- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+79They should ***** hire the XBMC team.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+61My aunt from Nintendo called and said your cousin doesn't exist.
- OverThere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59Please be true, and get X-Box Media Center on it.
Best media client I've ever used. - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45I'm with you on that one...XBMC blows the 360 media extender out of the water. I still have my xbox hooked up next to the 360 because the interface and speed are so much better than microsoft's own garbage. They should take a cue from the xbmc team.
- kunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Here's the video on Youtube. The full version is really long. Happy new year all!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AGAohJuovY - tobb555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19The only reason Sony has Linux on the PS2/3 is to get past European laws with game consoles being taxed more then computers, so Sony puts linux on them and calls them PCs.

:) -its 563mb and the server is moderately fast - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Now, I'm not saying that I don't want the 360 to be hacked, I love XBMC as much as everyone else, but heres one of the problems I see:
IF we're able to run a different dashboard based off linux and load backups, there will still be a problem on that many 360 games call upon the Guide for text entry, acheivements, and other things. Withing access to those fuctions, wouldn't the game crash?
So until they can figure out how to respond to the calls to the dashboard that the games request, I think it'll be a long time before we're running backups from a homebrew dashboard.
Just my two cents. - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13If the 360 and HD-DVD is cracked, I'm throwing down before MS gets a chance to update their hardware.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"
So, if you want to have 1 360 for online gamnie and 1 for XBMC (that never contacts the net again), then that's fine.
Or you could have one PS3."
A) You've obviously never even _SEEN_ XBMC.
B) You can't even BEGIN to compare the offering of the PS3 to the 360 at this point. (And if Sony keeps losing exclusives, you'll be hard pressed to in 2007)
C) Sony is as evil as people perceive Microsoft to be I avoid giving them my money whenever possible. (Mainly because of an abysmal track record with their products, but also because of rootkits, questionable business practices and their penchant for forcing new, unnecessary standards down consumers' throats.) - KotZer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16If this is real, it is the most exciting news of 2006 !!! Homebrew on xbox360 are coming
- modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12As long as people can't cheat over Xbox Live then I don't care.
- muggs413, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11you bet it is , ccc is one of the first and most respected hacker group in the world...
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@HappyScrappy
Ya like I'll take the PS3 media abilities over XBMC. You've obviously never used, or you're too blank to understand what is great about it. - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15In other news, my hairdresser's dog-walker said that you stink.
- techAU, on 10/23/2008, -2/+10Is it just me or all that happened in that vid was a Linux and Mac logo moved around the screen... this could simply just be a DVD..??
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm baffled. I don't know what to say. I'd like to hear more diggers weigh in on the authenticity of this story. Is 23c3 reputable?
- sephiro499, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I've gotta say the flash video linked shows absolutely nothing. You just see a mac and Linux logo float around on the screen, is that the xbox or another computer?
Badly wanting the xbox 360 to run home-brew I WANT this to be true, but they've gotta post more information and or explain what exactly is taking place in that video. - Sigvard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_Computer_Club
- ChipMonkStyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8XBMC is an AWESOME program.
I bought a XBOX in 2002, its a version 1 actually, its been awesome all these years. It wasn't until last year that i learned about softmodding (didn't want to try a modchip, not that smart with soldering and crap). Now i run XBMC as my main dashboard, and i use it EVERYDAY to play media/emulators/scripts etc.
If this is true, i will definately get myself a 360. I have been thinking about getting another xbox 1 for downstairs to use as another media center. SMB shares for the win!
The only thing that i dislike about my XBOX 1 is that it doesn't have enough RAM to play 1080p on my high def. If the XBOX 360 gets hacked, and XBMC is rewritten for it, i sure as hell will be getting a couple consoles for around the house. - Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9*****, digg me down. Just found out that you get the Microsoft logo if you have it set to autoboot games in the settings. Oh well, interesting bit of information I learned about my Xbox 360 today.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"debian" ... "wmv"
Someone please explain how this happened... - NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That looks like a savegame exploit with Peter Jackson's King Kong for 360. So Microsoft made the same mistakes as the old Xbox? Nice work Microsoft.
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Oh, I'm sorry but I can't even rebut this. You're dumb. It's not worth explaining to someone that doesn't understand the benefits of the hardware or the homebrew scene in general.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"In that case they would just rewrite their own dashboard with that in it"
Not necessarily. They'd just need to patch the dash and prevent it from being updated. Once you eliminate the signing requirement, it opens up all sorts of possibilities.. - sardiax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you can put xbmc on an xbox and use it on live. you just need a modchip with a stealth boot option.
that said considering they'd be comparable in price, and owning both systems. i'd take 2 360s over a ps3. - EvilCowSan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@guyhersh.
You can already run backups with modded dvd firmware. This development is for people that want to do semi legit stuff like homebrew. Legit in the sense that you aren't stealing games from the developers, it's still probably a breach of the eula. - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"They should ***** hire the XBMC team."
XBMC is fantastic, but its built on (and is) open source technology.... thats probably why its so good.. but obviously microsoft aren't going to do that, and there's no way the xbox media center guys can re create everything from scratch (the other option being to use internal microsoft code, but then we end up at the same problem... an inferior product.) - xbox720, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hi there,
just in case, here are a few pictures from the lecture showing the "hack" (just pics!)

Have fun :) - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And really, if it's needed, it will "mysteriously" appear in one way or another.
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Except that the hypervisor is * virtually * immune to buffer overflow attacks. I use asterisks because.. well, they did something obviously.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What's your damage, heather?
The 360 a specialized system for outputing to a TV with HARDWARE VIDEO SCALING and HIGH-END GRAPHICS capabilities (among other features) that are "turning a profit" because they are being produced on a massive scale. Factor in the small form-factor and the quiet design and that gives you a device that is EXACTLY the type of appliance people would want to hack. - Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6anybody know where we can get more video from the 23c3 conference (i am curious to see the wii security presentation, as well as the ps3's)
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Man I can't wait for more info how they deal with the hypervisor.
- Fabre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We already know King Kong uses unsigned shaders, so it wouldn't surprise me if they had left something else unsigned that would allow a buffer overflow attack in.
- SgtQuackers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6In that case they would just rewrite their own dashboard with that in it
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@BuddhaChu
thanks!.. too bad the filenames don't represent th content of the video all that accurately. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@HappyScrappy
It is possible to play xbox live on your modified xbox without getting banned. The only difference is that you set up a shadow partition for your MS approved dashboard and use nkpatcher to mount it on C.
Xbox mods have been better in the past thanks to better hackers, (and an internal hard drive). I trust that the 360 hackers will still do a better job than PS3 hackers. The 360 games linup is so much better and these two things just blow away the ps3. - BuddhaChu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The directory is browseable and there's a bunch of others to pick from.
http://debian.tu-bs.de/mirror/ccc/23C3-mitschnitte/ - artanis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hmm. I would really like to know what he was doing between the "Loading" and bouncing image screens. Did he have a keyboard connected to the 360? Did he have a remote shell to a tiny linux image booted by the hacked savegame? This video is not nearly detailed enough.
- Misson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://video.google.es/videoplay?docid=-5136252806353451439&q=23c3
The first seconds are bad but then its ok. - m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You're the one that wants to play games. Go troll somewhere else.
- artanis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The video is complete. What happened was this:
1. anonymous enters with a bag
2. he pulls out a 360 and sets it up
3. 360 boots, launches game "King Kong"
4. displays "Loading" as if loading a save file, or maybe a menu / gui data file since he didn't ever actually do any input
5. screen goes white
6. no display change for 10 seconds? the presenter looks like he is doing something, like typing on a keyboard,
but the view is obstructed
7. a box containing the text "xbox 360", a tux image, an OSX logo and the text "Coming soon" bounce around
the display for a couple seconds
8. end of presentation - m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@HappyScrappy
It's the DVD-ROM drive that's noisy. A deficiency that hacking can address. Wait a minute, aren't you one of those trolling Sony fanboys?? Get the ***** out of here. Go load YellowDog on your PS3. - chaos386, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would guess the 't' stands for "tag", meaning day, and the 's' stands for "saal", meaning hall.
- adamcurtis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's got to start somewhere GuyHersh, and this just brings home-brew 360 apps one step closer to fruition.
- Talus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh..and people will actually start buying copies of King Kong for the 360 ;)
- AaronX2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it looks like it's some sort of an overflow hack (like the game save hacks for the original XBox using 007 Agent under fire, Mech Assult, and Splinter Cell) using King Kong by ubisoft.
- artanis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3HappyScrappy is indeed a troll. There is no way the 360 is louder than the tv, or any pc. The only time I hear any noise from the 360 is when the dvd drive spins up.
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for helping explain culbeda, I'm not very patient.
