From the picture in the article it looks more like a laptop than a PDA but I could be wrong.

Either the picture is wrong, or the dimensions are wrong.
For scale, an ethernet port is about 12mm across (just guessing). Look at the ethernet port on the side of the laptop in the picture. You're telling me only 8 of them lined up side-to-side would fit down the side of that thing? I call BS. That thing's a lot bigger than 120x100x30. - Salviati, on 10/11/2007, -2/+70This laptop sounds exactly like what I've been waiting for. I travel a lot, and I mainly need a computer-ish device that lets me hop on the web, backup my pictures, and be ultra-portable. This thing fits that description perfectly plus it can load Ubuntu, is super-cheap, and may be able to use Skype! I wish they released the availability schedule, 'cause I want one NOW.
Is it just me or does this thing look like the Nintendo DS's big brother? - trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -33/+99For those of you who can't visualize in metric... the size is: 4.7 x 3.9 inches. (ipod: 4" x 3.2")
This isn't a laptop, this is a PDA. You'd have to be 4 to use this as a laptop.
Sounds like the potential to be a decent PDA, but flash prices need to seriously drop for this thing to be cost effective and still sport enough memory. - JCSaint, on 10/11/2007, -15/+70You get what you pay for.
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -2/+51"Having a MacBook Pro: Priceless."
Actually they start at $1999 USD. - mchristiansen, on 10/11/2007, -2/+43Imagine a Beowulf Cluster of these.... oops. Sorry. Wrong web site.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+41laptop, cheap, linux... im in!
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/11/2007, -1/+40Could you at least read the linked article before pasting in one of your standard responses?
This story is about a cheap laptop running Linux that will be available at the stated price for everyone--not just people who have a government paying half their cost, all over the world. - Salviati, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36@donwilson2: "If you guys actually did any reading, you'd actually notice that the harddrive is only 2gb in size."
All the other articles I have seen on this laptop report 4/8/16 GB hard drives (obviously at different prices). This is the first on I've seen that lists 2 GB as an option. - nomechingues, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30i want one now i just hope it can handle ubuntu or kubuntu
- Scyth3, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32An Apple IIe does more than the Foleo....
Oregon Trail FTW? - englishganxta, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30"Congratulations, you have been selected to recieve 2 free Ipod Nanos!"
Aargh SHUT UP! - lithuin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30Yeah I had my earphones turned up listening to Paul Simon when it came on.
There is no excuse for talking ads. Unless your ad is an ad for talking ads. Then it's OK. - ronintetsuro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23"Being a doucheclot - worthless."
There's some things the internet can't hide. For everything else, there's STFU. - pevensen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22And it is cheaper and probably does more than the Foleo!
- tadarnold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Judging by the size of the USB ports and Ethernet port on the side, I'd guess the dimensions quoted in the article must mean the size of the screen rather than the size of the whole unit. However, it still seems quite small.
- Nadare, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21The dimensions are wrong.

It's a "MID", Mobile Internet Device, a machine positioned somewhere between Smartphones and Laptops for people who like to have the net on the go, since none of the phone companies seem interested in making this kind of device. That's what Intel's calling 'em anyways.
Personally, I like this design better:

Makes the Palm Foleo look so, so terribly bad in comparison. - musbou, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21"Another version will be available for $299, but nobody could tell us what the difference between the two models is."
The difference is Windows XP
Source: http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS9292516116.html - Salviati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Yes, according to other articles it can run Win XP and Linux. :)
- Salviati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19@ schestowitz: " It's nothing but an attempt by Intel and Microsoft to take down the not-for-profit project"
This article has a different take on that: http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/05/asus-new-eee-pc-701-joins-the-laptop-lite-fray-with-a-bang/
I doubt it is backed by MS, since it is ADVERTISED to run XP or Linux (And in their press photos they actually have it running OS X!). From the article: "A spokesperson from Asus told us that the notebook would come with "an office suite that's compatible with MS Office", though he refused to confirm or deny whether that meant OpenOffice." I also doubt MS would support spreading any other Office suite but their own. - violentvinyl, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22@llda (#7053300)
Pedantic prick. - danielbachhuber, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20When is it coming out?

- williamdyer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18You'll be wanting the rubber keyboard model.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23Why do you think Intel and Ubuntu are playing footsy under the table? This is exactly where they're going in the next 5 years, and Microsoft's lost the steam to deliver on these devices. Intel's betting on Apple and the various Linux communities to pick up the slack.
Oh, and before time runs out, here's a better shot of the size of this thing.

"You get what you pay for."
That is universally not true in technology. I paid big bucks for a voodoo laptop and its crap. I paid 90 bucks for a used ipod and its great! soooOoooOo nah.. you don't get what you pay for.. you should just always have low expectations ( expect for the iphone.. Im sure thats worth it.) - Takuro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Worst photoshop job I've ever seen. You could've at least tried to line up the edges so it wouldn't look so lop-sided.
Since when did linux-based devices get BSOD. - ryansmith18, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18@ donwilson2

Seriously? You rip all your music in a format that takes up 100mb on average? That's like ultra quality. Like better than original quality. You could get a job with a record company you know... - drewskyjones, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16I was thinking leave it in the bathroom so I can read Digg and the news, etc, while I'm "making a deposit."
- noctumfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14could be a great car-puter IMO
- universal12, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Thats amazing, I wouldn't mind investing in one of these machines. Beats paying 2000 dollars for a machine that may break down on you. Thats like paying for a repair.

Earliest these things could ship is Christmas. The chip running them is a Pentium-M variant called Silverthorne intended for the MID/UMPC market, but it's manufactured on the 45-nm process node, which means it'll take second place in precedence behind Penryn. On the other hand, these things are going to cost around $50-$75, for 600MHz-1GHz performance, and extremely good battery life (it should have a fairly small TDP, around 5-10W, but more details aren't available yet). - dracflamloc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Those things are so annoying. I wish all those chinese hackers who so like to break into the US computers would break into whatever company runs those ads.
- unselftitled, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Firefox has an add-on for flash ads, lets you choose whether or not you want to seem them instead of being bombarded.

I could take notes/browse web/email in the field. Honestly I have been dying for a $250 11" or smaller device that can run FireFox, Thunderbird and Open Office and thats it!

- johndi, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19Negroponte crippled the OLPC on purpose, so that it would have no black market value. Sadly, Intel is correct when they call it a gadget. I applaud his good intentions, but the man grew up so ridiculously rich that he is out of touch with the reality of poverty.

- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10The processor should be more than up to the task to play any standard def media or below. It's just a really, really tiny reprint of a Pentium-M, and should clock between 600MHz and 1GHz (single core, about the die size of 1/4th of Penryn).
http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20070417corp_a.htm for more details. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11oh, ffs. Negroponte doesn't get an exclusive on low cost notebooks, no matter how noble his cause may be. Not everything is a conspiracy against him.
