. Torrent manager
. Instant messenger

. Something to FTP some files
. A different game
. A development program that may OR MAY NOT be the best. And I quote "(???)"
THANK YOU DOCTOR TECHNOLOGY NINJA - diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26I would definitely add to that list glipper. It's basically a clipboard daemon that will save multiple copy/paste entries. One thing many new gnome users don't realize is that if you copy text from an app (e.g. firefox) and then close the app, the copy buffer is cleared and you can't paste that text anywhere. Glipper fixes this problem.

It's astonishing how many newbies would have a much easier time with Linux if only they'd install this one little program. I mean, once you get Ubuntu installed and realize that it doesn't come with many of the most commonly used media codecs (like no ***** support for MP3!), you should instantly be made aware that Automatix will take care of all these legality-based annoyances for you in a matter of minutes. And as for the programs on this list, Automatix takes care of most of those too! - MeltedUFO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16DO NOT CLICK ON THOSE LINKS. It's Metacafe, he gets paid every time someone watches his stupid video.
- semvhu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17He has to "duel boot"? So that's what I'm doing with Windows all the time....
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14If you're a gamer, dual boot. It's not worth the trouble. Setting up internet connections is really really easy, especially if you install network-manager-gnome or knetworkmanager.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12not all... and likely very few if any new ones....
But things that are about 1+ year old, it should handle fairly well. - leszek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12you can check here:

This is a good list too:

leszek:"""
@avihappy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_%28software%29#Mono_and_Microsoft.27s_patents
"""
From that wiki entry:
The problematic parts are not the core technologies submitted to the ECMA or the Unix/Gnome-specific parts. The patent concerns primarily relate to technologies developed by Microsoft on top of the .NET Framework, such as ASP.NET, ADO.NET and Windows Forms, i.e. parts composing Mono's Windows compatibility stack. These technologies are today not fully implemented in Mono and not required for developing Mono-applications.
!!!FFS PROGRAMS LIKE GLIPPER DO NOT VIOLATE ANY PATENTS!!!! Nor does Mono in supporting them!!!
C# and .NET are just a languages, standardized and ratified by a committee. They are great languages and a nice addition to the Linux development platform. Problems MAY crop up for mono running Windows based .NET applications, but Linux based .NET programs don't tend to rely on ANY of that. If Microsoft starts bullying Mono, they could TRIVIALLY remove the functionality and programs like Glipper would continue to work flawlessly.
MONO IS NOT ILLEGAL OR BAD. STOP ACTING LIKE A 14 YEAR OLD. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You're right....Windows XP is a cute little "app".
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Automatix tends to break things.
- leszek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@disturbed:
"are multiple users supported like on xp?"
yes
contrary to windows, linux is designed from the bottom to be a multi-user operating system (got that from his unix parent). - brnews, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10OK, this is lame..
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8for all those wanting to switch to ubuntu. i would halve to say wait till april 19th. 7.04 has a one click install for almost all apps you need. their is a package called ubuntu restricted extras which pretty much gets rid of the need for automatix. also if you try listing to an mp3 with out the mp3 lib. it pops up asking if you want to install it. no more beginning users wondering why their music / movies won't play. or you can just get the beta herd 4 is working great for me.
- intangible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Just FYI, glipper has zero mono dependencies.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9He's just giving recommendations of programs for those that don't know, I found many good programs for Windows through the years on lists like this.
Seems you have the problem, for some reason. - ibis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes Gnome has fast user switching.
- Wargalas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Don't know about NFS, but I believe you can play Mafia and CS Source on Ubuntu. Just get Wine.
- crimsonnblue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Will wine play all pc games?
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+5XGL/Compiz and Beryl are better describes as "Eye candy" then a UI. Beryl is a fork of Compiz that, as far as I know (and correct me, someone, if I'm wrong), was specifically for Ubuntu. I, for one, use Beryl, because of its rapid development and splendid features.
- diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"eefoof" sounds like two animals ***** in the wild.
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+5Yes, multiple users are supported as well. The default Login Window requires a user to type in his name, and then his password, but if it's too big of a hassle (can't imagine why, but it's a comfort issue), you can download another "theme" for the login window that is a little similar to Windows's welcome screen.
Check out http://www.gnome-look.org
For GDM (the login window) themes: http://www.gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=150 - schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I prefer gnome, not only does it look nicer and feel more productive, it's also a hell of a lot more stable, and less of a resource hog.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why? The article isn't about a theme, it's about Linux.
GTFO. - grexeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For web dev:
Quanta Plus - http://quanta.kdewebdev.org
BlueFish - http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/index.html - TheSeeker11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I can't see how Azureus is outdated. It's updated quite frequently (betas even more so) and is rich in useful features. Also, unless you're running a pretty old PC, you'll not see Azureus impacting your performance much, if at all.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16I heard that glipper is (or was) still buggy. Also, it's Mono *cough*.
- jboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why switch? Just pick the best tools for the job.
My router is running Linux.
My media center is running Linux.
My desktop is running XP pro. - modestmelody, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Then don't change. Anyone who says Linux is right for everyone is wrong. Linux is right for a lot of people who don't know it yet, however. .Net programming? I don't get the point-- because you chose a career writing Windows apps we should care that you can't switch? As for gaming, it's getting better, but sadly, even Mac doesn't have much gaming support. You happen to be involved wiht the two first things that would make me say that you shouldn't switch to Linux, and that's fine. I bet you'd have a good time playing around with it though and at least learning the system.
You are tied to Windows with those two hobbies/one hobby + job, none of the alternatives would work for you... - RushN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hablo = Prick
- capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5were you under some impression that that was going to work? Or does getting dugg down to hell make you feel all sexy like?
- disturbed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ok good starting info, something to think about
thanks guys - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Sorry if i'm ignorant, but what is wrong with Mono?
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He should have used one of those for his blog. It's ok to have different sized fonts and to make some text bold. Reading his list was painful.
- joemommasfat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4gftp kinda sucks actually. It crashes a lot and hasn't been updated in about 2 years. Unfortunately it has been the only option for a while. I recently started using the new Filezilla for Linux without a problem though.
- redheadguy719, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5no offense, but I agree. The edges of the head are really grainy. I'm interested in the article though.
- MeltedUFO, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I think KDE is ugly. If people who think Windows XP default is childish see KDE, they'll think Windows Xp is manlier than the Brawny Guy.
- longhorn49, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3try madwifi
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just so you know kde and gnome are both Great Gui's it is a matter of taste of which you prefer. so don't bicker about which one is better. Now xfce is crap. ;)
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -2/+5I think EasyUbuntu works better. http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/
- ibis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Older versions of Ubuntu could do WPA with some configuration, current versions should support it out of the box.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I never said people should care that I can't switch :)
My main point is there are still a lot of things that don't work right outta the box. The WPA issue is one. Unless I'm not looking in the right spot, the latest Ubuntu doesn't support WPA from the included Wireless config tools. That's a *huge* thing right there considering a lot of people are wireless!
The games not being supported is a big one, which sorta puts Linux under a "hobby" type of deal. Granted, there are people who don't play games who are pure php coders that can make it their main OS, but *most* people cannot. That's why the widespread adoption of Linux hasn't happened yet.
I've been using Linux for about 8 or 9 years now. Well, not the entire time.. usually re-install it once or twice a year to see what's changed or if anything is there to allow me to switch over. One thing I've noticed is that hardware detection has come along way, but... no WPA support just makes me think, "Damn, if they left THAT out, what else did they forget?"
I'm still hoping mono will work one day so I can experiment with that. - dree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I honestly don't know why you're getting dugg down. gftp does suck.
I end up using my old client through wine... no problems. - Nerevar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The whole KDE consuming more resources than gnome is a myth, there was an article a few months ago that tested the two side-by-side and memory usage was nearly the same.
I don't understand why everyone insists on the KDE vs Gnome war, choice is one of the big benefits of running Linux. Use what you like and quit slinging mud. - leszek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@avihappy:
