- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -12/+103There's no "year of...".
Linux is gaining market share in many sectors (mobiles, servers, HPC, even desktop), but it's not an /overnight/ success. It's gradual and it's going very well. - trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -11/+93*sigh* I guess some people will never learn.
- teonancatl, on 10/11/2007, -4/+54We have been hearing every year will be the year since around 2004. Its a case of companies leading the way, the average person on the street doesnt understand the benefits of other operating systems and feel comfortable just using what they use elsewhere. Once the companies implement it on their desktops and Joe Public is forced to use it is when the big interest in getting it on their home computers will start.
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -10/+52Are you kidding me. This is the perfect environment to observe fanboys in their native habitat. Pull up a chair and some pop corn.
- bewareofmoose, on 10/11/2007, -12/+48"Will you finally break down and install Linux next year? The answer may surprise you."
The answer: No.
Oh, my god. It's... such a shock. I need to sit down. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+44Every single year since like 2000 has been 'the year of linux'. Same with Apple. Neither of which has ever been true.
Realistically, I don't think the 'year of linux' can even start until 2010. The OS needs to be as good and self maintained as possible for the idiot home user (see Windows and OSX) before it can sink into the market beyond just IT professionals. - Noctem, on 10/11/2007, -1/+292004? lol, you must be new to the intertubes. We've been hearing it since at LEAST '97-'98.
- wedderburn, on 10/11/2007, -5/+312008+n
- tdrizzle, on 10/11/2007, -31/+52Linux is not desktop ready.
The problem is that I have no motivation to switch. There is really nothing I care about doing on linux that I can't in windows. - bobbyi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20"We have been hearing every year will be the year since around 2004."
I started reading slashdot in '99 and they have declared the "Year of Linux on the Desktop" pretty much every year since then. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+27XXXX, the year of the linux desktop!
- donkz, on 10/11/2007, -10/+28maybe when Ron Paul is gonna become a president
- kipmartin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20there is no evidence this is true. none. show me data proving that. believe me, Vista is causing no mass exodus from MS--people are just opting to stay with XP, which works quite well.
- bffoley, on 10/11/2007, -6/+22Linux is the Desktop OS of tomorrow, and always will be
- f0dder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Of course he's happy.. you get to be his tech support buddy for life. Grats
- sganser, on 10/11/2007, -11/+25I just wiped my friends laptop that had vista, and installed UBUNTU, he's never been happier with it. He knows NOTHING about computers, and had no problems with it.
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15can 2009 be the year of nothing? because seriously, I'm sick of my years being of something.
- mcflynnthm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17They're starting early this year. I feel we don't see these [current_year+1]: Year of the Linux Desktop articles till Q4.
- EnderMB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I guarantee that in a year from now there will be an article on Digg titled "2009: Year of the Linux Desktop".
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+22Lets see, today we have a decade being the year of the linux desktop.
- EnderTheThird, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Even as an Ubuntu only user for 1.5 years, I grow a little tired of articles like this. Articles proclaiming it's "The Year of the Linux Desktop" aren't going to make it happen. Things like Dell's support are helping, but Linux already is a Windows alternative/replacement. It's just a matter of time before more people know that such a choice exists. But those people sure as hell aren't reading articles like this.
In the meantime, I have my popcorn ready for the resulting discussion on here... - th3heretic, on 10/11/2007, -5/+162004, Year of the linux desktop. 2005 Year of the linux desktop. 2006 Year of the linux desktop. 2007. Year of the linux desktop 2008. Year of the linux desktop 2009. Year of the linux desktop. 2010 Year of the linux desktop. 2011 Year of the linux desktop.... .... ... 2120 Year of the linux desktop...
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1140 million copies sold in the first 4 months. Yeah they are just running for the hills.
Vista is a very good OS. If it was Ubuntu with all those features you'd be creaming yourself. - vafada, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13welcome to 5 years ago
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11int i = 0;
while(true){
int year = 1998 + i;
printf("%d is the year of Linux on the desktop", year);
i = i + 1;
}
/*stupid digg won't allow me to print a newline*/ - Langford, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9The real "Year of Linux" will not come on all at once, it will have to get here slowly. One day we may look back and realize that something has changed. Essentially the "Year of Linux" will be the year we have it and decide to stop trying to predict it.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9There's no such thing as the correct folders.
- sneakerelph, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I know a whole bunch of people who would probably benefit from Ubuntu, however I don't want them to be stuck when they go to the store and buy a program (Nero, or Print Shop or something), bring it home and then call me when they can't get it to install. I'll have to explain that these programs don't work, and my friend will just probably be like "PUT WINDOWZ BACK ON.. Linux sucks if it can't run these!"
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Better driver support, more software, games (if you care), etc.
- LycoLoco, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13To be honest I've tried Linux no fewer than ten times using tons of distros and while it does offer more security, I'm a very picky user and not having the ability to use programs such as slickrun and mediamonkey (show me a single music player that allows sorting based on folder structure instead of by ID3 tags, and I'll seriously consider switching again - Amarok's implementation doesn't work either) or having to reboot to play games is just annoying. I'm sure that I'll try it again in the future, but right now I'll stick with XP because it's what I know and what I can use most efficiently. Also, being a more savvy user, I'm not worried about spyware or viruses, so no biggie there either.
- Novagenesis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Wait'll he starts programming COMPILERS on it..
Oh ***** wait...apparently the poster said the friend knows NOTHING about computers... - trying2hide, on 10/11/2007, -10/+18I looked at Vista. It's like MS moved everything. (again).
I am saving my dollars and doing Linux at home as well as work. - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8That's how awesome Linux is.
- adam.skinner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Yeah, I can't get enough of those $5 Wal-Mart games...
- P4NNY, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Well, maybe if this will continue till 2010, we will have the "Decade of Linux".
- adam.skinner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7http://amarok.kde.org
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7...and there, my friend, is the reason why Linux has such a hard time catching on.
- Novagenesis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8It'd be really cool if you could give the Linux community a reputation by proving you know how to spell "Windows".
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Vista is "repulsive"? With a decent system it is actually a really nice OS. I prefer it over XP now.
- maehem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+62009: The Year for OpenSolaris! :-) I decided to skip right past Linux.
- Tweakedenigma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'll agree (and I'm a Linux fan-boy). "The year of the Linux desktop" as its called will happen at some random time when Linux is above 15% IMHO. It will more then Likely happen quickly and without much notice and not when anyone has guessed. Although what is more important is the year that Windows Loses its monopoly status and I think that is coming quicker then some think as According to new numbers on the Rise http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2007/06/mac_market_math.html & Linux being estimated at a much larger number then once thought http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6506027.stm it seems the time is getting closer. This is not to say that Windows is gonna die off they will probably hold on to at least 50% share into 2010 but the winds of change do seem to be here but this is not a Factor of Linux alone.
- AlexFerny, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Agreed, and iTunes does not work on Linux, so there is no such thing as iTunes :)
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11no you need to get laid first.
- Novagenesis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The windows fanboys have only one weapon. The John Smith with no natural computer talent and 5-7 Microsoft-Specific computer courses under his belt, a job based around .psd files, and is insanely into gaming.
Everyone else has a good reason to at least experiment in Linux (both computer newbie and computer expert). The newbie won't know the difference unless they're aware how less often adware hits them.
The expert will probably have a dozen OSes around.
Course the year of the Linux Desktop, if it happens, will coincide with the year of Linux Gaming - subliminalurge, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8"Our issues are not due to the system, but due to companies not having open spec or having drivers period."
Which is entirely irrelevant to a user whose hardware works under one OS and not under the other. - Novagenesis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Do you want a cookie?
- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -0/+52009 will be the year of the Hotpocket. Just you wait.
- missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I'm switching to Ubuntu in a few months when I get a new computer. Sure, we hear this 'Year of the Linux Desktop' every year but this time I can imagine Linux will actually become slightly more mainstream. With how drastically different Vista is, people are going to have to learn a new OS either way. Being so accustomed to Windows was really the only thing holding me back from switching, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this.
- natenovs, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12ive been using vista for 7 months, and its great. i dont think its dumbed down. the fact that most of the work is taken care of for you so you dont waste time editing conf files or banging around in bash doesnt mean its dumbed down.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12Maybe, but iTunes blows ass. It's the RealPlayer of this decade.
