- inactive, on 08/24/2008, -3/+117Buried for :
- listing crappy apps like Gnome Office
- not listing good apps like GIMP, Virtualbox or VLC
- not being on one page - Craga89, on 08/24/2008, -2/+75Here's some great ones they missed:
- Blender 3D http://www.blender.org/
- GIMP http://www.gimp.org/
- Banshee http://banshee-project.org/
- VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/
- Deluge http://deluge-torrent.org/
- rTorrent http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no/
Also, Gallery is not a "linux" app. As stated in the article it's a PHP script, so it can potentially run on any OS. - inactive, on 08/24/2008, -3/+63No Gimp? No Blender?
- Enron, on 08/25/2008, -4/+36You can't have an article about "killer" Linux stuff unless it includes ReiserFS.
- andsalvatierra, on 08/25/2008, -2/+28Meh, the title is misleading. These aren't killer apps, it's more like "Stuff Joe User can use on Linux that Windows has too" and alternatives. Where's the GIMP? Where's Blender? Inkscape? VLC? There are some more great programs that were excluded from this list.
Buried as lame. - Kral, on 08/25/2008, -1/+26Apparently, Lynx > Blender. Who'd have guessed? Thanks, random internet list of fail!
- atdigg, on 08/24/2008, -2/+17Firefox, Opera... yawn...
- Jericon, on 08/24/2008, -2/+17Good article, but I hate that they often had just the heading of a section (or the name of a program) as the last line on each page.

GCompris - diggerpleez, on 08/25/2008, -0/+14Apparently some type of load balanced server solution was not among these killer apps.
- afrothunderman, on 08/25/2008, -0/+13Photoshop runs in linux(using wine).
Ever tried it yourself to make a valid point? Guess not, need linux for that - richman241, on 08/24/2008, -1/+13can we try to get this all on one page?
- LZeppelinJ0, on 08/25/2008, -5/+16Ugh 7 pages, buried!
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11It's like the Top 25 Linux games that didn't have Sauerbraten, Cave Story, or Neverball but had like 23 lame ass FPS games.
(Almost all of them were based off of Quake 3.) - AgentPeay, on 08/25/2008, -2/+12I have to click 6 pages to see them all? I thought the internets were supposed to make my life easier, but now it's all this clicking - if I wanted to work I'd get a job.
- neko, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9(Edit: Stupid Digg comment box.) if you are going to list killer apps for linux you should include the ones which only run on linux, e.g. K3B, FUSE, Amarok (not exclusive for long though), Synaptic, Compiz, AWN, K9Copy, ... well okay I'm not going to sit here making an exhaustive list, I'll save that for when I've got a blog that I can cram full of adverts.
- MonoDede, on 08/25/2008, -2/+11504 Gateway Timeout?!
REALLY?! WOW! - compacho, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8- listing the same apps as every other "top linux apps" list
- AanaknSkywalker, on 08/25/2008, -1/+9I'm guessing that reliable web hosting isn't a killer app....
- dooooo, on 08/24/2008, -0/+8The guy should've done more research . Totem uses 'gstreamer' as a default backend and you can alternatively choose 'xine' . Kaffeine is the exact opposite as you can use 'gstreamer' as an alternative .
- ScotchInBox, on 08/25/2008, -1/+8Since techradar can't handle the digg effect and by just reading the comments so far, I'm really getting tired of the "best x amount of whatever" lists.
How about decent meaningful reviews of applications with comparisons to other products? Yes, I know it's "more work" and ideally someone would spend more than 8 hours work actually USING the software but it's actually meaningful for people looking for good information.
Buried based on a modicum of experience with all these "top x of x" lists. - tweedius, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7This list was pretty damn lame. The first, what, 5? Are Web Browsers, the next 4 or 5 are email clients....who cares. And Vim doesn't even make the list?
- MrTea, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7somehow apache didn't make this list?
- sadsadrobot, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6um.. This is from the website.
- srg13, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5"GIMP and Blender are highly regarded freeware programs for basic image editing and 3D modeling."
Open Source =/= freeware... And I'd hardly call Blender 'basic'... - gaminggeek, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5dont bother its a lame list of apps that everyone knows about
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6GIMP and Blender are highly regarded freeware programs for basic image editing and 3D modeling.
They're almost certainly available with most Linux Desktops. I've even seen a few professional things done with Blender + POVray. - shawnanigans, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4You aren't allowed to add Firefox to a list of killer apps. 1. Everyone knows about it. 2. It's cross platform so cant be a killer app.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4Thanks for the list of linux applications that come in a default install of many linux distrobustion. Burried as absolutely useless
- RoyalAwesome, on 08/25/2008, -1/+5No Mutt? No Mutt? No Mutt?
- zzzpoohzzz, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4this list pretty much sucks....
- Cyphase, on 08/25/2008, -3/+7Haha, aha, ha...
For those who don't know, Hans Reiser was convicted back in April for murdering his wife.
See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Reiser - speedyrev, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4I'm hoping someone else will dig through the 7 walls of text and post a cliff notes version in the comments.
- khedoros, on 07/31/2009, -1/+4不及格 (fail)
- desertpenquin, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4This list is a great example of why Linux is not able to take a true seat at the table. We allow our "kinda o.k." or "that's the best we got for that" to be crowned as the best. But it does also show us that perhaps our greatness is found in cross platform apps that got their start and power here on the Linux side of things. If this list had taken that into account then we would have seen an app like GIMP. But I still love me some VLC.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Then why the hell was Lynx included there?
It's certainly not useful for most typical users. - Nosyn, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3I figured, the page is loading extremely slow and I didn't read any of the site lol. But anways: I'm surprised "they" did not add VLC to "their" Multimedia players. :D
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3I'm not sure you know what an oxymoron is.
Even if all Linux apps sucks as you imply (which they don't) you could still list the "best" of all those ***** apps...
Maybe you're trying to imply there is no software for Linux. That would be ironic considering you're commenting on an article that lists something like two dozen pieces of Linux software. - werries, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3It did surprise me, VLC is absolute king of media players, imo.
- zeroshiftsl, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4Title should have read: "25 Random Linux Apps".
Buried for inaccurate. - agush, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2haha a mail order wife!
- LeviTheSmith, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2my favorite one is 502 Bad Gateway
- terrorpin, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3And not being "killer apps". Oh an email client, that's going to make 2009 the year of the Linux desktop.
- ace214, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Any linux program list that includes things like Firefox and Thunderbird is pretty mucha waste of time...
- Armitage2k, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Okay.. Killer Linux apps... include more than 4 browsers... and one of them is Lynx... really?!? Lame article, buried!
- FiP0, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Agreed. I don't know in which universe Lynx can be thought of as a "Killer App".
- mandel15, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1This is asolutely lame, common I was expecting 25 different killer apps... Seriously, I like he choice in Linux, I love my OpenSUsue installation. But reading about apps that can be found on other platforms (any mozilla fundation app) or a badly informed opinion of apps that every Linux user knows about is what I was not expecting from the title....
- duckyinc, on 08/25/2008, -0/+125 Apps that have been mentioned so many times that everyone is already using it
- nmanguy, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Wait, are they called killer apps because almost all of them come bundled with Ubuntu??
- PhailQuail, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1I actually really like Gedit, Kate is too much like an IDE, Notepad++ is kinda bloated and Mousepad is lacking (better than notepad.exe though).
I wouldn't call it a killer app, but I would really like a Windows port.
Amarok, on the other hand... -
