- badassninja, on 10/15/2008, -0/+26Yeah, and then it took like a day for a update. What a bitch that one day was, let me tell you.
- shethinkmefunny, on 10/15/2008, -0/+19It's more of a space saver. I've got 3 workstations on my (small) desk and with Synergy I can control them all with one keyboard and mouse. You set up Synergy on each computer, and designate one as the server, and the others as clients, and set up which monitor is left/right/above/below which. Then when you move your mouse to the edge of the screen, it switches to the next monitor over seamlessly. This way I can have just one keyboard/mouse taking up space, leaving room for my coffee :D
- themusicalduck, on 10/14/2008, -1/+18"itunes alternative which will do most of what your iTunes would do, not an exact replacement; but does the job better: Amarok, Banshee, Rhythmbox."
Fixed. - JKAL, on 10/15/2008, -3/+17#17 realise why you went to linux and then uninstall XP once again.
- twiztidsinz, on 10/15/2008, -0/+14I'm still holding out for Masturbating Monkey...
- PeachCobbler, on 10/15/2008, -1/+11Interesting list. Pretty unique compared to most ones. Some of this is kind of os-agnostic, but it is still informative.
- presidentjapan, on 10/15/2008, -1/+10When it comes to Linux, I absolutely love LiveCD operating-systems. Apart from a data recovery function, I just like to use PuppyLinux on older computers where XP or Vista are too sluggish, like Celeron desktops with 256MB memory. Uncle Jerry, just buy a new computer already, I'm sick of fixing that slug every month.
- eerpini, on 10/14/2008, -1/+10Thats a nice collection of good Linux tools , ... i like RSIbreak , ......
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/15/2008, -1/+8lars5, the only reason I dugg you is so the guy who replied to you would be heard.
I suggest others do the same. - akiratheoni, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7Why would people disagree with his suggestion of Conky? It's quite wonderful... my desktop is always incomplete without it.
- cheeseplease, on 10/15/2008, -0/+6The quality of an OS is pretty much defined by whether or not GTA is available in a native version.
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -1/+6*You'll spend a hell of a lot of time getting things designed specifically not to work on Linux working
Fixed. - lars5, on 10/15/2008, -4/+9until your next ipod firmware upgrade :-(
- CalcProgrammer1, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5I prefer Songbird for library, it looks better and has plugins. The only thing missing is an EQ, so I usually use VLC for listening to music (has a great EQ, especially the 2-pass feature).
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -1/+5Until you stop buying ipods, which is what I did.
- tk0680, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3So somebody tried Debian, landed at a command line and squealed.
- Culyt, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3Its very usefull if you often have a laptop next to your main system.
Cut and Paste works across it too. - cheeseplease, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3Search the dictionary for the words "better" and "perfect". Are they the same thing?
- thankyousir, on 10/15/2008, -8/+10looking forward to intrepid ibex!
- ExRe, on 10/15/2008, -8/+10An RSS Feed reader from Terminal?
Ya, that'll give me a better Linux experience. - 2of8, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Maybe it would send keyboard/mouse commands over network. I think. Sounds pretty crazy.
- MattBD, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Personally I prefer Gkrellm. I created my own Ubuntu derivative for my Eee PC and used IceWM and Gkrellm. Unfortunately it was unreliable so I went back to the default Xandros. Still, it was worth trying.
- cheeseplease, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Huh? That just doesn't make any sense. Many of them are usable for (and are probably already used by) the majority of users. I'm already using 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 14 (I think anyone dualbooting windows uses NTFS-3g!) and am considering using some of the others as well.
- Culyt, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2I'm also using about 10 of them regularly.
- mrBitch, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I THINK so, you made the list look like this :
#15 install Vista
#16 install XP
I would like to add :
#17 install Ubuntu, or OpenSuse, or Mint, etc. - tackle, on 10/15/2008, -3/+4Software KVM switch?? How the hell would that work?
- Vadi0, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Compiz is all you need.
But, Workrave > RSI. - mynameistux, on 10/15/2008, -1/+2dugg for the picture.
- mrBitch, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1good guess, and that's EXACTLY how a software KVM switch works.
+1 to you, good sir. - oddtom, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1The only gripe I have with conky is that it will often overlap my nautilus desktop despite using settings that should prevent that. But the benefits of using it outweighs that inconvenience. conky + external scripts refreshed on an interval is awesome when you're an administrator.
- jxfallout, on 10/15/2008, -5/+6#15 Install Vista
See what I did there?! - Knet88, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1oh, let the "I hate the x ways to y*" flaming begin.
to all of you who will complain about it, just digg it down and move on, we probably already saw your comment on the last "x ways to y" article.
*y in this case is "to improve your linux desktop" - webcrumb, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't be able to hold out for that lo... ah crap.
- cheeseplease, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Remote computer starting is very cool for anyone. If you need some documents from your home computer for example, you can just boot your pc from anywhere, take the documents and shut it down again.
KVM is very useful for anyone with multi-pc/monitor setup. Many people blog. IE for that rare site that ***** up in FF and a must for webdesigners. I agree with you on the last two though. - lars5, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1its probably too late for anyone to read this but in response:
badassninja and phreaksycle, i have an ipod touch which was fine until the 2.0 firmware. so now i can't sync wirelessly, and that one day has turned into a few months now, so i'm stuck waiting for pwnplayer to come out of beta. and downgrading is not an option. this thing was unstable to the point of being a POS with the 1.1.4 firmware.
rpgmaker, first, it was a gift from my dad and my first ipod. second i'd prefer to have something from creative. hell i didn't even know my dad had the money to buy me one of these. - NuchDog, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1I was prepared for the worst, but that was a nice list.
- diggopolous, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1smfd b about x and y
- Shadoglare, on 10/15/2008, -1/+2Remote computer starting? KVM switches? Blog client software? IE? Terminal window splitters? A terminal-based RSS reader?
Seriously? Who other than the seriously hardcore linux nerds are going to use that crap? - perfectska04, on 10/15/2008, -0/+0If you're using GNOME, you might also want to give Workrave a chance.
- Shadoglare, on 10/15/2008, -6/+6Wow, most of the tips for a "better experience" are things that 99.9999999% of users would never, ever use...
- CrushThemTorg, on 10/15/2008, -1/+1Finally, improved tail ... I am totally nonplussed.
- TheMandibleClaw, on 10/15/2008, -0/+0... I think BitchX also deserves a mention as a great terminal based IRC client
- weizbox, on 10/15/2008, -2/+2This is nothing more than a random list of some tools with VERY short descriptions.. most of which the majority of people will never use (Synergy, RSIBreak, Multitail, etc).
..How did this trash get dugg up this much?
(I love Synergy btw, but it's hardly a 'Linux Experience") - inactive, on 10/15/2008, -1/+1I don't need a large amount of customization to have a unique user experience, I need to get ***** work done!
- Jaymoon, on 10/15/2008, -3/+3http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/images/warp.gif
- cheeseplease, on 10/15/2008, -3/+2How exactly is this related?
- kalagmail, on 10/15/2008, -5/+1Can you play GTA?
- eastsoccer19, on 10/15/2008, -6/+2If Digg could go a day without giving 200 ways to better Linux the world would be a better place. Linux is good we get it but what we really need to better is Windows.
- SiXiam, on 10/15/2008, -8/+2I thought Linux was far better than Micro$oft's best.
How can we improve upon perfection?
