- nerdherder, on 08/26/2008, -6/+65Whats with all the unrelated thumbnails the last couple months?
- pHr34kY, on 08/27/2008, -4/+41On #10, you're referring to running a shell from a GUI. He's referring to the ability to run a shell WITHOUT loading anything graphical (such as XOrg or XFree86).
It also means that you can do a LOT more without it over a network. This morning I got a call from the wife about file permission issues on the server. I managed to fix it over SSH using my mobile phone while I was on a train - try doing THAT with windows. - LMN8R, on 08/27/2008, -10/+42"10 sets of rambling, disjointed thoughts full of fallacies and assumptions on both sides"
buried - ptFoe, on 08/27/2008, -6/+37No mention of spyware or viruses, whatever the reason for it the lack of spyware and viruses in Linux is a significant difference.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -14/+43"...even though Linux has reached well beyond its school-project roots, Linux users tend to be soapbox-dwelling fanatics who are quick to spout off about why you should be choosing Linux over Windows."
Truthiest part of the article right there. - smotpoker, on 08/27/2008, -2/+30Decent article, though the reference to Synaptic as the package manager kinda irked me... It's "apt", duh! Synaptic is just a frontend
- wallclimber, on 08/27/2008, -3/+29I think the part that made me uneasy was her odd willingness to accept the "soapbox-dwelling fanatics" and "fanboy fanaticism" labels as applicable.
I don't know any fanatics. I'm not a fanatic, I AM, however, past the point of willingness to put up with crappy software. I resent the fact that whenever us lowly computer users speak up for ourselves we're belittled and called names.
All I want is good clean, reliable software that is reasonably secure, for a fair license. I want to own my computers, hardware, software & personal files. I don't want to merely rent the software, and I DON'T want DRM.
Above all, I want Microsoft to just back off and get the heck out of the way so those that CAN produce high-quality software have a little room to do so.
"Fanatic" my granny butt, I'm no fanatic, I'm just peeved. Hmmph...(okay, maybe I do have a soapbox, but it's just a little one :) - Nimda11, on 08/27/2008, -7/+27I think this one gets the award for 50,000th ***** worthless completely unoriginal, misinformed Linux vs. Windows article I've seen on the internet.
Its just like winning the 1 Millionth customer award except rather than get a $5,000 shopping spree, you just get punched in the face. - Doubs, on 08/27/2008, -4/+22First paragraph: "This is not, in the least, to say one is better than the other."
Last paragraph: "Well I think my reputation (and opinion) precedes me, so I probably don’t need to say I feel strongly that the advantage leans toward Linux."
What I was hoping would be an objective article turned out to be anything but, dugg down. - DuneChild, on 08/27/2008, -1/+19The point is that when something goes wrong with X, you can simply boot to a lower runlevel and still have all the necessary tools to fix the problem. When something goes wrong with Windows, booting to a command prompt does not give you the same tools you would normally have in Windows, and often the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option will get stuck in the same place. These situations usually require another computer, or a good PE boot CD to correct the problem.
- youannoyme, on 08/27/2008, -2/+17uh...no...just the opposite...
"There are just as many help sites/lists/forums for Windows as there are for Linux" - schestowitz, on 08/26/2008, -2/+17It has gone on for longer than that.
- angers, on 08/27/2008, -1/+15it's a trick to bypass adblock...
- BlackAdderIII, on 08/27/2008, -0/+14I suppose "renting" could apply to paying money to license software that you're not supposed to modify or examine.
It comes with an agreement that it isn't yours to do what you wish, with. If you had a $( car, house, TV, CD whatever other cliche ) this would probably amount to a rental agreement or lease, so it's understandable that it would seem like "rental" to somebody.
To be fair, if you have ever had to phone up Microsoft because you changed a machine's hardware, you should know the feeling that "renting software" refers to. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 08/27/2008, -1/+15I only find those people on the internet, and the Windows/Mac fans who argue with them are undeniably JUST as bad.
Seriously, all of the fellow Linux users I know even brought it up in casual talk about computers unless the subject of OS choice was specifically talked about, and then it barely went as far as saying they use it.
Hell, their good nature and willingness to answer my questions was what got me interested in Linux in the first place.
The "soapbox-dwelling fanatics" are the minority in almost every group, and as such do not represent the whole or even the norm. - guyperson, on 08/27/2008, -3/+16One is called Linux and the other is called Windows.
- mynameistux, on 08/27/2008, -0/+12and what a good frontend it is.
- BlackAdderIII, on 08/27/2008, -2/+14"""The few times I ever got infected it was due to my own curiosity. I clicked on something I knew was most likely a virus but I just had to know. You will face this with any OS you use."""
No, *you* will face this whatever OS you use - it's that little security problem called the user. - klitzbtc, on 08/27/2008, -14/+25#10, http://www.linux.com/articles/114107
You obviously have no clue what you're talking about, so learn first, then bitch. - arjie, on 08/27/2008, -2/+12What the... You got buried for quoting the article, and it wasn't out of context either. That's retarded. Dugg to even things out. Why would anyone bury you for providing information? Makes no sense.
- antoniuk, on 08/27/2008, -4/+14Inaccurate and one sided. Smart computer geeks use both and don't care.
- fuse13, on 08/27/2008, -13/+23@klibtzbtc. LOL. Thanks for reinforcing the stereotype of Linux people as aggressive nerds. "you are dumb, bitch! heres a technical article!" Oh man.
- BlackAdderIII, on 08/27/2008, -2/+12My girlfriend uses it, because she's cool.
Honestly... as long as your girlfriend fails the "Linux Test"... - carl25, on 08/27/2008, -30/+39#3. Um no, windows has no online support ? Have you heard of anything called the internet or website ? perhaps a microsoft website or a lot of other sites
#7. Again no, uxtheme.dll is free, stardock might cost money. But the basic stuff is mostly free
#8. I'm not even going to touch this one.
#9. "Things have now evolved to the point where Linux subsystems are set up so that you can use a removable device in the same way you use them in Windows." So what's the fundamental difference ?
#10. Lucky to get command line via same mode ? are you insane ? in vista this is what i use to get into cmd mode. Click start button, type in cmd and enter voila, i'm in cmd. Windows might not have different kinds of security levels, but they have different account types for a reason - arjie, on 08/27/2008, -0/+9Don't be afraid of that. The Ubuntu Forums (and I suspect other distro's forums too, but I use the Ubuntu Forums) are very helpful. It's against the forum rules to tell people off and everyone's really eager to help, so all questions from, "Where is the calculator?" to "How do I restore my hard disk drive partition which I damaged by playing around with the table?" will be answered. Seriously.
- Acglaphotis, on 08/27/2008, -0/+8It's because of how the user system and package-management [besides built-in security] are implemented.
- MWeather, on 08/27/2008, -1/+9"I'm far from a windows fan, but what software is it in windows that you are "renting"?"
Well for starters, there's the Operating System. Not much use without the activation servers. - neodude237, on 08/27/2008, -1/+9@ 5, Start, all programs, accessories, command prompt.
- klitzbtc, on 08/27/2008, -3/+11well I wasn't calling him dumb, or a bitch. but thanks for annihilating my screenname.
- mynameistux, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7FAIL
- MWeather, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7Linux has no licensing feed, only distribution fees. I can pay for RHEL, and then distribute copies for free.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -3/+10remember, people on digg don't actually read the articles, they just like to be opinionated. clearly dcollins has a FAIL at reading...
- MWeather, on 08/27/2008, -1/+8It's not unrelated. It's just one of the differences between Windows and Linux. I don't need a spyware blocker.
- fani, on 08/27/2008, -2/+9Eh... I don't give a *****. I'll continue to use whatever I want to get the job done.
I use Windows and Linux and Mac OSX btw. I don't really give a ***** what the OS is at the moment as long as whatever I wish to do is done ( eg. gaming on Windows etc. ) - MrGiblets, on 08/27/2008, -2/+9Digg need a better thumbnail sniffer.
- infiniphunk, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7Marxist, lol.
McFail 2008 - MWeather, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7"If enough people, let's say 10^6 people, cared to invest time in hacking your web server, I doubt you'd feel so secure."
Now with 10^6 people examining the source for exploits. Especially if they've been doing so for 13 years. - TPorter72, on 08/27/2008, -1/+7http://ubuntuguide.org anyone can follow it.
- smotpoker, on 08/27/2008, -1/+7I think it is suggesting such forums and documentation are generally way more lacking in comparison. It's been years since I've used windows but I know that was the case when I did use it, and one of the biggest reasons why I migrated to Linux. Surfing for info required sifting through tons of spam-sites and clone products and 99% of the people I found to ask about problems or ideas only had a very superficial understanding of how anything worked.
- buckrogers1965, on 08/27/2008, -3/+9Funny, my friend just installed Vista and was smacked down with 6 viruses in less than 2 days.
- amoeba, on 08/27/2008, -0/+6it's a hard thing to program...
/been there - inactive, on 08/27/2008, -7/+13Norman619: "Actually as long as you are running a good anti-virus and firewall you are pretty safe."
Actually, no. There is simply NO WAY to make Windows at all "secure" apart from disconnecting it from the 'net. This applies to ALL versions of Windows.
Norman619: "If/When Linux becomes mainstream it will suffer from the same problems Windows does once the malware/virus coders focus on it and they are froced to patch it as often was MS does."
Again, no. As long as a Linux user has set a reasonably secure root password, there is NO WAY to gain unrestricted access to his machine. This is entirely contrary to Windows, where unauthorised access is trivial. Irrespective of market share, this won't change. It's fundamental to the structure of each OS.
Norman619: "No OS is bullet proof".
Feel free to try to gain unauthorised to my web servers or any of the other machines I maintain. You simply won't be able to do it. Linux is entirely "bullet proof" if correctly configured. Windows, on the other hand, is entirely open to abuse. - Matri, on 08/27/2008, -3/+9Vista-compatible viruses are slow in coming. :p
- wigren, on 08/27/2008, -1/+7Says the virgin.
- LeviTheSmith, on 08/27/2008, -2/+8People like different things.
- jakeshdaddy, on 08/27/2008, -4/+9My copy of Vista slowed down considerably in protest!
- infiniphunk, on 08/27/2008, -3/+8because you give a toss what your girlfriend thinks of the OS you us??? wow
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -1/+6you are by far the dumbest person i've ever come across on digg, your parents must be proud
- JonForTheWin, on 08/27/2008, -2/+7"lack of"? Try impossible.
With grsecurity (excellent on an NX server when you have hundreds of users).. any binaries not owned by root can't be executed. - kinseyincanada, on 08/27/2008, -3/+8but not a single one of these reasons apply to the average user.
