- TheRealToma, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3810 IRC clients for KDE and the CLI.
Xchat and Pidgin? - housetim, on 06/27/2008, -0/+32irc has way better comments then digg. http://bash.org
- ChristmasCpp, on 06/27/2008, -0/+23XChat is the best GUI IRC client I've ever used. Scripts and plugins interface is what makes it so powerful and amazing. Unfortunately, there is no Qt frontend for it yet.
- n0odles, on 06/27/2008, -0/+20Konversation is awesome.
- aimhelix, on 06/27/2008, -3/+20I choose life.
- ramenite, on 06/27/2008, -1/+18XChat lost most of its Linux users when they closed the source, and stopped releasing new Linux versions.
They released a "new" GPL'ed version a couple weeks ago. To quote their website--
"After some complaining and whining from a few people about how long it's taking, we've finally released a new Linux version: 2.8.6, enjoy". I'm sure they didn't need the snide remarks in the announcement. Windows version is a 2.8.7 now, and gets continuous updates. There is always talk among the various distros to just stop packaging xchat because it's almost considered dead.
And if you have a good look at the GPL code, it's intentionally broken to compile yourself in Windows. They have what I could only call intentional errors in the code sandwiched in #IF WIN32 defines, so unless you actually know how to fix these errors, you can't compile it. Most likely this is to stop people from releasing Windows binaries of the GPL'ed code. I did manage to compile 2.8.4, but it was far from easy, mostly hunting down errors in their own code.
They may be complying with the letter of of the GPL, but they don't comply with the spirit of the GPL. - ldog, on 06/27/2008, -1/+12Literally?
Seems like people use that word for exaggeration rather than its actual meaning.
So do you find it easy to create a multi-threaded tabbed interface by telnetting into an IRC server? - Peintros, on 06/27/2008, -2/+12Great list of IRC clients, i was actually looking to try different ones. You should add xchat to the list.
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -2/+11Irssi FTW, XChat should have been on the list too.
- cquilliam, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9Yeah, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. XChat has been around for years and is probably the second-most used of all time behind probably BitchX.
Currently now me, and many of my friends utilize a combination of ssh+screen+irssi for all our irc needs.
If I ever feel the need for a graphical client, its usually Konversation. I used to use XChat a lot, but there was a point when a new version came out that I totally lost interest in it. It coincided with when the authors decided to charge for the Windows version. Not saying that was the reason for it, just coincided with it. - Feanor, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9http://xkcd.com/378/

- hollywoodphony, on 06/27/2008, -4/+12Hey, this is a great list! I'm going to add it to my "Top 10 things I gave a ***** about 8 years ago."

- noolvidaremos, on 06/27/2008, -3/+10Real man use BASH + Netcat
- j.carcinogen, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6Not a KDE fan but I agree. Konversation and Ktorrent are excellent apps.
- cquilliam, on 06/27/2008, -1/+7Well, that was a useless 'stating the obvious' response
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -3/+9more like pretentious nerds
- fredmv, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4'Real men' would never say 'ftw' or intentionally misspell 'the' as 'teh'. Get back to writing your VBScript.
- ssmithy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5stfu. your mom was coded in the 80s.
- jdhore1, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5I almost have to digg you up for that. However, you lose a point because mIRC Scripts don't work well in Wine and the scripts are half of what makes mIRC amazing.
- deathtoartists, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6Yeah, the only clients in that list worth while are irssi and centerim. I use them on a daily basis in tandem with screen. After you figure out how easy it is to perl script irssi you will never use another irc client. ;)
- BOFH2, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5okay here it is spelled out.
You said - Linux is an OS not an IRC client
I said - Yes it is - meaning it is an OS and that you were stating the obvious.
I said - Did I miss... meaning unless I am mistaken no where in any of the posts or article did it indicate that it was an IRC client.
I should have said - No Sh*t Captain Obvious but I did not want to seem mean.
Make sense? - BOFH2, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6Yes it is! Did I miss something in the article or in one of the comments that indicated that it is an IRC client?
- incd, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5Oh, there are other irc-clients than emacs? Sorry about that, had to say. No but really, irssi has everything ever needed.
- RSterkenburg, on 06/27/2008, -4/+910 IRS clientS?
- Hydroxyl, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5Very much so
- zosoIV, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Would it hurt to use proper grammar in your title?

- BOFH2, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5I can't be quite. It is impossible to be just quite.
wow how many times do I have to explain this. Yes, Linux is an OS. We all know that. I never said it wasn't. Are you having trouble today or something? - Ademan, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4honestly in my opinion pidgin is a really ***** irc client (great for most other things though). x-chat is definitely missing though.
- jihadjohnson, on 06/27/2008, -4/+8BitchX FTW, Real Men IRC in Teh SHELL!!!
- Kingoftherings, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5There are IRC clients for Windows, that doesn't make Windows an IRC client.
- paintist, on 06/27/2008, -1/+510 irC clients?
- tackle, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5Opera!
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4ok
- AbstortedMinds, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3irssi ftw
- johnstar, on 06/27/2008, -4/+7guis are for pussys!
- npowel, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Why wouldn't they? What's your alternative?
- diecastbeatdown, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4irssi + screen
KVIrc is nice alternative for GUI - CCmachined, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3dugg for truth xD
- sirhomer, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I grew up on mIRC, but you can't be serious. mIRC's GUI is literarly designed when Windows 3.1 was out. It's quite outdated and nasty looking.
As nerds age it seems we are quickly becoming like those old farts who run the country and who hate change that we all are suppose to hate. - Urigeller, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else.
- geehossiphats, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1hey zephc!
1995 called and they want their AOL setup disks back. - mbm1980, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3I chose heroin...
- Atomic1fire, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2except it cant do IRC
Mibbit (www.mibbit.com) can
But not meebo - pyrates, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Give me one with the gui of mIRC and I'll be happy. Until then, I'll keep using mirc in windows and in wine for linux.
- cquilliam, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3I wish I had my time back for all the mIRC scripting I did back in 1997/98. I created several general purpose scripts as well as a full-fledged warez fserver script set that I spent a lot of time on, got someone to test it for me, who then promptly stole it and released it under a different name. I'm not going to mention what one it was, but it was hugely popular for a while. That essentially drove me away from doing any more scripting.
