and you get
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu%2C+XP%2C+Vis ... - whahaa, on 09/29/2008, -4/+26so 2009 will definitely be the year of linux on the desktop?
for real this time? - Mononuclear, on 09/29/2008, -4/+24OMG!!on!!eleven!! 2009 is it!! I know it!1!! I know I was wrong in 2000, and 2001, and 20002, and 20003, and 2004, and 2005, and 2006, and 2007, and 2008, but really guys.. 2009 is the year of linux!!!!11!!11!one!1!eleven!11!!
- atarimasta, on 09/29/2008, -0/+19More importantly:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu%2C+paris+hil ... - 10goto10, on 09/29/2008, -0/+16It must be because of all the "200x is the year of"-articles.
- Awspire, on 09/29/2008, -5/+18Whats this prove? That an OS with a 1% market share has tons of search queries for people seeking support on how to get half their hardware to work. I know I've done a ***** of Ubuntu* google queries seeking help on how to get the simplest stuff to work, only to find out it simply wont work in linux.
Buried as lame linsux propaganda. - kd420, on 09/29/2008, -1/+13Yeah, I know it's been said before about google trends but I have to say it again; you have to think about the real world when looking at this data. I'd say close to 90% of windows installs are from a purchased pc, so there would be no need for people to search for it. However, at least we know ubuntu is growing year over year. I also found the Linux vs. Ubuntu one interesting:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu%2C+linux&cta ... - pHr34kY, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10I like the way that Ubuntu searches have peaks each April and October...
- dinki, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10Yeah, didn't you get the memo? Current year + 1 = year of linux on the desktop
It's kind of like the mantra that the Earth only has 10 years until it is doomed unless we do something now! - benologist, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10The letters tell you what the spikes are.
Microsoft launches Windows Vista
ComputerWeekly.com - Jan 30 2007 - Nephersir7, on 09/29/2008, -0/+9Want to see something REALLY disapointing? replace ubuntu with linux, and remove the windows. http://www.google.com/trends?q=Linux%2C+XP%2C+Vist ...
Is ubuntu more popular than linux?
You could also look at that and wonder what happened in 2006 : http://www.google.com/trends?q=linux%2C+mac&ctab=0 ... - rrife, on 09/29/2008, -1/+10Wait a minute I thought 2000 was the year of linux, then 2001, then 2002........then 2007, 2008, etc.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -1/+10the year of linux... along with chinese democracy and duke nukem
- aidave, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8No one searches for "evolutionISM". Try "evolution" and you get the proper stats:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=creationism%2C+evol ... - megaton, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8Hmmm... DOS, ftw?
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu%2C+dos&ctab= ... - yoblin, on 09/29/2008, -0/+7More people googling ubuntu? I know I only google my OS when things are going wrong.... *ducks*
- ubuntu user ;) - 4DFX, on 09/29/2008, -2/+8That's still very good actually. I expected the blue graph to simply disappear.

http://www.google.com/trends?q=freedom%2C+liberty% ... - infernal6, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6because linus isn't god
- Awspire, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6Ya, right. More like 99% of Ubuntu hits are from those seeking support, and 90% of Vista hits are Linux users seeking Vista cracks.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+62009: The year I continue to use Windows because everything works, it never crashes, and there are assloads of drivers.
- GetItBuilt, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5Don't forget the most important:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu%2C+obama&cta ... - twiztidsinz, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5Man.. I remember the catfood surge of Feb '07...
Then came the crash.... it was utter pandemonium. - twiztidsinz, on 09/29/2008, -1/+6Was it you?
I'm betting it was you....
Yeah.. its you. - PuffyC, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5If you just look at Linux, Windows and Mac, Linux is going into the tank:

Not a year goes by without someone declaring 200x as the year of open source, yet if anything, it's moving the other way. - sindrit, on 09/29/2008, -2/+7FAIL: http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu,+Vista&ctab= ...
- shutaro, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5Every year is the year of open source!

or wait.. a viable source... DIGG
http://digg.com/linux_unix/2008_Year_of_the_Linux_ ...
Or here, when the Ubuntu founder states "It's been the next year for the last 5 or 6" (in '07).
It's being used more, but give me a ***** break. - burketo, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3http://www.google.com/trends?q=4chan%2C+digg&ctab= ...
that one gave me a migraine - ethana2, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Freddie mac... bernie mac...
that's why I use 'apple' in those.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu%2C+apple%2C+ ... - ventralnet, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3So is this a bad thing? People searching more and more for issues they are having?
- evil-doer, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3i was gonna say the same thing. normally searches are for when youre having problems. why would someone be looking up windows xp? exactly. if anything this shows how problematic ubuntu is compared to windows.
- jhandfield, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2I get the feeling a significant portion of the commenting public doesn't understand exactly what these graphs represent...
- RemoteSojourner, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Why would I do that? Removing Windows means it includes the results for Office XP and tons of other products which use XP in their name.
- dorkdork777, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2He DOES care about Linux, he's one of the main developers of the kernel!
The only closed source apps I can think of that can't be easily replaced are drivers (if they count, but they should be FOSS) and games. Mainstream games shouldn't be open, IMO - it would be too easy to make hacks then play online. - ethana2, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2And then they got their panties all in a bunch, put Solaris under the CDDL, and sold ZFS and dtrace to Apple in spite.
- oscarolim, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2So 2009 will be the year of Linux... ok. Where did I hear this before? 2008? 2007? 2006?
I like Linux, i use Ubuntu, but lets not get over ourselves. - Woodman73, on 09/29/2008, -1/+3The YEAR OF OPEN SOURCE always seems to be next year.
- motang, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Year of the open source pretty much was when Microsoft was scrambling to update IE 6 as Mozilla Firefox was kicking the crap out of it (it still is IMHO ;-) ).
http://www.google.com/trends?q=firefox%2C+internet ... - rfdparker2002, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Yes, and in addition vista is a common dictionary word, and XP/xp has other uses.
Of course Ubuntu is an African word, but seems to be very rarely used in that context today. - carrtoonist, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1This is because new ubuntu users need to constantly refer to google for info. Ie: ubuntu howto install flash, ubuntu howto divx, etc
Every linux-newbie to ubuntu has personally added a couple hundred of those queries into google. - BobCFC, on 09/29/2008, -2/+3Denial of Service

Obama FTW - inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1The latest numbers I've seen, Linux is running on 7% of the PCs and Apple runs on 10% of the desktops out there. The real question should be, is Apple in danger of slipping to number 3?
- PhailQuail, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Cerialthriller: you should compare "Windows" to "Linux" for that to be fair.
- dougle, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1No your mum said she's gonna marry anyone still on XP.
- megaton, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Thank you, Captain Obvious.
