default unless they specify Gnome.
- octavian76, on 04/22/2008, -0/+0Fedora 9 is great. Loads easily, sees my hardware, upgrade was a breeze.
- kinghajj, on 04/20/2008, -3/+1KDE4 is supposed to be a good thing? KDE 4.0 was a huge letdown for me. When I first read about all the cool new features, I thought, "***** yes!!!", but then I learned that most of those features were "KDE 4," not necessarily "KDE 4.0." Maybe KDE 4.1 will be better, but for now I'll stick to my KDEmod 3.5.9.
- iRelinquish, on 04/20/2008, -5/+1I love linux, and ive tried many distro's. But what do you have against ubuntu?
- schestowitz, on 04/20/2008, -5/+1The key to success here is preinstallation by OEMs. Then the Freedom in Fedora won't be a barrier to novices.
- richman241, on 04/19/2008, -13/+4What are you talking about. Without Ubuntu, no one would know what linux is, let alone use it.
