I kid b/c I love. ;) - bieber, on 09/17/2008, -1/+16Considering that the Linux kernel doesn't _have_ a gui, that's pretty impressive :/

- Darkhacker, on 09/17/2008, -1/+12RMS didn't decide to use Linux. He was trying to build a microkernel but the project was taking too long and turning into vaporware. It was everyone else who combined Linux with GNU.

- Hermmunster, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6You have to be a blatant idiot, right? Linux is a great platform. 30+ million users world wide use it. That's a massive investment in an OS. When you consider Windows first several iterations of use of it, this so totally dwarfs it. When you consider the criminal monopolistic practices used by Microsoft to force other choices down you'd understand how utterly stupid your comment sounds.
Your comments are precisely why we need to cut that criminal monopolist down to size. Why we need to reintroduce competition, because if there was real competition in the OS market there'd be no room for your comments. When you consider that Linux has about 1-2% of the market currently that should tell you that something is dramatically wrong in the world of OSes. No one company should ever achieve 90% market share on anything worldwide. We aren't talking in your home town or in your state, or even in your region. We are talking world wide. To have 90% market share world wide indicates a vast failure of the system that thrives on competition.
Imagine a government that has oversight on a criminal monopolist that has been convicted and that has 90% of the world market. Now imagine that same government spying on average citizens with systems in place that are able to read our mail and listen to our calls. You don't think that same government when it sees the potential of a world of computers that they might not trade punishment and regulation for access?
So, don't give us ***** about how many people have chosen to not be under the yoke of that type of system.
And frankly many of us don't really care whether others think there are so many linux articles. It means that Linux is becoming more powerful, is getting the press. And honestly I feel that way when I hear the word "Microsoft". Altogether there's far too much out there about Windows and the convicted monopolist. - johndavidjack, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6^^^
You mean Ubuntu?
Come on, once and awhile a pure linux article, not about making-ubuntu-look-like-osx / how great ubunutu is / etc comes out. - 4321234, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6The correct way is with a Finnish accent that really doesn't make it possible to exactly tell what you just said:
http://apt.nc.hcc.edu.tw/pub/extra/torvalds-says-l ... - StupotAce, on 09/17/2008, -1/+7Not to mention the fact that there currently is no good way to tell exactly how many people are using linux or windows or Macs for that matter.
You can tell how many people have bought windows or Macs, but it doesn't even mean they use it. And there is no way anyone can know how many times linux has been downloaded.
I'd suggest trying to stick with vague terms like "hardly anybody uses" instead of incorrectly spewing untested 'facts'. - DteK, on 09/17/2008, -1/+6A good video to watch regarding the history of Linux is "Revolution OS". If you are seriously into linux and interested about its roots, this is the video to watch
- WestonP, on 09/17/2008, -0/+5"it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks"
Some of the most revolutionary things were created just as a hobby, primarily for their creator's own use, and then it takes on a life of it's own when others are able to add their own creativity to it. How Linux got started has many parallels with how Apple and others got started, but the fact that it will always remain open, and embrace outside contributions, is what ensures that the fire will keep going strong for a long time. - Dylson, on 09/17/2008, -0/+5NEXT YEAR WILL BE THE YEAR OF LINUX!!
- flechto, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4also at that wonderful age where they can still get busted as a predator by Cris Hanson

"Linux is not powerful im afraid."
It is very powerful, you just aren't aware of it. Market share does not determine power.
"And linux is not getting the press Im afraid. Apple is, because apple is making appealing products."
Linux is getting quite a lot of space in the tech press, while Apple certainly is much larger in the mainstream press.
"Linux is making a very slow, very lumbering entrance into the market, because there is very little appealing about it."
Linux is already in many markets, but maybe not in the markets you are interested in. There are many appealing properties about Linux, but again, likely not properties that you are interested in (like "ooh, it's shiny").
"Linux appeals to the tech users atm, end of. And tech users are the not the majority of the market."
No, but tech users influence the other sectors. Don't be so quick to write the tech sector out of the equation. - tdogg241, on 09/17/2008, -0/+3Well, 100% > 0.8%. See how open-ended you left that? Maybe you should have said ~0.8%.
- CCmachined, on 09/17/2008, -2/+5"LYNNUCKS"...
god, how many n00bs are going to ask that? - CCmachined, on 09/17/2008, -7/+10linux USES gnu. its called GNU/Linux. It's the GNU project with the Linux kernel... that's why GNU adopted it. putting together the GNU kernel was taking too long, and Linus' looked good for what they needed.
- BoneheadFarker, on 09/17/2008, -1/+4When I first saw the word Linux, and heard that the creators name was Linus, I though it was called LINE-NUX because I thought he pronouced his name LINE-NUS. People told me I was wrong, and when I explained my side many people agreed. Until the day I found out he actually pronounces his name LIN-NUS...

- andrewtheart, on 09/18/2008, -0/+2Good thing too. The gratuitous amounts of money we spend on those holidays could go in part to some of the possible victims of disease, dehydration, and malnutrition in Africa - the person dying every 3 seconds in Africa, to be precise.

Plus I have a server setup downstairs, and am about to get a laptop with Linux on it. So that will make three Linux installs for one person. Technically, I'd need THREE Windows licenses for that, wouldn't I? - johndavidjack, on 09/17/2008, -1/+3^^^
Unless I see a red line underneath the word, I don't think twice...
/thanks dig (see EDIT) for making me illiterate...
EDIT: "digg" was replaced to "dig"... - Hermmunster, on 09/17/2008, -0/+2Yes, I run a small business as a systems integrator. In my shop I have maybe 10 units that run Linux and I know those maybe one of those is truly accounted for. That's the beauty of Linux. You can download it and install it many times at no cost. And it works. It works so well. I have many retired people (customers) using it. They have little to no reason to switch back. It does 99% of what 90% of the people that use computers want, for free--let's not forget to mention all the free programs that work well and perform the same tasks as the commercial programs.
Having so many computers running linux in my shop has ever been an inconvenience nor has it hindered my ability to do my job. In fact, as a user of linux I have used Linux to clean systems of viruses, to remove files that I couldn't remove otherwise because of Windows security settings. I've used the partition editors to fix partitions, create partitions, resize them, etc. I don't have to pay for these tools (they work so well). I have used it to clear passwords under Windows, to test the customer's hardware to determine which components are failing and need to be replaced. Linux just helps me get so much done so fast and quite conveniently. Imagine if I had - WestonP, on 09/17/2008, -0/+2Maybe 0.8% for desktop usage, but you obviously have no idea how huge it is behind the scenes... It has been used in nearly every kind of application, from tiny embedded systems to multi-million dollar mainframes. It also runs a large portion of the world's webservers, powers TiVo and other DVR's, etc.
