- Koush, on 05/18/2008, -34/+179Unless reason 27 will eventually be "it plays all games microsoft can without using wine", cant say im switching.
- possiblyneil, on 05/18/2008, -13/+97This is aimed towards technically proficient computer users not your average Joe Bloggs so it is not doing any good in promoting Linux for the masses. But I guess that is not the point of this article.
It preaches to the converted. - thewump, on 05/18/2008, -31/+103We know. Post to Microsoft section.
- cquinnd, on 05/18/2008, -2/+72Then it will be buried as a troll post, instead of as preaching to the choir.
People should drop the "why you should..." line of posts. Tell me how you use the OS or app that makes it worth your while, and let me make up my own mind. - modestmelody, on 05/18/2008, -6/+75Unfortunately, the average end user cares about nearly nothing on this list.
I actually think that beyond setup, the lack of hassle and the complete disregard one can have for hardware is a huge benefit.
I'm actually quite positive that my Grandma's ailing Dell could be saved with Linux and she could probably learn the new system far faster than she learned Windows XP after years of DOS. It's just not worth the effort for me right now to become tech support again. - inactive, on 05/18/2008, -15/+78I'm all for linux and all but it's almost tiring hearing the same crap over and over.
We get it. - RBrenner14, on 05/18/2008, -22/+821. Given
2. Average user has no need to modify source code.
3. There is just as much - most likely more - online support for Windows.
4. Vista won't stop being supported for many years, and by then your machine will most likely be obsolete.
5. See #4.
6. There are no forced upgrades to Windows. Why would they be a problem anyway?
7. This is only restating #1.
8. Another restatement of #1.
9. Okay, but if you're smart viruses/malware won't be problematic on Vista either.
10. Given.
11. This is a reason to use Windows, not Linux.
12. Unimportant to average user.

26. Defragmentation is not an inconvenience in any way to anyone. - JudgeMonkey, on 05/18/2008, -3/+50Being a jackass and trying to force your ways upon others is what the internet was built on. Now agree with me, dammit!

- modestmelody, on 05/18/2008, -3/+46I use Linux exclusively. I've personally found language support to be better on Linux.
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -35/+78How about 50 reasons to dump windows?
http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2007/08/13/50-reasons-to ... - inactive, on 05/18/2008, -35/+731 reason why I never dropped Windows:
Because no matter what Linux version I use, I always end up having to use windows. And if you happen to work in any language other than english: you're pretty much screwed.
Who honestly uses Linux exclusively? - svensko, on 05/18/2008, -6/+39I think the real question here is - How many Windows users on Digg are using legit copies and not ones they stole?
- Coestar, on 05/18/2008, -1/+32Who says Linux is English only? See here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Languages
And I use Linux near exclusively*. You just have to take the time to learn the alternative applications to the ones you're used to on Windows and/or OS X, such as GiMP, OpenOffice.org, InkScape, Blender, etc. They are fully featured and comparable to their mainstream counterparts. Fedora 9 is my primary, everyday OS.
* I prefer to be OS independent, and thus I have Windows dual-booting with Fedora 9 on my desktop, and a Mac Book running Leopard. I never "end up having to use windows" for anything work related, only for gaming. If I do fall back to anything, it's OS X, and only for finalization on videos which I recorded in Linux. However, I do so only because of application pre-knowledge (I have to get work done quickly sometimes and don't have time to learn something new every time, but I eventually will).
You merely have to take the time to learn. Many, many people use Linux as their exclusive desktop. - Scanner2006, on 05/18/2008, -4/+34I only use Linux
- diggsIt, on 05/18/2008, -2/+30I don't use Linux exclusively. I've been trying out OpenBSD/Unix, as well.
- AirRaven, on 05/18/2008, -5/+30Because it doesn't run everything, and a lot of what it *does* run still runs like a dog?
It's *good*, but it's not *that* good. - svensko, on 05/18/2008, -4/+29They give Ubuntu 4.5/5 stars for price? Really? Are they so incredibly lazy that they take half a point off because they have to check the md5sum and burn a CD for an ENTIRE OS?
Free should be 5/5. Because of that, I'm discrediting the rest of your article and I'm giving the entire PCmag website a 1/5 since it does not navigate the pages for me. - i4mt3hwin, on 05/18/2008, -13/+37I can surf the internet, play video games, type up word documents and watch movies on Windows. Why would I want to learn a whole new system to do the same exact thing?
And some things are just simply not easier on linux. Last time I used ubuntu (7.10) I tried setting up my second monitor, which required me to go into a file and edit it's contents. The result of which lead to a bluescreen type error on each boot that X failed to start.
I'm very happy with windows, stop trying to convince me to convert. - TheRealToma, on 05/18/2008, -12/+36Me. Only time I ever see Windows is when I get a call from a relative asking me to bail them out of a busted Windows system.
- SQLserver, on 05/18/2008, -2/+25Me.
I run all my normal apps, Linux is great. I can run Dreamweaver and Flash 8. Heck, I've even set up Safari on Linux. I run some fun 3D games, like Civ. III, Enemy Territory, Alien Arena, and Counter Strike. They were all really easy to set up with a sim
My printer, I just plug it in, and it works automatically.
My wireless card was like a 1 click install.
Linux beats Windows just so much. I love it. I hate, hate using any OS without wobbly windows and multiple desktops. These just make me so much more productive.
And I also love apt-get. It rocks, it is like any application at your fingertips.
I also love using Blender on Linux.
My favorite part is the true multitasking. On my 2 year old Dell XPS 400 I can be backing up 30 GB, Rendering an animation in Blender, with email, IM, and a few websites open, and be watching a movie at the same time. With the things on different workspaces, you don't even notice them.
Of course, I also love the feeling of power one has over your computer with Linux. Anything and everything is customizable. It's great.
I guess Linux works for some and doesn't work for others. - Kamujin, on 05/18/2008, -0/+22I use Linux when I have a choice. As I am paid to write software for multiple OS's, sometimes I don't have a choice.
Unlike many here. I don't hate Windows or OS X. They each have their good points. I don't hate to use them either. I just prefer Linux at this point.
The convergence of features in all leading OS's tells me that its time to move beyond the OS wars. Linux seems to be the best choice. - MrSarcasm, on 05/18/2008, -8/+29To sum up: free software, as in free speech. Which is a thing that not too many average joes care about.
- chingy1788, on 05/18/2008, -12/+32Sorry but I like my gaming and laziness to switch between OSes
- bieber, on 05/18/2008, -7/+25Why does it matter if they run without using Wine? Obviously, everything doesn't work perfectly in Wine now, but when Wine supports all your games, what will be wrong with it? Especially considering that when running apps that are fully supported, it's actually _faster_ than running them on Windows, in many cases...
- Athens101, on 05/18/2008, -0/+18Good logic. Those who charge tend to have more viruses.
- BlitzInferno, on 05/18/2008, -1/+19Me.
- troydoogle7, on 05/18/2008, -44/+60#26 you want to recreate the warm fuzzy pre windows 95 feeling by learning command line all over again.
- TBBucs, on 05/18/2008, -1/+16"Windows Task manager is not half as cool as Linux Htop." - So?
"Windows Notepad is not 1/1000th as cool as linux vi." - Third party apps.
"Microsoft office for windows is not free. Openoffice, which was originally developed for *nix platform is free on all platforms that it supports." - OpenOffice works on Windows too...
"Internet Explorer is prone to vulnerabilities more than any other mainstream web browser." - Firefox works on Windows.
Seriously, Linux is doing just fine without people like this trying to convince other people to use it. There are some legitimate arguments for switching to Linux, but most of these aren't it. - sk11, on 05/18/2008, -4/+19Read the comments, some people still perpetuate decade old myths about linux. A lot of people obvious don't "get it."
- Lebrun, on 05/18/2008, -1/+16I do. Only Linux on all my machines.
- Kamujin, on 05/18/2008, -4/+19Did he really just try to suggest that a console is a better game platform then a PC?
Sorry even a game that struggles under Wine still out performs a console. - beermad, on 05/18/2008, -1/+15I use Linux exclusively. On my desktop computer, my two servers (one of which has currently been running uninterrupted for 423 days) and my Nokia pocket computer.
I had to use Windows when I was working and it was always easier to achieve what I wanted on Linux than on Windows. And whereas Windows was always crashing on me, Linux rarely does. - matroosje, on 05/18/2008, -2/+16I do,
and my wife,
and my son,
and soon: my mother! - ArthurSucks, on 05/18/2008, -0/+13I run it on all my computers and I've set it up for my Nieces and my Nephew.
- YamiJim, on 05/18/2008, -2/+15.....i can't figure out of your being sarcastic or not......
- svensko, on 05/18/2008, -0/+13Until it crashes, killing everything inside.
- SQLserver, on 05/18/2008, -3/+151. I've run Photoshop fine on Linux.
2. Paintshop pro is reported to easily work in WINE.
3. Office is easily installed in Linux.
4. Office is easily installed in Linux
5. Crossover Office should work.
6. I'm running Flash 8 right now on Ubuntu, took about 10 minutes to set up.
7. Woa. Don't know about that one, honestly.
8. I've run all of Adobe's Creative Suite fine.
9. I have Dreamweaver on this Linux PC here.
10. Never heard of it.
11. Maya, Blender? IF you must, you can run it slowly through WINE
12. C4D 9 will have native support but early version will still require wine.
13. I believe there is a native version for Linux.
14. Reported to work under WINE
15. www.logmein.com, or you can use VNC to connect to other Windows, Linux, or Mac computers.
16. http://digg.com/linux_unix/CDemu_Daemon_Tools_for_ ...
17. ISO recording is built into GNOME.
18. True, but there are several good alternatives, too.
19. There's a native Shareaza linux version.
20. What? You bought a Zune. Unfortunately, you cannot connect to it in Linux. Blame Microsoft for their encryption.
21. Why would you need nLite without Windows?
22. Hmm... Should probably work in WINE.
23. Not really neccessary without Windows...
24. Gparted seems like a better alternative anyway.
25. www.zamzar.com, or you can use FFMEG or Transcode
Well, the majority of your apps run on windows fine. Only a few require alternatives. Those that do are often small stuff like FolderSizes, which I believe Gparted is a much easier, better alternative to. - Wakuko, on 05/18/2008, -1/+13I do use Ubuntu
and Mac OSX
That's all I need - Planets, on 05/18/2008, -22/+34How about you tell me when Linux can run Crysis flawlessly? Thanks.
- barius, on 05/18/2008, -1/+13Yes, I do all the time. Wine runs Civ 4 and its' add-on packs 100%.
- Wetzilla, on 05/18/2008, -2/+14And which operating system would be better?
- danomagnum, on 05/18/2008, -1/+13Do you know how many times they said free in that article? 38.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 05/18/2008, -5/+17Coming from a site that has Linux in its title...
- SemiSarcastic, on 05/18/2008, -10/+21But can I play Civilzation IV on it?
- mpete510, on 05/18/2008, -1/+12I use Linux exclusively at home, and bail out coworkers when they run into Windows problems because I am the IT guy.
- DangerCollie, on 05/18/2008, -1/+12I'd argue that a user doesn't have to be particularly proficient these days. A Ubuntu install is a no brainer. If PC's shipped with the current version, I bet fully half of PC users wouldn't even notice. If Photoshop, Illustrator and Quickbooks installed and ran you could raise that figure to 80%.
- modestmelody, on 05/18/2008, -1/+12http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=a ...
It appears to have a gold rating for the newer versions of Wine.
So yes, you can. -
