- cyberfreak01, on 06/28/2009, -0/+26what no avidemux?
- lemur, on 06/28/2009, -0/+14The most powerful transcoding tool I've used on any system (yes, "transcode," not "inter convert" ;) has to have been mencoder. Unfortunately, learning to use it is too difficult for mere mortals. I managed to hack out some things with it, but I never actually understood what was going on. ;p
- ArthurSucks, on 06/28/2009, -0/+11FFMPEG has evolved quite a bit in the last year. My only complaint is a lack of ivtc.
- warp99, on 06/28/2009, -0/+10Already invoking Godwin?
- warp99, on 06/28/2009, -0/+8FFmpeg has become so advanced that it can now decode DVCPRO HD files. There's no other free implementation available that can decode these files.
- philz, on 06/28/2009, -1/+9So let's try to count the windows based solutions then..
- secrity, on 06/28/2009, -0/+7Probably; they would have to be recompiled.
- Xyc0, on 06/28/2009, -0/+7DOOO EEEET
- Bananaboy8000, on 06/28/2009, -0/+6Will these work for Unix?
- KibibyteBrain, on 06/28/2009, -0/+6Umm, why should I make it if its your idea, why don't you?
- TyrannousDotNet, on 06/28/2009, -1/+6now if only i had linux...
- KloroFormd, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5I have several more complaints. I used the AAC encoder for a codec comparison I made about a week ago and realized the included AAC encoder completely blows compared to other offerings. Ogg Vorbis worked well though.
- popfrogs2, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5Dual boot while you make up your mind.
- bsmang, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4Maybe should pee sitting down?
- killdeer03, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4Ogg ftw.... hehh
- warp99, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4That application would be the command and control software for the AEGIS class missle system:

Windows can only play military games while Linux can play them for real, well at least for the Unites States. - makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+4What's stopping you? It's free! Go for it.
- popfrogs2, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4Yep, mencoder rocks hard, but the only decent gui-ish thing I've seen that uses it well under Windows is AutoGK. Even then it's just a transcoding layer.
Still, I remember watching movies with mplayer using the AAlib plugin, that's some high tech nerdery there. For those of you Linux users, fire up mplayer via the commandline and use the -vo aa switch before the filename. - sx66gns, on 06/28/2009, -2/+5Really nice site , I'm surprised I missed it before , subbed & rss.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3use to achieve the inter conversions on your Linux box.
- bsmang, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4What's so difficult about it? Just read the manual page.
/s - ilikedemoon, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3They also have for windows: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-free-media-conver ...
- MrRtd, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3DeVeDe is by far the most simple, easy way of creating a DVD. There aren't a lot of options but if you for some reason need to throw together a DVD real quick, or just don't want to learn too much about DVD creation, then that's the app to use.
- pedech, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2almost switching to linux...
- warp99, on 06/28/2009, -1/+2If you want a free AAC encoder for Linux you can get one from Nero:
http://www.nero.com/eng/technologies-aac-codec.htm ...
It's suppose to be much better than the included libraries with ffmpeg. The download file includes both the Linux and Windows encoder/decoder. - Frayed_Knot, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Grab a distro. Don't cost nothin'.
- lemur, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1Finding out all the options it has is one thing... actually understanding what they do requires some degree in digital signal processing.
- x713, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Honestly the best and easiest way to throw together a dvd. I have been using it for 2 years and it just keeps getting better and faster.
- bsmang, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1Yes, I know, that's why I put the "/s" below my comment. ;-)
- KloroFormd, on 06/28/2009, -1/+1That's what I used for the comparison in the end.
And yes, it's WAAAAY better than the one that comes with FFMPEG (FAAC). 32kbps AAC sounded pretty fantastic with the Nero codec, 64kbps sounded horrible with FAAC. - pokobunt, on 06/28/2009, -0/+0Midori web browser is only available on Linux.
F Virtual Window Manager is only available on Linux.
Exaile is only available on Linux.
I could go all day. - SpazAttack5000, on 06/28/2009, -7/+4Can ya digg it? OHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHH!!!!!
- bwonder, on 06/28/2009, -6/+1Awesome?
- B4IFuRu18, on 06/28/2009, -7/+1Not really ALL that great.
- Mothlem, on 06/28/2009, -7/+0How bout just 1 or 2 good ones??
None you couldn't even find a single one - Mothlem, on 06/28/2009, -8/+0i would say audio and video converting applications on linux is the worst applications you could ever Imagine between all linux applications
- peestandingup, on 06/28/2009, -12/+2How bout just 1 or 2 good ones?? Seeing that Linux makes up like 1% of computer users, why do you guys all insist on the "more is better" motto??
Seriously guys, stop recommending 12 different programs that do the same thing & a ***** load of distros to ordinary Joes. All you're doing is confusing the hell outta people. More is not always better.
Oh, and I look forward to being buried by you Linux Nazis for just telling the truth. - inactive, on 06/28/2009, -17/+1How about this. Instead of 99999999 to the 99999999999th power of apps/devices/etc. Just make 1 good one.
Currently there isn't a app that only runs on linux that is good enough to compete with the best windows apps.

What is Digg?
