- mohtasham, on 08/27/2008, -2/+59Why not just go to gnome-look and pick whatever you like based on rating and popularity?
- willrs, on 08/28/2008, -0/+40linux customization is like crack but more addicting
- perfectska04, on 08/28/2008, -0/+38Other good ones not mentioned:

GNOME/XFCE have tons of good artwork, no need to limit them to only 10. Go to gnome-look or its sister sites and try things out until you find something you like. - frontporsche, on 08/27/2008, -2/+36If we all picked based on popularity, we'd all pick the same thing. :)
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -15/+39dugg for linux
- Vadi0, on 08/27/2008, -1/+17Those are pretty nice.
And I myself stopped going to gnome-look... too hard to filter for the good stuff. Well, I've gotten bored with desktop customization anyway, switched back to default 8.04 theme in the end. - ivantalboys, on 08/28/2008, -0/+13image editing in command line is a bitch.
- hashfail, on 08/28/2008, -2/+14dugg for honesty
- TaintBrush, on 08/28/2008, -2/+13I'm glad they put "really cool" in quotations.

You can check yourself - matthodge, on 08/28/2008, -1/+11What ones are Mac copycat? And don't tell me SnowIsh. Whats more annoying is people like you that claim something that looks white, or brushed metal, is a copy of Mac. They are all original in there own right. Just because Mac uses white and brushed silver doesn't mean they own these colors.
- rollerboy, on 08/28/2008, -0/+9I grow tired of mac comments. I just still don't find mac as a significant OS. Mac is just like: who cares. I came up with this analogy: Windows is the army, Linux is the resistance movement and mac is the civilians, always in the way, just wining never helping.
- Elranzer, on 08/28/2008, -1/+8"These are specifically made for Ubuntu"
I've noticed in Digg articles about Ubuntu, if you replace "Ubuntu" with just "Linux" then the article will still be true. Probably more true, actually. - srg13, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7Whoosh!
I think someone's sarcasm detector is a little off... - ptFoe, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7Crashbit is the best
- jman82s, on 08/28/2008, -2/+8These are very nice, but alas, I'm running Opensuse...too bad I can't use them.
I wish I could use those "Top 10 Apps for Ubuntu" as well. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6I can't access downforeveryoneorjustme.com
Is it down or is it just me? - Qumahlin, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7are you kidding? It's worked for quite some time.
- powatom, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Luckily for us - an icon theme can also change application icons.
- MrTea, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6sucks that windows can't just use the png's
- EagleRock, on 08/28/2008, -4/+9Welcome, fellow Diggers, to Remedial Linux 101.
Now repeat after me: "Ubuntu is not Linux."
Very good. Now, repeat this: "Ubuntu did not create Gnome."
VERY good! Try this: "Gnome, KDE, and 99% of the apps I run now existed before Ubuntu."
Excellent! One more: "I am an Ubuntard for thinking Ubuntu is the center of the Linux universe."
GREAT JOB EVERYONE! Now, tomorrow, we'll go over the intricacies of "cd" and "ls." Class dismissed! - teckieee, on 08/28/2008, -1/+6why don't you quit being just a fan and actually try it your self. yeah it breaks sometimes but so as what ever OS you are using right now.
- infection0, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5Anyone wanna recommend me a window theme? I hate wading through the popular ones.
- picpak, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5They missed Eikon:

Here's a screenshot:
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m128/envyouraud ... - Black6x, on 08/28/2008, -2/+7Actuality, it's circular. Because we pick it, it is popular. Then we continue to pick it, because it is popular.
- Culyt, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5Personally I think its best to find a theme that supports colourisation and go nuts, you can do quite a lot.
The default ClearLooks supports it and if you use Emerald for the window borders you can do heaps with that. Also remember to theme the console.
This is a theme I did a while back using only 2 colours and basic themes (although I wrote a program using Cairo and Python to make the wallpaper):
http://h3g3m0n.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/neolumi ...
Right now I have been thinking about making a really basic GTK widget theme, with no gradients or drop shadows, just basic but stylish outlines for things like buttons that allows for basic colourisation. I would also love to see a basic icon set that allows for recolourisation too, just a sed script would work if its all SVG.
☢ - mantzdapantz, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4you would spend thousands where you could just download an icon set?
- xtothepowerofx, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4i had to read both of those comments twice to see the difference.. time for a coffee break :(
- AzureRise, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Cool, just got done with a fresh install of Ubuntu and installed Flash 9 and Doom 3. Think I'm gonna do some serious customization of Ubuntu this time. You know besides the usual stuff like Wallpapers and System>Preferences>Appearance. Think I might change the icons, startup and shutdown sounds, etc. Anyone have any cool tricks they wanna share?
- dadioflex, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Needless to say these icons can all be quite easily converted to Windows icons by opening the pngs with irfanview, cropping to 32x32 as necessary and then saving as a "ico" file.
- jay019, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3I hope your submitting bug reports so that future generations of linux users dont suffer the same fate as you. It's the responsible thing to do and just as quick as googling for the workaround.
- talonstriker, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3i just really hate people
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3What can Brown do for you?
- MKdx, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3You might want to give [Gnome-Art] a try; you can preview gnome-look themes on your desktop and with one click apply them:
http://vadi-blog.com/2008/07/17/gnome-art-nextgen- ... - embeemb, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I've been alternating between Black White 2 & Black White 2 Gloss, but now definitely will switch to Square Dock..
- matthodge, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3its just you
- Ademan, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Very nice :-) I'd been using clearlooks-wise for a long long time... I always thought crashbit looked awesome, but for some reason after I installed it I never was that happy with it...don't know why... I actually didn't know of Gion, but I'll probably check it out.
I forgive the shameless plug because gnome-colors is so good :-) - powerphail, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Why simply use a command line when you can use a command line AND a GUI?
- bratterscain, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2So why did you ask does it work yet? If you're using it, wouldn't you know? And I don't agree with digging you down because you had a problem with Ubuntu if any fanboys did it.
- Vigacmoe, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2is it just for me? the site is down
- JonnyCasino, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Definitely a nice collection of beautiful icons.
- pak314, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2gnome-colors looks nice. i get tired of the ubuntu brown after a while so might try that out.
- tvanwyk, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2And the airplanes are still buzzing over one very clueless head.
- cyclades, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3I had to read that twice. I thought you wrote *****!
- skyshock1, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I find all these icons to be either quite busy for their size, or using contrasts that just don't work well. Icons should be an overly apparent representation of an object or file so that the user can quickly tell at a split second glance what the icon represents. Cluttered icons with seven layers of gradient, text boxes, obscure-shaped objects, etc... like those depicted in this post do the user no justice and have no place on a clean, clutter-free desktop.
- lonniebiz, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Great work.
- jerrolds, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2http://digg.com/linux_unix/What_Ubuntu_8_10_SHOULD ...
- i found out about "Gnome-Do" search app thingy, which is pretty cool, and more mp3 players (like songbird)
http://digg.com/linux_unix/A_really_sexy_Ubuntu_th ...
- this introduces this "Dust" theme which looks pretty nice - unrealmp3, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Somebody gotta pick up something new in order to evaluate it and increase the rating/popularity.
- watcht, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2You still might want to do the System>Preferences>Appearance window, since it's much easier to just drag your icon/metacity/murrina/ theme .tar.gz packages there where it'll install auto magically, asking you to apply it now to the system as apposed to searching for your /.themes , /.icons, /.whatever folders and copying them manually. But hey, that's just my opinion. Oh one extra tip look into emerald themes for borders if you use compiz, those kick ass rather than the metacity ones. Simple to install too, hop into synaptic or terminal (sudo apt-get install emerald) and download emerald. Than place it into your start up sessions programs, uhm dunno if it's under System> Preferences or Adminstration> Sessions. Put in a new entry called emerald with the the command of emerald --replace. Change and install themes with the emerald theme manager and you are set.
