10 Most Beautiful Looking Linux Desktop.
linuxhaxor.net — Over the years I came across many many linux Desktop screenshots, it ’s amazing how someone can spend huge amount of time tweaking and customizing their desktop look.
- 2264 diggs
- digg it
- possiblyneil, on 05/18/2008, -8/+249I feel disappointed. Most of these are only ok. The one that I wanted to have was a mock up and there was a Mac lookalike in there. Ah well, no doubt it will spawn a reply post.
- iDiggIt42, on 05/18/2008, -3/+44Sorry for the comment abuse, but this server appears to be an ex-parrot, so here's a mirror:
http://209.85.173.104/search?hs=sUq&hl=en&lr=&c2co ...- acdcfanbill, on 05/18/2008, -1/+29Dugg for term, 'ex-parrot' :)
- enterneo, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1hmm?
- limbikity, on 05/18/2008, -8/+1haha agreed.
- gavintlgold, on 05/18/2008, -2/+2http://www.linuxhaxor.net.nyud.net:8080/2008/05/17 ... as well.
- BlackCow, on 05/19/2008, -3/+2I think they all suck. A lot of them are way to cluttered. The only one I liked was this one,
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/7056/screenshot ...
and that one was posted in the comments, not on the list.
- acdcfanbill, on 05/18/2008, -1/+29Dugg for term, 'ex-parrot' :)
- pdbailey, on 05/18/2008, -0/+8The first one looks neat too, but you would need to know how well all those integrated bits are, like the ongoing tasks looks nice (better than a dialog just for downloads and another for...) but then you have to wonder how the "my files" works.
- allyant, on 05/18/2008, -2/+7The first one is a mock up.
- therightclique, on 05/19/2008, -6/+1if you're going to say something like that, you should probably continue by saying "why" you think that.
- zazzalicious, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2because it says so in the article?
- allyant, on 05/18/2008, -2/+7The first one is a mock up.
- rpgmaker, on 05/18/2008, -9/+5The first one was the best looking. Gotta love AWN :)
- gavintlgold, on 05/18/2008, -1/+17That's a mockup :(
- rpgmaker, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2That's not a mockup, try the bzr version of AWN and you'll see.
- gavintlgold, on 05/18/2008, -1/+17That's a mockup :(
- yuanzhoulu, on 05/18/2008, -10/+1if you want an awesome looking linux desktop, install this
http://ubuntustudio.org/
and then enable compiz-fusion. - linux4evr, on 05/19/2008, -22/+17Linux is like a painting. It looks good from far away, but once you get close, you start seeing all the imperfections.
- ubuwalker31, on 05/19/2008, -4/+7Yea, well, your face looks like a painting. A Picasso.
- Archer007, on 05/19/2008, -3/+2Elaborate. The distance one is from the screen usually does not affect kernel code.
- Tenoq, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Your penguin is too short.
- Killerah, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Have you ever been to an art gallery?
- thealec, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0Maybe your paintings are like that... Anyway, on a computer screen, you see these things called "pixels" when getting *too* close. These are in almost every OS, including Windows.
- daizaru, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9I would have liked a little bit of a synopsis of how they were made and so forth. The screenshots on their own is kind of blah.
I am by no means an experienced linux user but know more than most. It would take a lot of work to do things like those and it's a little bit of a tease to people not familiar with Linux and expecting something near that and then getting their first glimpse of gnome.
So yeah I feel a little disappointed too. - WiseElben, on 05/19/2008, -4/+3Sorry, but I can't help but show off my current desktop (~1 mb): http://www.elbenshira.com/images/screenshots/may_0 ...
Ubuntu 8.04 using GNOME with vim and Pidgin running. I'm not on my desktop right now so I can't tell you the GTK and Metacity themes I'm using. I also don't remember where the wallpaper is from, but you can download it from my server here (~4 mb): http://www.elbenshira.com/images/screenshots/boat_ ...- Archer007, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2I take screenshots of my desktop with icons and then set them as wallpaper, leaving the luddites dazed and confused.
- Ademan, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1I'm not really a fan of pixmap based Gtk+ themes (I assume that's one). However I must say, nice text editor :-)
- Tenoq, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Looks like stock - except black. :p
- therightclique, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3not impressive at all. why did you post this? what's the point in showing off your linux installation right out of the box. you should've customized it or something first.
- jenshik, on 05/19/2008, -0/+6My desktop is blank. I figure that I'm not going to be looking at it when I'm using the computer, am I?
- brundlefly76, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3yeah that is the comic part of wallpaper and even more so - Vista's new 'dreamscene' video wallpapers - the whole idea of using a computer is that you are not looking at whats underneath your applications. Its ridiculous.
- mikelieman, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1Isn't "Video Wallpaper" a Television?
- mikelieman, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1Isn't "Video Wallpaper" a Television?

- SweetMercury, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2They were all pretty lame, but I still dug the story for #10. That was the most creative/original I've seen.
- over900000, on 05/19/2008, -3/+3I like how most of them look like OSX.
- thealec, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0Obviously. OSX has borrowed heavily from Linux; and vise-versa. Don't know how or why Windows got into the equation though. UNIX FTW
- iDiggIt42, on 05/18/2008, -3/+44Sorry for the comment abuse, but this server appears to be an ex-parrot, so here's a mirror:
- 0L1VER, on 05/18/2008, -23/+4I prefer this one to all of them: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Another_gorgeous_theme_ ...
- n0odles, on 05/18/2008, -27/+19Last one # 10 is nice, the rest suck.
- SausageSmith, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2110 is nice, if you're a hobbit.
- specialK16, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1Funny because I'm actually watching The Return of the King right now.
- JonnyMark, on 05/18/2008, -1/+910 is nice, if you roll a Night Elf
- scheming, on 05/18/2008, -1/+2more practically, why is gmail separate from mail, and why does it look like a mobile phone?
- init100, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1That one looks like a modern version of Microsoft Bob.
- SausageSmith, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2110 is nice, if you're a hobbit.
- MaxMWood, on 05/18/2008, -3/+110#1 is very nice, shame its only a mock up.
- wedges, on 05/18/2008, -0/+17that one is the only one that interests me. i don't use linux myself, i'm all mac, but that interface looks fantastic for a media center or guest computer. can you actually do that with linux?
- theaceoffire, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2There are lots of Mac interface clones out there... one for every distro I have no doubt.
Here is how to do it in Ubuntu:
http://linuxondesktop.blogspot.com/2007/12/making- ...- wedges, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1#1 isn't the one that looks like OSX.
- Bandersong, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Yes, you can..... sort of. There were a lot of things wrong with that interface, like the whole "my files" and "ongoing processes" that would take a LOT more than just a custom interface. It would be a distro in and of itself.
- t0x2c, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I actually think it would be great for a tablet PC. Have everything in sort of a tabbed viewpoint, slide out a notepad real quick, slide it back into the panel and slide out music or a web page.
- theaceoffire, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2There are lots of Mac interface clones out there... one for every distro I have no doubt.
- 4d669, on 05/18/2008, -3/+1Make your own comments.
- xxMarka, on 05/18/2008, -0/+410 is bloated and weird
- noreality, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4Yea, I tried to do that on Ubuntu, (couldn't figure it out) and I got all bloated and weird.
- t0x2c, on 05/19/2008, -0/+12It's not uncommon for programmers to become bloated and weird.
- noreality, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1Tell that to the girlfriend I don't have....
- noreality, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4Yea, I tried to do that on Ubuntu, (couldn't figure it out) and I got all bloated and weird.
- kcap122, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2also seems silly to be doing 3 hard-drive intensive operations at once (Downloads, CD image burning, and copying).
- t0x2c, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2You must be new here.
- archivist, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3#3 is great. black themes are nice and they're easy on the eyes rather than a white background-window.
- wedges, on 05/18/2008, -0/+17that one is the only one that interests me. i don't use linux myself, i'm all mac, but that interface looks fantastic for a media center or guest computer. can you actually do that with linux?
- schestowitz, on 05/18/2008, -19/+13Isn't KDE 4 prettier than most, by default?
- 0L1VER, on 05/18/2008, -2/+9I'm a GNOME user, but I agree with you there.
- Kingoftherings, on 05/18/2008, -2/+7Actually I still like GNOME better than KDE4, but its definitely better than KDE3.5, maybe I'm just more used to GNOME, and I haven't played with KDE4 a whole lot yet.
- mossblaser, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Don't disapoint yourself, wait untill 4.1 (which even at the moment, the features to be included are just epic - just soo much innovation!). 4 is nice but if you really wan't to use your system 3.5 is the peak desktop environment in terms of functionality.
- jdhore1, on 05/18/2008, -6/+3I disagree...sort of...KDE 4.0 sucks balls...but KDE 4.1 looks promising, though i know it's going to prolly suck. Hell, i use Kopete as my main IM client (i use GNOME) and i thought it sucked so bad i didn't even go over to Kopete 0.50 (which ships with KDE 4.0).
- burjzyntski, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1dugg down for use of the word 'prolly'.
- Lewie, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1Why'd ya digg 'im down? Just because he writes a colloquial word doesn't mean ya gotta be a jerk about it. Sheesh.
- A11YND, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Fluxbox or GTFO.
- burjzyntski, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1dugg down for use of the word 'prolly'.
- neko, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1I dunno. If KDE could stop eliding long file names, I might like it.
- noreality, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1Meh, KDE reminds me too much of Windows, so I only use it on my Modded USB drive to boot from ppls laptops...and then I screw with their system :-D
- thealec, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0My KDE desktop sucks. No file drag or selection... It's almost as if I've got a desktop full of annoying widgets; rather than icons.
- mintblogger, on 05/18/2008, -13/+7First and last one are good, rest sucks.
- geoken, on 05/18/2008, -3/+32Gnome Look > GTK 2.x themes > sort by rating.
That'll give you a list superior to this one.
(note: The same can be done on KDE look) - ileftfark, on 05/18/2008, -2/+190Looks more like a "let's see who can put the most widgets and other unnecessary crap on their desktops" list. #7 is an abomination and an affront to the eyes. #1 looks OK, but again, its only a mockup. #10 looks nice, though, in a "I live with my grandma and love D&D" kinda way (NTTAWWT).
Also, I like how the article is the "10 Most Beautiful Linux Desktops", and then right at the top, the author writes "They are not necessarily the most beautiful, but they are certainly very unconventional." What the *****?

- blackjack75, on 05/18/2008, -1/+105Those are far from being amazingly beautiful and I am certain many users have better desktops than these but, remember how it was in 1998:
http://titaniclinux.net/doclib/content/public/site ...
Note that this is not only one user having very bad taste, all the preinstalled pictures and icons really were *****. I remember the early slackware where after having managed to get X11 to run (no small feat by then) you'd find yourself with a choice of background that included nearly exclusively horribly rendered fractal pictures with colors that even randomness could not have selected.
You can't deny there have been some advances :-)- noreality, on 05/18/2008, -8/+3From really crappy, to mildly crappy?

- noreality, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1Yes, indeed, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Linux, if I could get more ppl (eg those who use this computer) to use Linux, I'd never go back to Windows again, but you would think that the "greener" the software is, the better it would look...they do that with automobiles....
- EdgeOfEpsilon, on 05/18/2008, -0/+7step in the right direction ;)
- bradleyland, on 05/19/2008, -0/+6Bevel, inner glow, all artificial "natural" textures. Standard fare for 1998. Oh how far we have come.

- ShrimpCrackers, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Yeah that is because us Mac guys get what is commonly called the "Grey Screen of Death". Pisses me off considering its on hardware that Apple specified. At least I'm honest about it.

- xxtez, on 05/18/2008, -1/+6I liked #3 a lot, but last time I tried that GTK hack with the OS X-like menubar, it didn't have very good compatibility. It seems it may have improved, so does anyone know where I can find the latest version, and the theme they're using?
I really loved the author's way to just steal these desktop pictures from Flickr with no sources, perhaps some could have provided a little insight on some of these [weird] screenshots... - desuexmachina, on 05/18/2008, -0/+30Something I would love, just once, is for these sites to give an explanation on how to build some of these, maybe just a list of the apps they're using or how to edit the config files, something to actually teach us how to do this for ourselves. So many of these things are just screenshot lists with no real accompanying information.
- FamilyGuy, on 05/18/2008, -4/+2Amen brother. I've tried so many times to use Linux. So many different variations. But none of them are half as fun to use when you can't make them look "l33t" yourself! :)
- Gimpishi, on 05/18/2008, -0/+3Check out Sabayon Linux- it comes with most of the theme managers installled and a buttload of custom themes. Just a do a tiny bit of reading on their forums, and you have it.
- ikkefc3, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Dugg for mentioning Sabayon Linux :D

- Beatmiser, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4Thank you, I was just looking at some of these saying "wow that would be beautiful to have" but gee, I sure have no idea how to get even remotely close! Hell any build info would have been nice.
- VinceNoir, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Not much point... If someone needs an explanation of how to pull off a custom GUI on Linux, then they're not going to be successful. Trust me, I was there back in 1997. The Enlightenment window manager was what got me interested in Linux. I was sick of Microsoft Windows 95 for so many reasons at the point (I won't bother going into it since everyone who knows anything about computers knows that Windows is a ten pounds of ***** in a five pound bag). I was especially turned off by their pathetic mimicry of Mac OS circa 1984.
So that's when I began my journey through Linux. There were two killer apps: Enlightenment and The GIMP. Since I was starting with Redhat 4.5, GIMP was pretty east to access and it didn't take me long to figure it out since I was already an experienced Photoshop user. However, getting Enlightement installed was impossible. I sure didn't want the FVWM95 default desktop that Redhat pushed at the time. It was a pathetic knock-off of Windows 95.
Instead of getting Enlightenment right away, I wound up going with my second choice which was AfterStep (A NeXTSTEP knock-off which was done better than the 95 knock-off). But I stlll longed for the much more modern looking desktops of Enlightenment. And I persevered. After about six months, I finally got Enlightenment running. I was a bit disappointed. The reason is that while the themes made it look cool, the interaction with it was less cool. A variety of oddities wound up making it less usable than I would have hoped.
And in general, that's been my experience every time. Still images are poor way of getting a sense of how good a particular GUI is. You can get an idea of what it might look like, but you will get NO idea what the actual feel of the desktop is.
In recent years, I've tried Enlightenment 0.17. It's very impressive work. Still hard to get installed if you're a n00b. (I no longer am, so it's not that hard for me) And worse is that there's no way to convey the process to getting it installed and running to someone who has zero experience with things like SVN, Git or CVS, or the './configure && make && make intstall' processes.
And likely if someone does make it through all of the needed steps to get it running, it's likely they'll be disappointed. The only possible exception to that these days is Compiz-Fusion. But it's not easy to get running. So tutorials for this stuff would be pointless. Nice idea but pretty much impossible to accomplish.

If you want a nice desktop check out archlinux artwork forum.- Spaceomega, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2I would like that background.

- Aeaus, on 05/18/2008, -15/+49Oh the painful irony that most of these are either Vista or OSX clones.
- mossblaser, on 05/18/2008, -4/+18One is an OSX clone, none are vista clones. (really stop thinking glossy + transparency = vista clone - Linux's been doing transparent glossy since before longhorn).
Then again, all are crap (one looks nice but is very inefficient and also a mock up).- p0tent1al, on 05/18/2008, -6/+2Alright then smart ass, let me rephrase his original statement
"Oh the painful irony that the best desktops here are either Vista or OSX clones"- mossblaser, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Urm, all my points still stand...
- TimeLincoln, on 05/19/2008, -6/+1Because if you bother to buy a good PC Vista is the best OS around, but then again you could just buy vista and expect it to work in your pile of ***** PC from 2000 then complain about it.
- VinceNoir, on 05/19/2008, -1/+6Care to explain why it takes less than a decade for a PC to go from cutting edge to pile of *****? That hasn't been my experience since distancing myself from a crap OS like Windows...
All of my home PCs run Linux (mostly Gentoo). The main application server for the house is from 1997. It's capable of doing all the basic things I need it to do using CURRENT versions of things like Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice and the Gnome desktop. It does a damn good job at multimedia too (encoding and playback).
Now... the NEW work laptop that I have (dual core 64-bit Centrino with 2 gigs of RAM) that I chose to install Windows Vista Pro 64 on, runs like a dog in comparison. Aero Glass is a ***** UI joke compared to the productivity enhancements offered by Compiz-Fusion. Microsoft never does anything right... Nevertheles the laptop is not a "pile of ***** from 2000" but Vista may as well be. Pull your head out of your ass before commenting why don't you? - mossblaser, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1For the record, my spec:
AMD Athlon 64 6000+ X2
4 GB Ram
nVIDIA 7600 256mb
Raptor HDD
Ubuntu 8.04
If vista won't run well on that (it doesn't by my standards) then your argument fails or maybe i've been buying 8yr old hardware...

- Jexie, on 05/19/2008, -3/+6None of those look anything like Vista.
- culbeda, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5Not that I agree with you, but how can anyone find it the least bit surprising when a popular theme IS a Windows or OSX clone, given the millions upon millions of dollars that are thrown into their design and heuristics.
Honestly, I felt that most of the examples in this article suffered greatly due to poor fonts (or font selection) and senseless overcrowding of the desktop. I think we all know what a frickin' console session looks like and I have yet to see one that beautifies the screen it occupies. - nraphael, on 05/19/2008, -1/+0I've got all these on my home vista system.
- aliguana, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1but then again, what desktop can you make that doesn't have at least some Vista/OSX-like features? Let's see. You have icons. You have windows. You have some sort of menu bar. You have widgets. You have a clock.. erm... what can Linux do differently? At least, what can Linux do differently that isn't a total culture shock?
The only Linux distro that is different to Vista/XP/OSX is the one that boots into the shell.- init100, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1"Let's see. You have icons. You have windows. You have some sort of menu bar."
You almost managed to enumerate the components of a WIMP (Window´s, Icons, Menus, Pointer), the basic paradigm that almost all desktop operating systems use.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIMP_(computing)- aliguana, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1exactly. And since all OSs use that method, they are bound to look alike, no getting away from it. So the whole xxx looks like Vista, xxx is ripping off OSX arguement is irrelevant, since they ALL look like each other to a certain extent.

- rieuwa, on 05/18/2008, -3/+11Anyone else affected by "Token appears to be invalid" when digging up/down?
- blackjack75, on 05/18/2008, -1/+5Token appears to be invalid.
- init100, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2I got one when I tried to reply to a post a few days ago.
- imacommi, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2wtf is the deal with this? I get it a lot when sending shouts
- blackjack75, on 05/18/2008, -1/+5Token appears to be invalid.
- evilelf2407, on 05/18/2008, -0/+12I used to be into all those widgets and desktop addons. I used to spend a ton of time going through and customizing the visual styles. After a week or two i would always go back to one of the original themes, and i would end up getting rid of the widgets.
- abhiroop, on 05/18/2008, -0/+5ABSOLOUTELY! These look really cool, and I feel like wow I would love to have these, but at the end of the day...
a) you NEVER see your background (so whats the point of a wallpaper)
b) you rarely see anything else other than a word document, or a browser. I mean you can be coding or whatever, but 99.9% its something along those lines!
So whats the point?
- abhiroop, on 05/18/2008, -0/+5ABSOLOUTELY! These look really cool, and I feel like wow I would love to have these, but at the end of the day...
- guymac, on 05/18/2008, -6/+2I digg the blank slate look... pure white. #ffffff all the way, baby! Tux rules.
- FamilyGuy, on 05/18/2008, -7/+10I think it's so funny how proud everyone is of their "l33t" operating system, and then half the people that use it try their very best to make it look like the ones that they hate with a passion! What the heck is the deal!? Make up your own content! I like the ones that aren't trying to look like Vista/XP/OS X. Especially #8. I think it's because of it's simplicity.
- teabagginz, on 05/18/2008, -1/+5Doesn't do anything for me
- bluntarski, on 05/18/2008, -10/+5My desktop is plain black (low contrast is easier on the eyes), the icons that I need are there and thats it. No flashy menus or unnecessary pictures. It is simple, to the point and highly functional.
"Beautiful" desktops are overrated.
Those that are easily fooled by flashy and pretty, are the ones who buy Macs and Vista, I suppose.- unknownsoldierX, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1I bet you're fun on a date. Being simple and boring doesn't make you "l33t"
- iFrank, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Your non-conformity is making me uncomfortable.
- Totz83, on 05/18/2008, -3/+7They look hideous, the new ubuntu default is the best looking i've seen
- D14BL0, on 05/18/2008, -1/+30#7? Seriously? Come on. I thought we all grew out of that "HACKERS USE GREEN ON BLACK + ROBOTS" a long time ago.
#1 and #8 are the only decent ones, in my opinion.- FamilyGuy, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4Agreed. I really do think that number 7 is pretty freakin' ugly. I never did like the green on black combo. Never understood it.
- culbeda, on 05/19/2008, -0/+6That's because you didn't live through the green / monochrome monitor era. Then again, those of us who did probably don't want to return there, so... point taken.
- fanclerks, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1The robot looks like a twisted version of Gir.
"Burritos!!"
- FamilyGuy, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4Agreed. I really do think that number 7 is pretty freakin' ugly. I never did like the green on black combo. Never understood it.

- n3tfury, on 05/18/2008, -3/+19linuxhaxor.net? rofl.
- smek2, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Makes it easy for you to realize that they don't really got a clue. I never met a real Linux/Unix pro who referred to himself as a "Linux Haxpo". Or used the word "pwned" and pronounced the letter P.

- vanarothiel, on 05/18/2008, -2/+61Buried because Linux can look so much better than these...
- Rekoil, on 05/18/2008, -1/+7Linux can look much better than these. The only ones that caught my eye were #3 and #9, the rest were pretty stupid. I mean, #1 is a mockup, #2 is just an OS X lookalike and #4 is a stock E17 install. Definitely not worthy of the title. Buried.
- eVolutionVI, on 05/19/2008, -6/+0... only in your dreams. In reality though it never looks good.
- omgitsmit, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Well played sir.
